The Spartans are one of my all time favorite historical topics, so I did need to swallow some pride to go into this book that proudly states it's going to shatter the myth of Spartan supremacy.

I shouldn't have worried though, while Myke Cole does a fantastic job of dispelling some of the myths and legends surrounding the Spartans, this incredibly well researched title still affords the Spartans the title of an elite military force while still showing the humaness inherent to the society that is often lost, or purposely overlooked.

Another fantastic entry from Myke Cole!

This is a good book that ultimately was just not for me. The writing style is readable and clear, if not quite as personable as I was expecting. In the end, I was just not as interested in the detailed nitty gritty of ancient warfare, and I guess I was hoping for more social commentary as the myth the author was taking on relates to today.

If you're interested in military history, ancient Greek/Mediterranean history, definitely give it a shot! Ooh, it would also be good for fantasy writers looking to up their world building game by getting plausible real world details.

A fresh, illuminating perspective on the history of Greece, focusing on but certainly not solely about Sparta. This well-researched book is an entertaining read that sheds light on some of the myths about Sparta.

This is a well researched book on the Spartans. The author covers all areas of their training and wars with other countries. The bronze lie also exposes myths and lies associated with the Spartans. Plenty of action that keeps you satisfied and wanting more with each page you turn. Best book on Spartans I have ever read.

In an attempt to bring the Spartans back to a level that makes them human, Myke Cole has deeply succeeded in this area. He has utilized the well known primary sources of the Greek world to pain the Spartans as simply human whereas most believe this still elite warrior society as mythical beings. The Spartans were still an elite force and Cole demonstrates this through detailing their training and exploits in battle. What is even ,ore fascinating is Cole shares some of the major defeats the Spartans had as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a fresh perspective into this subject.
