Fletch and his little brother Spence grew up in poverty with their mother and drunken step-uncle. Their fortune changes; however, when they meet the crime boss Billy King and start doing jobs for him. By the time Fletch and Spence are young men, they’re integral members of King’s gang and flourishing — even if it is on the wrong side of the law. But all that will end when Fletch begins an affair with King’s beautiful wife Susan and Spence takes the life of a rival gang member.

Gritty, compelling, and utterly exciting, “The Price” by Kerry Kaya sucks you into the world of rival gangs and organized street crime and brings it to life before your eyes. The book reads like one of the best mobster movies you’ve ever seen on the big screen. Fast paced and action packed, it’s one that’s almost impossible to put down once you get started. The characters of Fletch and Spence are endearing while the characters of gang leaders Billy King and George Bannerman are the epitome of contemptible bad guys. Weaving the seedy, crime-filled underworld with the private lives of the two brothers, “The Price” is horrifying at times, but also full of heart.

Given that “The Price” was my first gangland thriller, I wasn’t sure what to expect — or eager to start reading the book. I never thought it was a genre I would enjoy, but author Kerry Kaya proved me wrong. Although the book portrayed the extreme violence that comes with gang activity, it also had an emotional depth I didn’t expect. While I’m not sure I’ll seek out other gangland thrillers in the future, I will be watching closely for Kerry Kaya’s next release.

I absolutely love discovering new authors and Kerry Kaya is definitely a new author for me. I read the synopsis for 'The Price' and it certainly sounded like a gritty read. I wasn't wrong either because 'The Price' was definitely gritty and brutal but I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of it but more about that in a bit.
I must be honest and say that all of the characters scared the crap out of me one way and another. The ease with which the central characters turned to such brutal violence against their opponents, was especially scary. I certainly wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them but then I am a huge wimp.
Oh my flipping word, 'The Price' was an amazing read and then some. To say that reading 'The Price' became very addictive has to be the understatement of the decade, never mind the year. The book seemed to develop a hold over me from the moment I started to read the story and that hold lasted until I had read the very last word on the very last page. I felt compelled (in the nicest possible way) to keep turning those pages. I just had to keep reading to learn what fate had in store for Fletch and Spencer. The pages turned over at a furious pace. I was staggered when I looked up to check on my progress, only to discover that I had already read about half of the book. I had immersed myself into the story that deeply that I lost all track of time and I managed to shut out all other distractions, so that I could focus solely on the story. I soon raced through 'The Price'. In fact I managed to binge read the book over the course of a day, which is really good going for me.
'The Price' is superbly written. I was drawn into this book by the synopsis alone and the story between the covers just sealed the deal as it were. I am rather cross that I have left it this long to discover just how great an author Kerry is. She certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and she keeps that attention throughout the story. I find that if I binge read a book, my attention tends to wander about halfway through the book but not with 'The Price' it didn't. I had a feeling that if my attention wandered then I might miss something crucial. Kerry writes about the criminal underworld with brutal honesty and lots of grit. She pulls no punches (pardon the pun) and tells it how it is. I was gripped by the story and on the edge of my seat throughout.
Reading 'The Price' was much like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns to the story than you would find on a 'Snakes & Ladders' board. Just when you though that you could take a breather and reclaim your stomach then off the action would go again.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Price' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. Fans of Kimberly Chambers, Jessie Keane, Kerry Barnes and Heather Burnside will particularly enjoy this book. I will certainly be reading more of Kerry's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

The plot of this dark and gritty gangland thriller centres around Henry (Fletch) Fletcher and his younger brother Spencer who find themselves drawn into the world of easy money, drugs and turf wars after they start working for local Kingpin Billy King. Having escaped a violent, abusive father when they were younger just to find themselves living with their equally abusive uncle, violence was nothing new in the young men's lives. Fletcher had hoped that by working for King their lives might finally start to improve for the better. But the world that they have entered is a violent world of backstabbing, deception, betrayal and revenge. When Albie Bannerman who is the brother of George, the kingpin of a rival firm is murdered it is the catalyst for a deadly game is chess between the two factions which will result in blood shed, violence and death in both sides. George is a very nasty individual who was prepared to do everything in his power to discover what had happened to his brother no matter who gets hurt in the process.

Meanwhile, Fletch is dealing with issues of the romantic kind, he is madly in love with Billy's wife Susan despite knowing exactly what Billy would do to them both if he ever found out about their affair. Fletch has also found himself trapped by a scheming young lady called Tina who saw him as a meal ticket into a life of money and glamour and had used the oldest trick in the book to trap him. Feeling pressure from all sides, Fletch is close to breaking point, what will happen when he finally snaps? Who will still be standing when the smoke from the battle clears? How high a price is he prepared to pay to achieve his after ever after with the woman he loves?

