I enjoyed this time slip novel of two women 100 years apart living and working on the same steamship while also discovering their dreams and their own loves.

Devyn in present day has been tasked with making the Belle ship the top wedding venue. She only has so much time to get it done, her boss has lots of confidence in her, if only she could have bit of that. Not only that but a stranger by the the name of Chase Jones shows up asking for her help in finding a woman from his ancestral past. In return he will help her advertise. What could go wrong with his charming personality and their witty banter? Well, Devyn for one does not want to loser her heart again to a smooth talker and I can certainly understand given her story that comes out.

Hattie Louis was abandoned and raised by Duffy the steamboat captain. She is quite a tomboy and plans to spend her life on the Idlewild if she could just get her license, which was basically unheard of for women at that time. But when Duffy begins handing over the reigns to a complete stranger, Hattie wants to know why. Little does she know the adventure, love, and the secrets that await her.

I liked both of these stories a lot. There was quite a bit of a mystery and hidden agendas that all came together and wrapped up neatly by the end.

I loved this historical mystery/romance. The dual timeline wove together in ways I didn't expect and I never knew what might happen next. Chase and Devyn, Hattie and Jack, they took this story and made it real. I enjoyed the deep messages of faith and understanding that God is with us no matter the trials that come our way. The history of the steamboat made its way into the story without overwhelming, and it was great to have that bit of the past underlining the characters as they navigate the troubled river waters. I found a connection with Devyn and her drive for perfection, her inability to function when things go wrong. It made her relatable and inspiring. And the comedic relief between the characters had me in stitches! Excellently done. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. This dual timeline novel offers love stories from two different time periods and weaves them together in a suspenseful manner. Devyn Asbury serves as a wedding coordinator on a historic steamboat on the Ohio River and is presented with a mysterious photograph and a challenge to discover the story of the woman called Hattie, who once worked on the boat. Thus, similar settings for both times unite the tales as well as the lives of the intriguing characters. Secrets from the past beg to be uncovered but also present a compelling challenge for them, including danger in the 1920s. So many elements add to the richness of this story and really drew me in. I loved all the twists and details. Hattie’s account is written in first person so it makes it easier to keep them straight, but for some reason the name Devyn made me think of a man and I had to keep reminding myself it was a woman. I recommend this book to those who enjoy history and mystery. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own. #UndercurrentofSecrets #NetGalley

4.5 Stars

In Undercurrent of Secrets, Rachel Scott McDaniel tackles the dual time genre with precision as she carries readers through current day and the 1920s with a mystery that kept me on my toes and double the swoony romance.

In modern day, Devyn and Chase work together to solve the mystery of a photo while planning for a once-in-a-lifetime event aboard the Belle. In the past, Hattie and Jack find each other in the midst of the activity of the same boat which carries cargo along the Ohio River.

McDaniel intersperses the chapters of the book in such a way that a discovery in the present seamlessly leads to more details of that discovery in the past. It made me need to turn the pages. Add in a few twists along the way, and this is one book you will devour from start to finish and then want to pick up again to see what you missed the first time around.

I enjoyed this dual timeline story. The banter between the characters was fun to read. The mystery was engrossing. The several twists and turns surprised me. (I didn't see that coming!) The Christian part of the story was not heavy handed.
I would recommend this story to those readers who enjoy an intriguing mystery and a sweet romance.

A true delight:
This was a wonderful dual timeline romance novel with the perfect amount of mystery and intrigue mixed in. I found it flowed over my soul and refreshed me. The author had such a wonderful way with words and here is an example of her eloquence: "May as well have said “bon voyage” to my heart, because it had sailed free from my ownership and dropped anchor in Jack’s hands."
Poor Devyn had been hurt in the past and I enjoyed seeing her find healing and love again. My heart equally went out to Hattie who had struggled to find a place of belonging in the world. I thought the pacing was excellent as little snippets of each of their lives was revealed at a time and I just loved the ending.

I loved this book. It was so interesting with the romance and it’s many secrets.

I really liked Devyn and Chase’s romance. And once I new what Chase’s secret was I was just waiting for Devyn to find out because I knew what she assumed it was couldn’t be that simple.

Hattie and Jack’s romance is also sweet but the odds are definitely stacked against them and I wondered if there could be a happy ending for them.

A great addition to this series.

A very interesting story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading! The title of this book was letting you know that there were secrets to be discovered.

