Super cute and fun picture book by Karen Krossing! This should be a first purchase for most libraries!

I absolutely loved this book. My daughter has very extreme moods and this was just the kind of book that helps her as well as me as a parent learn to empathize with her and come along in a caring loving way. Beautiful book and a beautiful message.

Sour Cakes is about two siblings, one of which is having a grumpy day. The older sister tries to cheer the little sister up, however the little sister is still in a bad mood. I was not a huge fan of the art, but I like the message that it is okay to not be okay. In particular, the language the little sister uses to communicate and express her mood is very strong and powerful. This would be a good story for a younger child who struggles with "bad days" and expressing themselves, as well as a good example to older siblings on how to validate and support someone through those feelings.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.

This was a good book that shows kids that everyone has an off day and it is okay to acknowledge those feelings. The illustrations were fun and did a great job of highlighting the text.

While I loved the illustrations and the incredible imagery, the story felt very flat for me. The message seemed to be unclear. Nevertheless, it was still a fairly enjoyable read.

Sour Cakes revolves around two siblings who wake up in very different moods, one so excited and happy, and one cranky and down. Sour Cakes would be a fantastic read aloud in a classroom to showcase that it's okay to be in a bad mood and that having someone to sit with you instead of creating toxic positivity is important.

I really love stories like this, which validate the different feelings that children can have -- including being cranky and grumpy and sour. I love that the big sister never tells the younger one to "cheer up" or "smile" or "it'll be okay" but just totally runs with her crankiness and lets her be herself. I love that they talk about how she wants to kick things and physically express her feelings. I think many toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners will all be able to relate to the feelings in this story.

Was confused as to what the author was aiming at with this story. I though perhaps it was a way to help a young child who is depressed or just out of sorts. It could also be a story of how a sibling or a friend an help when someone feels out of sorts. Simple stories are best for kids and it’s difficult to fully come across as helpful when dealing with a tough subject. The illustrations are well done since they convey the message with broad strokes what is going on between the children.

Two sisters have distinctly different moods when they wake to a new day. One is joy filled and excited to play and have fun together. The other, not so much. Her mood is cranky and she deliberately wants to do the opposite of each activity the older sibling suggests. It's when the sister actually listens and offers to join her sibling that the story's mood changes. Krossing models empathy and reaching out for younger readers. They will see themselves somewhere in this story and get an understanding of how other feel as well. The illustrations enhance the text and tell much of the story for readers.

A girl meets her younger sister’s contrary attitude with cheerfulness, suggesting a variety of activities to do together, but it’s met with a determined grumpiness. So she switches gears and asks to join her sister in her gray, foggy mood. This breaks through the negativity and the two girls unite to dance and stomp until the fog fades away. Colorful illustrations on simple backgrounds devoid of details allows this to be anywhere/everywhere, and keeps the focus on the children’s emotions. This would be a good conversation starter for families dealing with a child who is often out of sorts, providing a safe place to discuss feelings and express empathy, meeting the child where he/she is at the moment.

I liked this one, it was really cute! It's a good way to look at how children's moods are allowed to change throughout the day and that others are always willing and ready to help you deal with those moods.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

A sweet picture book about empathy and understanding that your mood and others' moods aren't alwats going to mesh but we can still find ways to love one another.

I can't wait to read this at circle time! There is so much toxic positivity, especially in children's literature. It is absolutely OK to feel sour and there is nothing better than a friend who is willing to embrace our sour without trying to change or condemn it.

This is such a great story to start a conversation about how to communicate emotions and needs honestly and how to meet someone where they are and acknowledge their feelings.

The illustrations are vivid and engaging and complement the story well.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This is a beautiful book and I would definitely read this to a class. The story of the big sister trying to get her little sister out of a funk is so relatable to children. They can also identify with feeling in a great mood themselves (I think we all can!) Lots of talking points in this book to drive conversation about family relationships. I loved the illustrations that really portrayed the energy of the older sister. A great read. Thank you for letting me read this advanced copy.
