This book is extraordinary! Within a few pages, I was hooked and completely devoured this story! I absolutely loved the characters- how well developed they were and the way the story flowed so seamlessly. The witty banter and sweet romance added so much to the story. I loved how both Hattie and Devyn learned similar lessons in their faith journey. The heroines were brave and authentic; the heroes were swoony! This story has it all- mystery, danger, intrigue and romance! You won't want to miss this one! I, too, can't wait to read another Rachel Scott McDaniel book!

Okay this is officially my favorite Rachel Scott McDaniel book yet!
This book is a split time that is so well balanced between the past and the present. I loved the light thread of mystery and the contemporary just was so good.
I loved the romance in both time periods. There were some absolutely adorable and swoony scenes in both that just was my favorite parts of this book.

I loved the setting of the riverboat! So interesting how the author used an actual boat for the setting and so you get that peek into the lives of people who lived the riverboat life.

If you want to feel transported grab this one, it's a gem.

Thanks to Netgally I received a complementary copy of this book. All opinions in this review are honest and my own.

Undercurrent of Secrets is the newest dual-storyline in the Doors to the Past series and the best so far! The contemporary story has Devyn working on an historic steamboat and hoping to win a national contest as best wedding venue. Chase comes to her boat looking to solve the mystery of the disappearance of a woman named Hattie who was adopted daughter of the ship captain in the early 1900's. The historical story tells the mystery of Hattie and the mystery of who she really is.
Both storylines holds wonderful surprises for the reader as they intertwine to find not only what happened to Hattie, but the real identities of all the main characters. Both stories keep the reader interested and is a great mystery.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.

Undercurrent of Secrets by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a duel time line and it flowed flawlessly. I never felt the story being disrupted, or annoyed by going from the 1900's to the present time. I enjoyed both time periods, and all the characters. This book contained some suspense, mystery, and two oh so sweet romances. This author knows how to write romance!! She is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more books by her. I loved it!
*I was given a copy by the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

I'd previously read and really loved two other stories in the Doors to the Past series, and I was eagerly looking forward to diving into a third. This was my first experience with a Rachel Scott McDaniel novel, and wow I couldn't have enjoyed it more. She truly nailed the dual timeline, the two swoon worthy and heartwarming romances, and inspired me to study more about the steamboat that plays an integral role throughout the course of the stories happening in each timeline.

I loved how relatable each of the main female protagonists were, and my heart truly hurt for the many horrific things these ladies have had to go through. Perhaps my favorite part of the entire story is how strong the faith element was. With the obstacles that have been thrown into both Hattie and Devyn's pathways, it would have been easy for them to turn bitter and angry. However, instead each lady is determined to keep their eye on Jesus, and trust that He has a plan, even if it's not the plan they would have maybe chosen for themselves.

I can honestly say that this series is quickly becoming a new favorite for me, and I can't recommend this beautifully written dual timeline novel enough. Rachel Scott McDaniel effortlessly pulls the reader into her story, and I could barely bring myself to put this one down once I started it. I can't pick a favorite of the two timelines, as I honestly adored them both, and I was pleasantly surprised at how everything comes together to connect the two stories in ways I never could have seen coming.

Not only do I look forward to continuing on with reading more books from this series in the future, but I also cannot wait to read more books from Rachel Scott McDaniel. She's definitely impressed me with this one, and I can't honestly recommend it enough.

Final Rating: 5/5.

"Then and there Devyn decided her happiness would not hinge on circumstances. She could be filled with joy despite the changes in life."

