An insightful book that provides some simple but difficult techniques to change the way you look at the challenges you are taken on. The book reviews the steps by changing the way you think about things as well as the punish versus reward system on how to achieve not only weightless but exercise and the goals on your list to accomplish in life. Definitely worth the read to reset and rethink as well a tackle the things set before you. Talk to yourself as you would talk to a friend and take the small accomplishments as well as the big ones.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity.

Dr. Gary Foster, Chief Science Officer at WeightWatchers, has written an informative and helpful book about the seven mindset shifts he believes is necessary for permanent weight loss.

I found this book to be very well written with practical principles that can be applied to not only weight loss but life in general. This book reinforces my belief that the majority of successful weight loss is not what you eat but what is between your ears.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own

I thought The Shift gave some good insights into shifting your mindset to be healthy. It's about turning your thoughts around and not being so negative/hard on yourself when it comes to weight loss.

This was an interesting book that deals with the mind-set of weight loss and self-image. I have followed the WW plan a few times in my life and understand the way to break bad habits and create better ones now. Dr Foster is a psychologist, obesity researcher and behaviour change expert as well as the Chief Science Officer at WW. This book gives practical details about how to achieve positive lifestyle changes and self-image.
I don't think it presents anything new, but as with all changes to be made in life, you need to be in the right frame of mind to receive and act on it and this book helps get you there.

This book was received as an ARC from St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I love this book because of the fact is not about food, lifestyles or scale victories but the one part of the body that is the most powerful and most underrated, the mind. Healthy living and weight loss is more of a mental game rather than a physical game. I learned so much about cognitive behavioral therapy through this book that it gave me some helpful tips to apply to my own healthy living journey and I can't wait to pay it forward and share them to my friends, family, and our library community. When I was a member of WW my leader always preached non scale victories such as eating more fruits, drinking more water, having clothing fit better, having more energy and most importantly feeling great about yourself and loving yourself (this one is so important to me). This book will really circulate well in our collection just in time for the new year.

We will consider adding this title to our R Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

This book focuses largely on the mental and emotional changes to create lasting change in a weight loss journey. It is an important part of finding success, and there are very few books like it.

The Shift is a great book for someone who has struggled with weight loss. It's not your typical eat this, not that type diet book. Dr. Foster breaks down why most diets fail long term and ways to "shift" your thinking. The thing that spoke to me the most was to work out of your strengths instead of your weaknesses, i.e., thinking negatively about your weight and or the choices you made that day. This book is more about mindset in general. I highly recommend it for anyone stuck in their negativity and no longer making weight loss progress.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.

The Shift is not just another book about diets. This book tries to assist you in changing your thinking in order to make long lasting lifestyle changes. This book is not focused on what you eat or a number on the scale, it is focused on being healthier. I really enjoyed this book due to that emphasis. There were many good thoughts throughout this book such as: being kind to ourselves, learning how to be grateful, and also, not comparing ourselves to others. These are all important lessons, not only for weight loss, but also, for living a happy, healthy life. This book is an easy to follow, easy to implement practical guide to improving your thinking which would impact many areas of your life, not just weight loss. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have been a member of WW (formerly Weight Watchers) for several years now, and that’s why I requested the advance copy of The Shift by Dr. Gary Foster. I’m not typically one to request and review non-fiction or self-help, and at the end of the day, this IS self-help. What I appreciate about this book is Dr. Foster’s background. An adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania and a clinical psychologist who has spent years studying obesity and working with clients, Dr. Foster is also the Chief Science Officer at WW.

The Shift is not a diet book. It doesn’t tell you what to eat. It doesn’t tell you to count calories. It doesn’t even walk you through the WW plan. (I imagine that’s considered proprietary.) That’s how it differs dramatically from other books that would be considered diet books. Heck, there isn’t a single recipe in the whole thing. I’m sure we’ve all heard people on a diet say, “It’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle.” I’ve used those same words myself, but a “lifestyle” doesn’t force you to eliminate foods. And neither does WW.

This book gives you seven strategies for shifting the way you think about your weight and your health and yourself as a person. There is nothing earth-shattering in these pages. There isn’t a magic bullet that’s going to make all your weight-loss woes go away. What you’ll find a lot of, though, are passages that make you think about how you talk to yourself, whom you look to for support, what mental tools you have in your arsenal for your weight-loss journey. It has all of the things I’ve been hearing in WW over the past several years wrapped up in one place.

Dr. Foster doesn’t just rely on his own experience either. He cites documented studies by other experts in their fields, outlined by mindset shift, so that if you want to dig deeper into a specific chapter, you have the information right at your fingertips. The book also includes real-life stories from people about their own mindset shifts and subsequent weight loss successes.