I loved that the book had four leading characters: Hattie, Jack, Devyn and Chase. Hattie and Jack's story was in the 1920s. Devyn and Chase's tale occurred in the present time. Devyn and Chase soon discovered that there were secrets to be told that were tied to the Belle of Louisville. Who was Hattie? What happened to her? Was Devyn ever going to get the answers she was looking for?

Rachel Scott McDaniel is still a fairly new author--- this only being her third published novel--- but I have to say that she has very quickly become one to watch for me. Undercurrent of Secrets is truly a prime example as to why that is! She has such a beautiful way of telling a story that draws the reader right into the past--- just the way a good historical fiction read should.

This particular novel is a time slip novel going back and forth between current times and the 1920s. This type of story can be hit or miss for me, as they can often end up more confusing than anything else, but I was happy to see that it was done wonderfully in this case too. I didn't feel lost, and felt equally interested in both timelines too. This story had just the right blend of mystery, romance and history to keep me wanting to read on! If you enjoy historical romance, this is certainly one to check out!

This is a book I read in one day; I dare you to try to do otherwise! Captivating from the first page, the story of the Belle of Louisville steamboat has everything you’d want – history, romance, mystery. Devyn and Chase’s search for missing information about Hattie, who lived aboard the Idlewild in the 1920’s makes for a very interesting time-slip novel. The Idlewild is an earlier name for the Belle, and I found Hattie’s adventures with Duffy poignant. All of this exploration is happening while Devyn is trying to prepare the boat for the chance of a lifetime to win the coveted Timeless Wedding Venue award.

If you are a fan of time slip books, this is a must read. It flows smoothly from the past to the present without missing a beat. The story is very intriguing and there are historical facts scattered throughout the beautiful pages. It moves at a great pace and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in the last or go forward at times. The author is gifted with pulling readers in with characters that jump off the pages and capture the allure of mystery and love.

I liked the setting of a steamboat and how it was the focus of the story between past and present. I would love to go on one and experience the majestic voyage as it takes me across the river. The author describes the steamboat in a way that makes you want to be a passenger and slip back in time. I enjoyed learning how it operates and how popular it was in the 1900s.

There rare four main characters that are relevant to the story. Devyn and Chase are fun to get to know. Poor Devyn has been taken advantage of by someone and finds herself dumped over social media. How awful can that be to be humiliated in front of millions of people? At least she has her wedding coordinator job. I think she shines at the job and you can tell she loves hosting weddings on the boat. Chase comes into her life as a mystery at first but I knew he had a secret. With the snarky remarks back and forth, I wasn’t sure this relationship would amount to anything. Oh but the witty Chase dangles a mystery in front of Devyn that entices her to help him. Thus begins the parallel between these two and our next set of characters.

Hattie is probably my favorite character in the book. She has had an unfortunate childhood when she thinks she has been abandoned. The man who takes her in just happens to be the Captain of Idlewild. I loved the antics Hattie found herself in on the boat and proved to the men she could carry her weight aboard the vessel. Jack appears on the boat but he has a secret as well. Their encounters are not always friendly and Hattie has a hard time trusting Jack.

Now that’s all I’m giving away about the story. I will assure readers that they are in for a treat as the story unfolds. The author delivers a tale of mystery complete with love letters, secret meetings and an ending that made me cry. I have put this book on my top favorite list of books for 2021.

Devyn Asbury is having one of the worst days of her life when Chase Jones approaches her with a mystery attached to an old photograph.

A century earlier Hattie Louis, the daughter of the steamboat captain, can do it all from playing the calliope to navigating. She stows aboard a steamboat to escape her evil uncle.

A captivating read with dual-timelines 100 years apart, tied together by a steamboat and a photograph. Devyn is under a lot of pressure to pull out all of the stops to pull together a winning entry in a wedding venue contest. Working with Chase is a welcome distraction that proves helpful as she learns more of The Belle of Louisville's history on the river. I liked Chase, he is a really nice guy who thinks the best of others, and is passionate about the past. He is intelligent and patient.

I was equally invested in both of the storylines, it had great pace, and was well researched. Hattie loves being on the river, and finds a refuge there when running for her life. An engaging high stakes adventure, I admired Hattie for her good sense of priorities, level-headness and faith.

Overall, an excellent dual timeline read, with an intriguing plot and engaging characters. A story about two courageous young women who aim beyond what is expected of them, with the help of faith and new friends, finding lasting love. Highly recommend, one of my favorites of this multi-author series so far!

