Un premier tome d'une saga que j'ai apprécié, qui m'a beaucoup touché par les thèmes abordés et dont je meurs de connaître la suite !

Lorsque les marées montantes de ma vie culminent, je me retrouve aux prises avec les courants de la tempête. Le premier dilemme est la dette de jeu de mon père. Maman rebondit rapidement de la situation avec mon père. Elle le prouve en se faisant un nouvel homme. Son Rico Suave n'est que la pointe de l'iceberg : elle nous fait traverser l'État pour vivre avec lui et ses deux fils.
Ma sœur aînée extravertie s'intègre parfaitement – elle est tout le contraire de moi. Je suis Madison Guillory, du genre timide et calme. En apprenant à tirer le meilleur parti des pires situations, j'envisage de donner une chance à ma nouvelle famille.
Vivre avec mes futurs demi-frères est pour le moins intéressant. Ils sont comme la nuit et le jour. J'ai plus en commun avec le frère décontracté, et nous devenons instantanément amis. Je m'adapte à Taylor High, et le frère arrogant commence même à grandir avec moi. Peut-être que tout s'arrangera après tout.
Ma vie semble enfin se mettre en place jusqu'à ce qu'une nuit épouvantable brise mes rêves. Mon monde est bouleversé à cause des conséquences que je dois maintenant supporter.
Les souvenirs de cette nuit se cachent dans l'ombre pour me tourmenter. Si je pense à ce qui s'est passé, je vais succomber à ma peur. Son visage m'a méprisé. Personne ne me croira si j'avoue, pas même ma propre sœur. Je détiens la clé de mon secret le plus sombre, désespéré de le garder enfermé.

J'ai été chamboulée par cette lecture ! Les thèmes que va aborder l’autrice dans son texte ont eu l'effet d'un coup de poing en moi. Et je ne parle pas du style d'écriture percutant dont chaque mot a transpercé mon petit coeur jusqu'à la dernière page.
À travers le personnage de Madison et de son point de vue sur les événements du roman, j'ai été confrontée à une de ces réalités que peut connaître un enfant, un adolescent face aux violences familiales.
Pour avoir travaillé pour la Direction de la Protection de la Jeunesse, je sais que les réalités familiales sont loin d'être douces et faciles. Je sais que ce n'est ni la faute des parents ni celle des enfants. Et je sais que même ce qu'on ne peut imaginer peut être réellement vécu par quelqu'un d'autre. La négligence, l'abandon, les mauvais traitements psychologiques, les troubles de comportements, les abus physiques et sexuels... On est toujours loin de vraiment comprendre tout ce que ça englobe et tout ce qu'une personne concernée peut vivre.
Franchement, Madison et sa situation familiale m'ont touché. Le poids qu'elle porte sur ses épaules, ce secret qui la bouffe de l'intérieur m'ont bouleversée.
La reconstruction qu'elle essaye de faire avec ses demi-frères et surtout avec sa relation avec Justin ajoute une note d'espoir à ce texte.
Évidemment, je prends le temps de parler de tout ça mais il n'y a pas juste ça dans le roman. On va suivre Madison dans sa nouvelle école. Elle va faire de nouvelles rencontres, se faire des amis et peut-être plus.
Tout le long du roman, je me suis beaucoup questionnée quant à ce secret que Madison cache. Le suspens est de mise et l’autrice a su doser les révélations dans ce roman. Aussi, j'ai beaucoup aimé les autres personnages qui gravitent autour de notre protagoniste !
Il me tarde d'avoir la suite entre les mains et d'en savoir plus !

A debut of a new series that I appreciated, which touched me a lot by the themes addressed and which I am dying to know the sequel!

When the rising tides of my life peak, I’m left struggling with the currents of the storm. The first dilemma is my dad’s gambling debt. Mama bounces back quickly from the ramifications it causes. She proves this by getting a new man. Her Rico Suave is just the tip of the iceberg—she moves us across state to live with him and his two sons.
My outgoing, older sister fits right in—she’s the total opposite of me. I am Madison Guillory, the shy, quiet type. Taught to make the best of even the worst situations, I contemplate giving my new family a chance.
Living with my future stepbrothers is interesting, to say the least. They’re like night and day. I have more in common with the laid-back brother, and we become instant friends. I’m adjusting to Taylor High, and the arrogant brother is even starting to grow on me. Maybe everything will work out after all.
My life finally seems to be falling into place until a dreadful night shatters my dreams. My world is flipped upside down because of the consequences I must now bear.
The memories of that night lurk in the shadows to torment me. If I think of what happened, I’ll succumb to my fear. His face has scorned me. No one will believe me if I confess, not even my own sister. I hold the key to my darkest secret, desperate to keep it locked away.

I was overwhelmed by this reading! The themes that the author will address in her text had the effect of a punch in me. And I'm not talking about the punchy writing style that every word pierced my little heart until the last page.
Through the character of Madison and her point of view on the events of the book, I was confronted with one of those realities that a child, a teenager can know when faced with family violence.
Having worked for the Youth Protection Department, I know that family realities are far from sweet and easy. I know it's neither the parents' fault nor the children's fault. And I know that even what one cannot imagine can actually be experienced by someone else. Neglect, abandonment, psychological mistreatment, behavioral disorders, physical and sexual abuse... We are still far from really understanding all that includes and all that a person concerned can live.
Honestly, Madison and her family situation touched me. The weight she carries on her shoulders, this secret that eats her from the inside upset me.
The reconstruction that she is trying to do with her half-brothers and especially with her relationship with Justin adds a note of hope to this text.
Obviously, I take the time to talk about all of this but there's not just that in the story. We're gonna follow Madison to her new school. She will meet new people, make friends and maybe more.
Throughout the story, I wondered a lot about this secret Madison is hiding. Suspense is in order and the author has balanced well the revelations in her book. Also, I really liked the other characters that revolve around our protagonist!
I look forward to having the rest in my hands and knowing more!

I read this book recently. And woohoo...it was a great emotional roller coaster ride. It is a coming of age book..
Our main character is Madison Guillory who stumbles upon her father's debt ridden situation. The financial condition of the family is far stretched and ultimately it leads to her father's death. She is already drowning in the sea of grief when her mother introduces her daughters - Madison and Tanya to Regan. Without discussing with her daughters, her mother decides to move in with Regan and his two sons - Justin and Jackson in the States.

Things escalate when Madison and Justin start coming together emotionally. Oh.. that love and romance between them is so pure. I loved it. But one night everything changes for Madison. Her life turns upside down. She can not bear to look at the face she loves. She cannot confide in anyone. Her own sister ditches her.

This book is narrated from Madison's point of view. The characters were so well developed. At times I felt great distress alongwith Madison while at times I wished to choke Charlote and Tanya for mistreating Madison.

The book is surely going to take one on a roller coaster ride. This book deals with very sensitive issues like child abuse, drugs, teenage pregnancy..

I absolutely loved the book. In the next book that would follow I really wish for Madison and Justin to be together...
