This was a good listen. Narrator was really good I thought. I thought the story was fine, but my son seemed to like it quite a bit.

The nephews choose this one for a car ride. They opinion is that the movies are better. This was too much build up for their minds. Now this story was written for adults and not kids/teens, but we had high hopes. I think they will like this better with a bit of age and life experience. For no it was just too much. DNFed at 10%

I love Spider-Man and books based on the comics, but since this was a video game tie-in, I felt like I was missing a deeper connection with the story. The narrator's voice and storytelling style was intriguing and helped to keep listening to the audiobook. However, I DNF'd this in about 40%.

I love spider man so I had so much fun with this audiobook. From a huge marvel fan, I thought this book was very well done and I definitely would recommend the audiobook on this one!

If you love Spider-Man and have played the most recent PS4 exclusive video game, then you NEED to read this book. I got to listen to it through Netgalley and I'm so glad I chose to do an audiobook over reading the actual book because Pete Cross is THE BEST narrator. His Peter Parker voice is perfect! He also did an excellent job transitioning his voice from character to character.

This book gave you a better grasp on the set up of the video game and now I feel like I need to go replay the game!

Let me just say I am not remotely familiar with the action video game that this book is the prequel for, so my review only has the context of this story itself.

I would like to thank @dreamscape_media for sending me this wonderful audiobook via @netgalley. This book was narrated by Pete Cross. His voice was absolutely captivating and the narration was spectacular. The voices and intonations for the different characters really made the story come alive and the pacing was perfect.

Hostile Takeover is not the usual Spiderman origin story. It starts off some time after Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and became your friendly neighborhood Spiderman. This book and the characters we already know and love is a treat for anyone familiar with the Earth-616 timeline stories. We primarily follow Peter and MJ. Norman Osborn and J. Jonah Jameson also get involved, but they play much smaller roles than we've seen before. Familiar villains also make appearances and they wreck their usual havoc on New York City, mainly Wilson Fisk the Kingpin, Shocker, and Electro. Other interesting characters are also introduced. Maya Lopez aka Echo who is not commonly featured with our favorite arachnid. Michael Bingham aka Blood Spider who here has a slightly different origin story. Also Captain Yuri Watanabe, who is part of the NYPD force, which is the precedent to her better known Wraith persona.

Overall, Hostile Takeover does a fantastic job of keeping the aspects of the characters and their personalities that make them iconic and timeless, while still providing enough differences to keep the reader engaged and the story interesting. I loved that there is also enough suspense that made me not want to pause this audiobook. Even though you can clearly see Spidey’s double life is heading downhill, you can’t help but wanting to see exactly how he will get himself untangled from this web, pun absolutely intended!

With great power comes great responsibility, and while it had monumental expectations to meet this book did not disappoint, and in my opinion this is an absolute must-read for any Spiderman fan.

Amazing prequel to the PS4 Spider-Man game! The narrator did a great job voicing the characters. There are multiple points of view and a wonderful narrative that is great for casual Marvel fans and superfans alike. People with no Spider-man knowledge at all might be a little lost since this isn't an origin story. In order to find out what happens when the book ends you will need to play the game.

I love Spider-Man. He's my favorite hero. Be it Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or any other Spider linked hero, I love it. That being said, I don't automatically like something just because Spider-Man is in it, but I'm happy to report that I enjoyed this quite a bit. David Liss wrote a great story that was only a tad predictable. Pete Cross was a good narrator though sometimes his voices got muddled in my head because they weren't distinct enough, but all in all, this was a very fun audiobook.

Excellent audio narration and a great prequel to Insomniac's Spider-Man made for a really good audiobook. It doesn't exist merely to prop up Spider-Man 2018 but it does a good job of filling in a few gaps while telling its own story with characterizations that feel consistent with the Insomniac Spider-Man universe. My only quibble was that there were a couple times when Peter suddenly had magical omnipotence and could tell what other characters were thinking as if he had read the same thing I had from their point of view. He already has super powers so that felt kind of lazy but overall the quips and the thwips were good

I love watching Spider-Man movies, but was not too sure about reading or listening to this book. I was pleasantly surprised and ended up enjoying this. The story was fact paced and I have never felt bored at any point. Although, I did feel the ending a little abrupt, all in all I liked this.

I’m a lifelong comic book fan and have read quite a few superhero novels in my day.
As a Spider-Man fan, I was hoping for a lot from this book.
With Spider-Man swinging around and flinging webbing, it was great fun.
Poor Peter Parker, ever the underdog, just couldn’t catch a break.
The villains were mostly good.
The would-be Spider-Man was a great opponent for our hero.
The Kingpin is always an excellent choice.
The only problem I had was with Maya Lopez. I really didn’t care about her when she was in the book. Her backstory wasn’t compelling and her current storyline did nothing for me.
I listened to the audio version of this. The narrator wasn’t bad, for the most part. Sometimes his inflection on words pulled me out of the story. Never completely, but just enough to make me pause for a few seconds.
One thing I did notice about this book was that everyone seemed to be obsessed with some one of some thing.

I listened to this with my boyfriend on a road trip and he loved it (this is his star rating since I’m not a fan of marvel) I loved being able to share in my love of audio books with him and I think he may be a convert lol

First off the narrator is perfect for this book. Narration is 5/5

The story is kind of weak. I mean it’s a Spider-man story and if you really love Spiderman, you’ll probably at least like this one. If you somehow don’t know much about Spider-man, I wouldn’t start with this one.

It’s apparently a video game tie-in. The gist of the story is pretty simple - there are two Spider-mans. The real one and a far more evil version.. Spidey himself is pretty quiet on the subject, so much so that much of the general population has started to assume maybe it really is Spider=man, maybe he’s turned into a bad guy.

Don’t worry, Spider-man is on the case, despite his own personal issues, he’s going to get to the bottom of it.

I loved this book and this audiobook. I felt like this was exactly Spider-Man talks and his relationship with Mary Jane made me laugh. I liked the villains and the storyline and felt like it was an interesting story.

Spider-Man faces an imposter trying to frame him for murder. Will he overcome this challenge like he has all the others? Or is Spider-Man really just out of his league and having to go on the lamb?

Classic Spider-Man with a modern marvel twist. It feels like I was reading the original comics again not the Disney taken over franchise movie scripts. Finally what we all love about graphic novel comic books is back!

Spider-Man and a detective work together to take down Fisk who had come back to frame Spider-Man and reach his king pin title again. He wants revenge and he’s determined to get it. Or is it really Fisk that has it out for Spider-Man this time?

Excited to work with the police finally jumps on board with the detective. You don’t want to miss the turns you’re taken from there!

Corruption, crime bosses, hero work, and plenty of visuals left with the listener.

Thank you Netgalley for this ALC!

I very much enjoyed this audiobook.
I liked the story and I think the marathon did a great job.

This is a prequel to the PS4 game. I haven't played the game unfortunately but my husband has it so I might now have to play the game.