Rachel Scott McDaniel has penned some great historical fiction that I loved and this novel is clearly her best work yet. In this dual timeline novel, Hattie from the late 1920s speaks to us in first person narrative while Devyn from present time engages us in third person perspective. I loved how a steamboat that has weathered history and age ties the two women's lives together. The author's beautiful and vivid descriptions made me feel like I was a part of the steamboat's crew and a part of the river in both timelines. Hattie and Jack's relationship is sweet, tender, and passionate while Devyn and Chase's interactions and dialogue are cute, witty, fun, and full of sass and flirtations. The underlying tension and suspense in the mystery of who Hattie was and what happened to her is quite delicious, as are the twists and turns in the plot. With well-written, captivating prose and dialogue, a clever and seamless plot, lovable characters, and a nice thread of finding faith and one's true identity, Undercurrent of Secrets is sure to please every reader.

I received the book from Barbour Publishing and also via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

She has done it again! Rachel Scott McDaniel has written a book that has captivated me through and through and let's not even forget mentioning the swoon worthy moments you will encounter while reading this completely intriguing dual time storyline. I must say that sometimes dual time line stories are not all equal, meaning that sometimes you get sucked into one timeline more than another, that is not the case with this story. You are equally immersed in both and intrigued by both so much that at the end of the chapters you want to keep reading. Yes, this was definitely one of those books that kept me up at night and I read it overnight because I just had to know what was going to happen!

We meet 2 set of characters in this story. Devyn and Chase are from the present time line and you fall for them immediately. I mean their banter and chemistry is just dreamy. You feel for Devyn immediately, she has been hurt by a previously relationship and is trying to find out who she is on her own. She is drawn to Chase despite her being super cautious. Hattie and Jack are from the past timeline, set in 1926, and goodness what a good timeline to be in as well! Hattie is not your typical lady. She is a "grab it by the horns" kind of gal and I loved it. She was the only lady, besides the cook, to live amongst all the crew of the Belle and she was one of them. She didn't take any nonsense from them and they didn't give her any! So when Jack enters the picture and joins the crew she is wary and so was I! Why was he there? And why is he being so purposeful about certain things in the ship?

There are other characters that you will fall for like Duffy who is Hattie's "adoptive father" of sorts and Devyn's brother Mitch(who should totally have his own book...just saying...) and I guess I should mention that there is also characters... one in particular that you will want to throw overboard or slap. We can talk about it when you read the book!

Okay, besides all the amazing characters this book has quite the suspense and mystery. There were twists and turns I definitely did not see coming. I will not divulge and tell you what they are because it is really the core of the story and you definitely need to read it for yourself! I promise you will love it!

Overall I thought this was a great book and a wonderful addition to the Doors of the Past series. It doesn't have to be read in order but I must say all the books I have read so far have been stellar. I for one cannot wait to read the next book from Rachel Scott McDaniel she writes great stories filled with intrigue and suspense while interweaving God's faith throughout her stories this one included. If you haven't picked up a book from her yet... what are you waiting for?!

What a delight! With twists and turns and more cliffhangers than a Nancy Drew mystery, I couldn't put this book down. From page one, I was drawn into the story of Devyn, a contemporary heroine who works as a wedding planner aboard the 100-year-old steamboat, The Belle of Louisville. Devyn tugged at my heartstrings, as I began to piece together the story of her broken engagement. Soon, I met Hattie, a feisty and equally likable Prohibition-era girl, raised by the captain of the Idlewild, as the Belle was then known. As the stories of these two heroines intertwine, the ship herself takes on a subtle, but no less important role in the story.

The writing is fresh, the characters likable, and the storylines engaging. This is an author I will be seeking out, for sure!

I received an ARC from NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

I loved this sweet Christian historical romance! The book includes two timelines and follows two love stories connected to one boat and separated by time. It had me crying towards the end and sighing with happiness at the conclusion! I loved how Rachel Scott McDaniel intertwined these stories and taught me something about history at the same time!!

In the first story, Devyn Asbury is an event planner trying to forget a past that includes a too public end to her own engagement! She throws herself into her work and is in the midst of preparation for the final event used for the Timeless Wedding venue competition. She believes that the steamboat- Belle of Louisville deserves that title and could benefit from the publicity. But a distraction comes in the form of Chase Jones who has a century old mystery that he needs her help to solve. The picture of a woman on her steamboat intrigues Devyn and they begin to research the mystery woman.

