This story of a shooting in a small bar, in a relatively small town, killing five and injuring two, far exceeded my expectations. Told primarily in the voice of three women who are connected - a surviving bartender, wife of a man who is shot and in a coma, and the mother of the shooter - is an approach that gives you access to their innermost thoughts, which gave a more realistic feeling approach to the story.

I am especially grateful to have received the audio version., making it so much easier to keep track of the narrative. My reading style tends to skim over chapter headings, so getting a voice change was I essential. It didn’t hurt that one of my favorite narrators, Hillary Huber, was one of the readers. Each reader gave an excellent interpretation of her character.

Timely, well-written, fast moving - an excellent read all around.

No Hiding in Boise by Kim Hooper follows Angie, Tessa, and Joyce, three women who are all entwined and affected in different ways by a deadly bar shooting. Angie is dealing with her husband being left comatose after the fetal shooting. Tessa is a twenty-three-year-old bartender who escapes to a backroom storage closet during the shooting. When it comes to light that five people were killed, she is burdened with the question of why she survived. Finally, Joyce is reeling by the horrible discovery that she is the mother of the shooter.

I really enjoyed this under the radar book. I liked reading from each of the character's perspectives including the victims of the shooting. I liked how this book focuses on the aftermath of the shooting instead of the shooter. While the mother of the shooter coming to terms with understanding how her son could do something so egregious, the book doesn't try to excuse any of the shooter's actions instead focusing on the victims.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Told from the perspective of three women, this riveting story tells the aftermath of a bar shooting in Boise, Idaho. The shooter's mother, a bartender who survived, and the wife of a shooting victim who's husband is in a coma all wonder- what really happened? This book explores shock and grief and faith in others and interweaves these women's stories so well. I listened to this on audio and I'm glad I did- it really helped keep the voices of these women separate in my mind. This made me really think about the loved ones of not just victims but also perpetrators. This is not a particularly easy book, but it is really well done and very good. Five stars for a good drama!
The audio version was great and really kept me going. The narrators were so sharp and full of empathy and emotion without straying into cheesy territory.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advance audio copy for review.

I enjoyed the storyline of this book, quite a bit. I have a morbid fascination with mass shootings, and this book was really good! I listened to it on audiobook, however, and did not like the narration AT ALL. I found that the different voices for the different characters took away from my enjoyment of the story.

Violence can happen anywhere, and this book about a relatively small "mass" shooting in a neighborhood bar in a small city manages to address the repercussions of sudden and unexpected tragedies. The multicast audio performance spends small bits of time with a number of the people involved: the mother of the shooter, the wife of a desperately injured man--a widow who isn't a widow, but still bereft--the bartender who escapes injury because a customer who warns her to hide, the victims, and the friends and family members of the victims. It's an exploration of grief, of coping, of the guilt of survivors. This is definitely one of the best books of the year.

I actually listened to this one on audio and really enjoyed the narration. The story follows three different women who are connected through a shooting at a local bar. Tessa is a bartender who escapes to the back room during the shooting, Angie wakes up in the morning to hear that her husband was shot, and Joyce discovers her son was the shooter. The book explores the aftermath of the shooting and the relationships between the people involved. Why was Angie's husband at the bar? What led to the tragic shooting?

I enjoyed listening to this book and the mysteries tying each character together were intriguing. Definitely worth a read/listen!

What you can read about in newspapers (almost) every day, is that there was a shooting somewhere, leaving people dead and injured. What you do not get to read about, is what happens to those families afterwards. In #nohidinginboise, @kimhooperwrites follows the victims of a shooting at Ray’s Bar in Boise, Idaho. There’s Joyce, the shooter’s mom, and Tessa, a young bartender, and Angie, whose husband is seriously injured.

