After reading the first book, I loved the universe and the characters so I had to read more. The background is unique and the writing style so alive and vibrant. Can't wait to see if there is more in this series!

I love this world and these characters. This book really nails the mix of historical fiction and mystery, and makes the issues the characters face resonate with a modern audience. 4 stars because I thought the mystery in the first one was a touch more interesting but I reallllly liked this and will 1000% keep reading the series and the author.

Magic. Mystery. History.
Lovely combination.

This is a great sequel of the first book, The Conductor. I read the first book in April and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I don't really read mysteries but that was really good. And so is this one. I loved Hetty more here.

An action packed mystery with lots of magic and a very interesting backdrop, set in a post-civil-war Philadelphia. Benjy and Hetty continue as supernatural detectives, investigating a mysterious fire that seems to have left only one house intact. They also try to maintain their new fledgling funeral home business, while more deaths and unnatural events draw them into an old treasure haunt, with a vengeful pursuer who seems to target them and their friends. There is more intrigue in this story as old allegiances are tested and it is unclear who are friends and who are enemies. However, I was missing the development of the love story between Hetty and Benjy who are now a bona fide couple, since the convoluted mysteries have superseded all else and almost all of their interactions were case related.

Thank you Mariner Books and Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. #TheUndertakers #NetGalley

Ahhhhh this lived up to my expectations entirely! I absolutely love these characters and was thrilled to be able to jump back into their world.

Once again Hetty and Benjy are taking on a magical mystery but this time we get flashbacks peppered throughout the current adventure. This felt like a nice way of giving a glimpse of Hetty's backstory without taking away from the main storyline.

I adore the banter and relationship between Hetty and Benjy, they really seem like a team and don't fall into stereotypical roles. They continue to balance each other in a believable way.

I cannot wait for the next book of the series and could easily see a companion novella covering celestial magic. I'd even love to get spinoffs for the other characters, they're all so interesting.

I was eager to read more about the adventures of Hetty, Benjy and their friends and this book did not disappoint. Nicole Glover has created a rich world that I hope I get to visit again.

A Murder mystery fantasy with a post civil war backdrop... fantastic!
I didn't realize this was a sequel until I started reading this but I didn't feel I need to read the first book to truly enjoy this book.
I liked the magic system or celestial magic. It was really interesting.
This is a perfect book for fall/spooky season because it has the perfect Halloween vibes.
Fully recommend this series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review

A joyous and action packed mystery adventure that is a fabulous follow up to Book 1. I can't wait to see what Nicole Glover does next.

Despite not reading the first book in the series, I felt extremely intrigued and really enjoyed this book. This book is a really nice combination of murder mystery and fantasy. I loved everything about The Undertakers from the backdrop of post-civil-war Philadelphia to the characters and the overall plot. The Undertakers is amazing and I have to read the first book for some context right now!

Netgalley book for review!~. This is a fun mystery and this time the friends get to help, too. I’m grateful to get to read an advanced copy because I enjoyed the first one so much. I’m still confused how they make the funeral home business work but they’re apparently still keeping it going. Seems to me they have more luck becoming private detectives honestly!

Once again the past and present collide here with a touch of magic and mystery and for the most part I was down for it! There were times I found Benjy’s amazingness at EVERYTHING to be a bit exhausting but I still like the couple as a firm team. They do work well together. If you liked the first book you’ll probably like this one too. I would not recommend this book as a standalone read though!

I will definitely read whatever comes next.

a great sequel to the first book. I love the interludes as a way of exploring Hetty's and Benji's backstories. The magic system is still a solid, and a strength of the book. The mystery is solid and is riveting. I cannot wait to see what is store next for this author and this series.

I loved this book. I like how it fuses both magic and mystery. I love Hetty a lot and I love her fight scenes where she unleashes her celestial magic. I like the friendships in this book and I'm so excited to read the next book because that cliffhanger was so good.

Hetty is married to Benji. They are discussing the recent strange fires. People are taking to potioms to save themselves and their homes. One home withstands a fire and they are intrigued.

I did not finish reading her her first book, so far not disappointed with what I have read so far. Then I saw this one and like a nutty bookseller as myself, stopped reading the first and started on this one. It's all Black Girl and Black Man magic and I'm enjoying going back and forth reading about Hetty and Benjy during slavery, racism abound to solve a mystery while using magic. What an interesting way of solving a murder. You have to really read both books to get a good feeling about some of the nastiest characters and intelligent black folks. This is so far, damn good. I just love going back and forth thru both books. Loving it!!!

Part 2 is finally here. Hetty and Ben are back, along with their family and friends. We have another mystery to solve, in between we get more backstory on the family as well as Hetty and Ben's time as freedom fighters. Some nefarious characters are back and romances. This is an action packed, twisty and enlightening story.

I received a free ARC. I am leaving my honest review.

In The Conductors, Nicoĺe Glover created a fascinating magical world peopled with amazing characters. In this second book she expands upon that world.

The Undertakers offers glimpses of the main characters' past as they solve a mystery in their present.

I was drawn into the magical post Civil War world and the community of black practitioners, The characters are colorful yet highly relateable. The plot is well constructed and paced.

Thankfully, the book ends with a set up for another installment in the series.

Well, I mainly want to thank Netgalley, the author and her team behind this book.

This is the sequel to The Conductors and in my opinion, it is a better book, it deals more with the main characters, as well as finding their point of departure. Hetty is a strong character and I like the way the author portrays her, I might even say I love this character.

The author leaves us in suspense with the ending, of course winking at a third part that I already want to read.

The Undertakers is a great new entry in this series, keeping everything that made the first book so good while building on the world and characters in a meaningful way. We get more glimpses of not only what Benjy and Hetty were up to prior to the series start but also provides more insight into the lives of their friend group and how they all met. There's also more information on the various magic systems and how celestial magic compares, which I enjoyed. For the mystery side of things, the formula is very much the same from the first book with the added bonus of more assistance from their friends in the actual investigation. Glover does a great job of tying everything together in a way that's satisfying and not a complete surprise while still keeping the mystery aspect engaging. This ends with a clear hook for a third book, which I'm greatly looking forward too, the world Glover has created is fantastic.