In the second story, Hattie Asbury has spent her life on this steamboat working with the crew in a variety of unofficial roles. Her adoptive father has taught her well to be the First Mate and so she is surprised her role is taken by Jack Marshall. Unusual things are happening on her steamboat and she won’t rest until she uncovers the truth!

Thanks to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing who so kindly let me have an advanced copy of this book. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review this and share my honest thoughts and opinions! I have added more of Rachel Scott McDaniel’s books to my TBR shelf!!

Excellent dual history storyline focusing on present day Devlyn and Chase who are trying to solve a mystery around the Belle of Louisville and her employees Hattie & Jack. Switching back and forth between the 1920s and present day, secrets unfold. I found myself rooting for both couples and though I had figured out some of the plot before the story ended it was a super enjoyable read. Looking forward to other stories by Ms McDaniel.

This is the first novel I’ve read by Rachel Scott McDaniel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Set on the Ohio River in dual time periods, this novel flows flawlessly between modern times and the 1920’s. Both stories were compelling and completely drew me in. Each story revolves around an old 100 year old steamboat, the Belle of Louisville.

Currently, Devyn is trying to win a prestigious contest that would feature the Belle as a premier wedding venue. She’s recently suffered not only a professional setback, but a broken engagement as well and hopes throwing herself into this contest will help her recover. In walks Chase, a gorgeous, thoughtful guy who is trying to solve a 100 year old mystery of a woman in a torn picture from the 1920’s. He enlists Devyn’s help to find out who the mysterious woman is. As they embark on this quest, they find plenty of intrigue, twists and turns, and romance. However, Chase is hiding his own secret, one that might just ruin their fledgling relationship.

In Prohibition Era 1920’s, Hattie is a young woman who has lived her whole life on the Belle. Adopted as a baby by Duffy, the ship’s captain, Hattie longs to understand her past. When a devastatingly handsome man appears on the ship, she takes him for a stowaway and tackles him before realizing he’s Duffy’s new first mate. At first she resents Jack’s presence, but as they learn more about one another, Hattie realizes she might be in danger of losing her heart. Like in the present, there’s a mystery revolving around this Belle as well, and it’s up to Jack and Hattie to figure out what’s going on.

Both stories were hard to put down. Each chapter or so would leave one story on a cliffhanger only the have the other story do the same thing. The characters were extremely likable and fun to read about. I loved how the two stories were entwined together. While there were a few things that were somewhat predictable, the main mystery was a great surprise. I enjoyed guessing the plot twists to see if I was right. While considered a Christian romance, the religious aspects are woven nicely into the story and are a natural part of the characters’ lives.

Highly recommend this book to those who enjoy dual historical time period novels, clean Christian romances, and a good mystery. I will definitely be reading this author again. Thanks to Celebrate Lit, Barbour Fiction, and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

I enjoy reading dual time line stories and this one will be among my favorites I have read to date. I loved it! Undercurrent of Secrets will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction. Loved learning some of the history of the Belle of Louisville. This dual time historical novel has Devyin, a wedding planner with a secret she's trying to protect. Hattie, having grown up on a steamship finds a secret of her own. Will there secrets intersect? Secrets will come alight in this intriguing tale. Recommended.

Undercurrent of Secrets was my first book by Rachel Scott McDaniel and she blew me away with this fantastic book! I could not have loved it more! 5 Glorious stars!
I love a dual timeline story and Rachel has penned a stunning one reminiscent of the writing style of Kristy Cambron. Two seemingly unconnected stories laced together in such a memorable way has pushed this masterful storyteller onto my favorite authors list.

Undercurrent of Secrets has a unique Steamboat setting that I thoroughly enjoyed. Witty banter is one of my favorite things about characters Devyn and Chase, along with outstanding romantic moments from both them and Jack and Hattie too.