The story and the characters and everything about this book is fantastic. I listened to the #audiobook which was ALSO fantastic, and included a huge cast: @devonsorvaribrand @stephanie_willing_says @hillaryoutloud @steph_einstein @madeleinemaby @machinegundelli @brusaquatch @yesthatadambarr #petecross #nellhellegers #patricklawlor

Emotional, heartfelt, full of sorrow, dread, and yet hope.
No Hiding In Boise by Kim Hooper
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Layers upon layers of emotions swept this storyline as it is told from each character’s perspective.
This is one of those books that you read and as you turn the last page you can’t help and smile because you truly enjoyed the story. But as the hours and days go by after you’ve finished, you sit and ponder the depth and complexity of the emotions as it’s all too real and raw.
Kim Hooper outdid herself as she addressed mass murder shootings that we as a society get enraged over, but do not do enough to truly stop the cycle whether fueled by hate, depression, or caused by the complexity of mental health.
This is a read we can all relate to in someway or another, I cannot help but be left with such a peace with the ending, in the way Kim Cooper wrote the how grace in the relationship between Tessa and Joyce. That among tragedy, there can be such beauty. Makes me wonder if at the heart of it all, forgiveness and relationships are more important than anything else.

A shooter walks into a bar in Boise, kills five people, injures another two, and then turns the gun on himself. Why it happened is what everyone is trying to figure out, but it’s the stories of three women connected to the shooting that makes this such an incredible book.
This expertly crafted story was raw and heart wrenching. It’s no secret that I love family drama and books featuring strong women, and this absolutely delivered on all fronts. The writing felt so genuine and empathic towards all of the characters. It’s so much more powerful than one would assume from the synopsis, it’s tragic and healing, and I can’t recommend this book enough.

Thanks to @dreamscape_media and @netgalley I listened to this, and will a full cast of narrators, it was incredible.

So so good. I do often wonder after mass tragedy what are the long term ripple effects and I think this book provides some insight into how people and communities are effected and go on. I thought all the characters were well drawn out and relatable in some way, even the ones that maybe you feel you shouldn’t empathize with. It is definitely is worth a read and I would recommend.

This is my absolute favorite book this year! This book is about the lives of multiple people related to a mass shooting. The shooting occurs late at night in a bar in Boise Idaho. We get to hear from multiple victims perspectives but the main characters are three woman brought together because of the shooting. Angie, the wife of a man who slipped out in the middle of the night and was shot in the shooting. He is in a coma and she is searching for answers.
Tessa, bartender at the bar the night of the shooting but managed to escape by hiding. Then there is Joyce, mother of the shooter who also killed himself at the bar. All three woman are in search of answers.
This story is so captivating. So many questions, so much loss and grief. Through connections, bonds are created and hope begins to peek into their lives.
This book does not sensationalize mass shootings but it shows the reality of those affected by such a tragic event. I find myself still thinking about the characters well after I finished this book!
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this amazing book for my honest opinion.

I LOVE when audiobooks give each character their own voice. I haven't listened to one like it since Daisy Jones and The Six, and in a similar fashion to that book, I was swept into the plot so much more deeply than I am with one author. Dive in and take a look at one story through the eyes of everyone involved and see whose side you end up on! Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for a copy of this audiobook for an honest review.

Thank you Netgalley for this audiobook edition of No Hiding in Boise by Kim Hooper.

First of all, the narration is fabulous. It has multiple voices representing the various characters, and I LOVE that, it gives the book so much more shape. Well done producers and actors.

This is the kind of of story that I just love. It reminds me a lot of a Liane Moriarty. Something happens that causes for a TON of speculation. But peel every layer back one by one, and you find a story nothing like what you were expecting. I loved going back to my home state Idaho, even though I'm not from Boise, I do love Boise. I thought the characters and their backstories were fleshed out very well. This is a good ride, well worth hunkering down to, with a nice cup of tea, and maybe a bowl of popcorn.

Thanks #netgallery. I loved this book. Loved the different perspectives from the main event. Liked how the author developed the story and emotions from everyone. Great book.