I adore the Split-Time genre, but so often I find that one era gets less development than the other, or there’s one character whose story I simply couldn’t care less about. This was absolutely not the case with Undercurrent of Secrets! Rachel Scott McDaniel has managed to seamlessly weave her contemporary and historical timelines into an unputdownable masterpiece.

I loved all of the POV characters—each was special and endearing in their own way—and both plotlines were fully developed and intriguing; never once did the story lull. Each love story was perfect—both full of beautiful and adorable moments and each paced perfectly.

The mystery was expertly written, each new aspect revealed bringing with it a hint of what was to come. It unfolded slowly, but not too slowly. It was a pleasure to sit back and watch it open up as it reached its satisfying conclusion.

I’d recommend it to fans of Rachel Hauck, Melissa Tagg, Pepper Basham, and Julie Lessman, as well as to anyone who enjoys a good split-time romance threaded with mystery.

I'm not really a fan of dual time stories but I was pleasantly surprised with Undercurrent of Secrets. Rachel Scott McDaniel's story set on the famous ship The Belle of Louisville wraps the reader into heartache, heartbreak, and intrigue as Devyn and Chase try to solve who Hattie Louise is and what she was to their relatives. Both Devyn and Hattie are strong women who pick themselves up after things don't turn out as they'd like and forge a new path their way. Great support characters, fantastic setting wonderful snippets from history, readers won't be disappointed.

The currents of the past flow like a river into the present...

OK, I'm just going to tell you right off that I loved Undercurrent Of Secrets! Any story that features a heroine who loves classic movies is great, but when my favorite Audrey Hepburn movie, How To Steal A Million, gets some screen time, well, that's what I call a good book!

Seriously, though, I did really enjoy this fourth Doors To The Past novel. Rachel Scott McDaniel had me equally as immersed in Devyn's 21st century social media crazy world as Hattie's 1920's steamboat travel era. The emotion, the drama, and the romance caught my attention but it was the overarching century old mystery that really captured me. I was kept guessing, some of which turned out to be right and some not so much, right up to the, might I say, very satisfying end.

Undercurrent Of Secrets was a great read and I can honestly say that it's probably my favorite Doors To The Past book yet. This series has been a lot of fun to read, each book is different but they all share the same mix of romance and mystery in a dual timeline format, and I haven't missed a one. Rachel Scott McDaniel is a new to me author but I sincerely hope it won't be my last. I really liked her storytelling style and I look forward to reading more from her...

Previously having read one of Rachel Scott McDaniel's books, I was eager to read Undercurrents of Secrets. It was quite good, and I enjoyed it. A legendary steamboat, The Belle of Louisville, connects the past and the present. This dual-time drama of Hattie, the adopted daughter of the steamboat captain, and Devyn, a wedding planner with hopes of ensuring The Belle brings home the prestigious Timeless Wedding Venue title, drew me in from the start. With mystery and secrets, twists to the plot, and not just one, but two, sweet romances the story moves quickly. The author does a great job with smooth transitions between the two time periods. As the reader moves back and forth from the past to the present, cliffhangers keep the interest high. I enjoyed the tidbits of information about the workings of steamboats. Throughout the story, the author blends in a thread of faith in God, the God who leads His children, and can be relied on 'in both the still and the troubled waters.' Readers who enjoy historical romance with a bit of suspense will not want to miss Undercurrents of Secrets. I look forward to reading more from Ms. McDaniel. Thank you to NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. I was not required to write a review, and the opinions are my own.

I loved this sweet split time novel, set aboard the Belle of St Louis, a beautiful old boat...
Reading about the setting is what initially caught my attention. I think Rachel Scott McDaniel did a fabulous job at showing us this lovely boat, and I enjoyed both of the time periods.
Devyn's task at hand was getting the boat ready for a contest, as a wedding venue. I loved seeing her in action. I also really liked seeing how she and Chase went about trying to solve the mystery of Hattie.
And then, yes, there's Hattie. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her life aboard the Idlewild. I found it fascinating and quite intriguing.
The two time lines melded together perfectly, but it is revealed slowly...and I found a great satisfaction in reaching the end of the book and finally understanding how it all came together.

3.5 ⭐️
Undercurrent of secrets was a Christian romance mystery and my first novel by this author. I liked the dual timelines and was drawn in by the mystery of what happened to Hattie.
Weddings on a boat felt idyllic and I also love history so that part of the story really worked for me. Chase and Jack were definitely great boyfriend material but Devyn and Hattie weren’t as likable. Hattie was so mannish and Devyn was very immature. I did like the story but thought with those few changes this could could of been a 5 star book.