One of my favorite quotes on love, "May as well have said 'bon voyage' to my heart, because it had sailed free from my ownership and dropped anchor in Jack's hands."
On the witty side this one had me smiling, "His mischievous grin looked about as dangerous as blow-drying her hair in the bathtub. And she could do without any more shocks to her system."

The inspirational message of "Love is Bold" is deeply woven throughout this outstanding story and will leave readers sighing with contentment at the wonderful conclusion. Rachel Scott McDaniel is an author I highly recommend. I look forward to reading her other books. I appreciate Barbour Publishing making a copy of Undercurrent of Secrets available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.

Undercurrent of Secrets by Rachel Scot McDaniel is a great story intertwining the past and the present. As the title suggests there are plenty of secrets waiting to be uncovered, some from the past and some from the present time. Devyn is currently working on the Belle as she plans weddings and other events on the historic paddleboat. When a stranger appears trying to unravel a mystery she is convinced to assist him as her love of history rules her mind. Will they entangle the identity of the mysterious woman at the center of their search? What will they learn about their own life journeys through the process? Will their trust in God grow or falter as pressure builds?
I could not put this book down! I was so intrigued and wanted to find out the answers to the mysteries. The characters are so well written they drew me into the story like I was there seeing the moonlight on the water with them. I could also feel their frustration when things were not going well. Things end in realistic ways that are not quite expected but definitely what happens in the real world at times. I will definitely be purchasing this book for gifts in the future. I give it 5 of 5 stars.

Switching back and forth from modern-day to 1920s, the novel does a fantastic job of developing voice and plot twists. The book centers around the riverboat Belle and the hopes and dreams of the women who travel her up and down the river. Devyn has been through a terrible break-up and is trying to start anew. Hattie was abandoned as a baby and raised aboard the ship. Each falls in love unexpectedly and then must face down personal demons. The ending of the book was the best!

The dual timeline in this book is SUPERBLY done. I truly enjoyed the characters and richness of setting in this book. Both couples were a delight to read about—but I think my favorite was Hattie and Jack. I loved how the riverboat was almost a character in and of itself in both timelines, as well as the creek and waterfall! This book was a real treat.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing a review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Time split novel of a present-day wedding coordinator, Devyn, and a young woman abandoned as a baby 100 years earlier, Hattie. Their common thread is the steamboat Belle of Louisville. Devyn is caught waltzing with an imaginary partner by Chase, who asks for her help is finding out who the woman is in a torn photo
It turns out that Hattie’s background isn’t what she was told. The clever twists and Hattie’s connections to Devyn and Chase pile up to a happy ending. Chase is a dream.

Undercurrent of Secrets is an exciting dual-timeline novel by Rachel Scott McDaniel.
I truly loved this story! It’s got it all: history, romance, mystery, plot twists, and a very satisfying ending!
I really enjoyed both the contemporary and historical timelines. I did not know a lot about steamboats before reading this, and I learned a good bit. Both main characters Devyn and Hattie are relatable, their struggles and triumphs realistic. And the heroes are gallant and swoon-worthy! The mystery of the story really intrigued me - I enjoy seeing old photographs, and I love that this story is centered on that. As I read on, it got more and more difficult to close the book, so I could do things like sleep or fold the laundry! The ending of both storylines, and how they connect, is totally satisfying. In fact, I’m about ready for a reread! I also think this would be a great book for someone reluctant to read historical fiction, since it includes both contemporary and historical stories. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers, and was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Here are two of my favorite quotes:
“ ‘Funny thing is, I’ve been taught what love is all my life, but never realized it until this happened to me.’ His brow creased and she smiled. ‘Love is bold.’ The inquisitive bend of his brow encouraged her to continue. ‘It doesn’t cower, but expresses itself. Think of Jesus. What He did on the cross was bold. He gave His life without any guarantee that anyone would love Him back. It was daring and beautiful.’”
“She took another bite. If she was going under, it would be in a blazing glory of carbohydrates.”