This book doesn’t have to be just about weight loss either. There are a lot of things we think about ourselves and say about ourselves that don’t relate to weight at all. The mind shifts that Dr. Foster talks about apply to many facets of our lives.

A quick read at only 233 pages (with a lot of citations taking up space at the end), you’ll likely be highlighting a lot and find yourself “hmm”-ing quite a bit and realizing that you’d never really thought of something the way Dr. Foster describes it. At least that’s what I did.

I’ll close my review with Dr. Foster’s final take, which really does sum up the mindset shifts pretty well:

“Remember that your weight is not your worth; that you are worth taking care of no matter what you weigh, and that any weight-loss journey is best grounded in the belief of your own value, as is, today. Right now.

“I wish you great success on your journey. And I’ll say it one final time:

“Be patient. Be kind to yourself.”

The Shift is about changing your mindset. Instead of using willpower to drive your diet, utilize skillpower to take detailed steps into your weight loss journey.

The book discusses how to change your negative self-talk. It also goes over research into how to set habits to make it easier to stick to your exercise goals. There are real life examples in each chapter of how the techniques have worked for others.

There is a large quantity of good ideas in The Shift. While it is marketed to WW members, it can be used by anyone trying to reach a goal. I’ve been a member of WW for over a year. It would have been great to receive this book in my welcome pack. Overall, it’s a useful tool to have in your arsenal. 4 stars!

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Dr. Gary Foster’s The Shift - 7 Powerful Mindset Changes for Lasting Weight Loss is a powerful book that will help readers change their mindset helping them along their weight loss journey. In addition to the myths to weight loss, Dr. Foster includes scientific data, helpful tips, advice, and personal stories that address his seven mindset changes. A wonderful resource and one that I am sure I will return to when I need motivation along my own health journey.

This book was really interesting. It caught my eye 1st and foremost because I'm a member of WW hut secondly because I've struggled with weight loss. I pick up books wanting them to tell me what to eat. This book is clear that it will not do that. It's more about building a healthier mindset.

THE SHIFT helps the reader develop a healthy mindset about making positive lifestyle changes. The techniques inside can be leveraged for most positive changes and goals in general.

I appreciated the positivity, the case studies, references, suggested actions, and solid advice provided within. The overall message is that one’s weight has no factor on their worth as a human being and that people should be not only kind to others, but also kind to themselves.

The mindset changes include self-compassion, keeping setbacks from spiraling by employing a growth mindset, practicing gratitude, setting smaller/actionable goals, harnessing habits, and finding joy in the journey to name a few. One of the shifts is about playing to strengths rather than trying to fix weaknesses and references a character strength assessment tool, which was a nice bonus.

A few of the big takeaways for me were a remainder that other people’s wins do not define or diminish our own and how crushing small goals creates momentum, becoming stepping stones to accomplishing big goals.

The author works closely with Weight Watchers aka WW and mentions the organization a few times, however he does not recommend a particular diet as this book is not program specific.

While the book speaks of seven “shifts,” my ARC appeared to only include six, but I am confident the final version will be complete.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Dr. Gary Foster’s 7 Mindset Shifts to help achieve weightloss. Had some good points on changing your thinking about how you are eating and treating yourself. Not a lot of new information, have heard most of these before, but it was an interesting read. Seemed more like info from Noom instead of WW.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.

The Shift was exactly what I was hoping for: informative and motivational. While the information provided wasn’t necessarily new to me, it was presented in an entertaining way that made me rethink the ways I view weight loss. As a lifetime WW member who is currently over my goal due to stress and other personal life reasons, I felt like the book was a good reset for me that followed the WW values. It would be great for anyone who needs to shift their mindset when it comes to weight loss, especially those new to WW!

This book is an important companion to anyone struggling with the yo-yo journey of trying to lose weight like I have. What works with this book is it not your typical "diet" book -- it does not read like an "infomercial" of the glut of diet books published promising weight loss if you follow the exact plan of what to eat and not what to eat. Instead this book focuses on the mindset we need as we embark on our journey to get healthier and lose weight or get in better shape. I emphasize "healthier" because the author Dr. Foster is the Chief Scientific Officer for WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) and the emphasis with this plan (of which I am a member) - is on overall health not just how we show up on the scale. Some of the information I have heard before from my participation in WW and some is a summary of ideas and concepts from other books and resources (e.g., Beck Diet and Charles Duhigg "The Power of Habit").

I really like how the book is structured -- Overall idea "Shift" followed by specific ideas, an example of a personal shift, Skill-building techniques that we can put into action and resources.

I recommend this book if you are looking for an additional compendium of ideas for how to shift your mindset to support healthier changes.