This is the story of a mass shooting in a bar in Boise, Idaho, the repercussions and the consequences that follow, and the people affected by it, as well as the connections made after.

The morning after the shooting, Angie, whose husband, Cale, was there and shot, wakes up when the phone rings to the news of him being shot, and is hospitalized. He is in a coma. Angie questions this at first, believing her husband is still in bed beside her, until she realizes he is not there. And then wondering, questioning what he was doing at the bar at all. It seems so unlike him.

On the same morning, Joyce also receives a phone call letting her know that her son Jed is suspected of being the shooter, but he is also dead.

Tessa, a twenty-three year old bartender at the bar, keeps replaying the moments as they unfurled up to the shooting, and the man at the bar who had told her to hide.

Afterward Tessa ends up making contact with Joyce, and a friendship of sorts ensues. Both seek answers while trying to carefully navigate the connection that others might question.

Love and loss, compassion against a background of public opinion. What some people think despite the lack of any facts. This is - in part - a view of some facets of public opinion and how insanely inaccurate ‘facts’ create a forum claiming to believe, or perhaps worse actually believing, the craziest concocted stories and claiming them as though they are ‘facts.’

Meanwhile, Angie tries to come to terms with the fact that her husband had left their home after she’d fallen asleep to go to a bar. Since he’s still unresponsive, she can’t question him, demanding answers. She can only revisit the questions she poses over and over to herself. She also sees the questions unasked in the eyes of those questioning why her husband went to the bar without her. She questions it herself, silently wondering if he was having an affair.

This is a story of a tragedy, but at its heart it is also a story of so much more than that. There’s so much honest, realistic emotion as they try to make sense of this tragedy, try to figure out their lives in the aftermath. The bonds, connections, created in the aftermath, the secrets and pain revealed, and a new hope for the future navigating their lives after so much loss.

I listened to the audiobook which is wonderfully narrated by a cast of eleven people - Devon Sorvari, Stephanie Willing, Hillary Huber, Stephanie Einstein, Madeleine Maby, Nick Mondelli, Michael Brusasco, Patrick Lawlor, Adam Barr, Pete Cross, and Neil Hellegers - which really added to the story for me as it allowed for hearing a different voice for each character.

No Hiding in Boise is told in the aftermath of a horrific shooting. The author provides deep analysis into several points of view, all centering on the shooting. The author created a story that is often horrifying but also highlight adaptive aspects of human nature. Mental health awareness is a clear theme. I don’t think this book is for everyone due to it’s violent central event, but it is well done.

Kept me listening and felt there were some interesting layers and twists to this book. Enjoyed the narrator and the storyline and I found the characters were well-described and believable.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this title and most of it was sad but it was told through different voices and perspectives and not until the end did you hear the voice of the man who actually
Committed violence. It was intense

QOTD: what’s your sun care routine? The whole family has been using this Blue Lizard Elmo SPF 50 this week 😂 long gone are the days when I’d later myself in baby oil to bake on the beach or tan in a booth 🙅‍♀️ now it’s all about high SPF, hats and umbrellas ☂ ☀️

I finished up the audiobook of No Hiding in Boise by @kimhooperwrites this week, and it was one of the more engaging ones I’ve picked off of @netgalley lately. I loved the narration, but more than that, it was a really compelling fictional story about the, “collateral damage,” of mass shootings (so to speak).

I added the synopsis on the swipe if you’re interested. It’s a definite recommended read 👍

Great audio production, the multiple narrators was exactly what was needed for this book. I was a little put off at first when the narrators were pronouncing Boise as Boy-see instead of Boy-zee. I looked this up and found that natives pronounce it Boy-see while outsiders such as myself say Boy-zee - kudos to the narrators/production team for getting this right. I think it is tough to get it all right when writing about a mass shooting (which is sadly far to commonplace in the US) and I thought the author did a good job developing the characters and feelings in this story. I think this will be a popular book club choice.