The chapters were written from the perspectives of numerous vivid characters including Fletch,Spencer,Billy,Susan and narcissistic George. I thought that Fletch was a fantastic character, a realistic blend of fledgling gangster and vulnerable young adult who started out just trying to do his best for his mum and brother. I loved how protective he was of his family but there was also times when he came across as just as bad as his uncle and not very likeable. My knowledge of gangland bosses only extends to what I have seen in tv but from I do know, Billy acted like a typical kingpin who liked to control people using violence and intimidation and was a major hypocrite who had absolutely no respect for women including his own wife Susan. The story had quite a large cast of diverse, realistic individuals, some likeable, some not so likeable but unlike some books that have a large cast of characters this fast paced thriller was very easy to follow and understand.

The Price is a extremely well written, dark, gritty and at times harrowing insight into the world of gangs in London in the 1990s that had me hooked in and glued to my kindle from the first page. As you would expect from this type of story, there is quite a lot of violence but the descriptions and scenes weren't overly graphic or uncomfortable to read. I would love to watch a film or tv mini series about Fletch and his life of crime and I hope the author plans to revisit his again in the future. A very enjoyable, thrilling read and very very highly recommended.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I absolutely loved it. The author starts her story in the past in the first chapter, it sets the scene for what is to follow. What followed was an addictive one sitting read for me as I followed the brothers of Fletch and Spence, they work for local gangland boss Billy.

I really liked how the author focused on the relationship of the brothers rather than violence in this story, although the main focus is Fletch. He has a bit more savvy and has more front to him. Although there are mentions of violence, it wasn’t that brutal in the reading.

The brothers are loyal to each other and their Mum, things in the past were tough and it is now that things seem to be working out. Only thing with being part of a gang is that there is always another gang that wants to make a move.

The story took various turns that I found really intriguing, not just a straight forward rival gangs read, but something with much more heart and human interest to it. Getting to know the brothers through the story was a good way to make a reader kind of connect to them, but even though I really liked them there was always that air of danger about them.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story, a brilliant read that wasn’t what I expected and I found it really hard to put down. I think this book would suit various readers, especially those that want a crime read that has a slightly different angle top it. I am looking forward to reading some of the previous books by this author, and as for this book, well I would definitely recommend it.

A brilliant compulsive read. The first time for me for this author but it won't be the last. Recommended

The thing that makes or breaks it for me when it comes to this genre is the main character. In this case, I’m talking Harry “Fletch” Fletcher. The main character has to have redeeming qualities alongside his ruthless side, and Harry definitely has that. For example, in the way he cares for and protects his younger brother, Spence.

“If they touch one hair on my brother’s head, I will kill them: all of them. I’ll hunt them down and tear them limb from fucking limb.”

This book explores lots of the themes and ideas that are central to an excellent gangland thriller, including: betrayal and loyal, family, friends and enemies, brutal violence and careful planning.

This is a gritty, gripping and exciting book with a wonderfully believable cast of characters. I will definitely be reading more by this author in future.

This is ‘gangland’ and family feud at it’s best
Fletch and Spencer, 2 brothers work for baddie Billy King and are at war with another family….but trouble is stirring ( in many places ) when one of the brothers takes a liking to Billy’s wife,Susan
Add to this the ‘Mum’, the Step Uncle and the brothers Dad who is pure evil and the scene is set for a bloodbath of a story
The writing is superb, the story has you involved and almost part of the family from the beginning and it get’s nasty, very nasty as all the loose and forgotten ends come together in a horrific ending
Great characters and settings, believable dialogue and a no holds barred drama all line up to make this a really good example of a great gangland story
Loved it

If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know I love a good gangland thriller, so when Rachel's Random Resources offered me a place on this tour I didn’t hesitate.

A fast paced, violent, crime fest based around Harry Fletcher’s infatuation with the top dog’s wife, and his need to keep his brother safe from rival gangs, this lust fuelled attraction is never going to end well for them, and this plot does not disappoint.

Gritty, absorbing, dark and hard to read in places, this was a great introduction to this author, one that has made me eager to read more. This is a perfect new release for any fans of this genre and is undoubtingly an author to look out for. Highly recommended to all!

Harry Fletcher – Fletch to his friends – has spent his life surviving the tough streets of the East End. He knows working for notorious gangster Billy King is dangerous, and sleeping with Billy’s beautiful wife, Susan is deadly…but rules are meant to be broken.

Pay the price.
If Billy discovers the affair, Fletch is a dead man. But the closer he gets to Susan the more reckless Fletch becomes. And soon, Fletch realises that every one must pay the price for their actions....even him.

To say that reading this book became addictive is a huge understatement. Read in one sitting!

This is my first book by this author but definitely won't be my last! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found all of the characters to be full of life and very authentic.

The story starts with a 14 year old Harry Fletcher, known as Fletch and his 12 year old brother Spencer, or Spense. They live with their mother in her brothers house Uncle Frank. He's nothing but a bully and throws his weight around. After knicking some booze with his best mate Steve they try to sell it to the local hard man and gangland boss Billy King who gets the boys to do a dodgy job for him. The story then continues 10 years later .....

There is something about a child innocence being destroyed by men that both angers and saddens me. Its something I dreaded as a mother, my children being involved with the wrong crowd. What is clear right from the beginning that the brothers are close and look out for each other. But actions have consequences.

I really enjoyed this gritty and dark storyline about gangland crime and the murky world they live in. Its quite an eye opener to the life people involved in gangs lead. I thought it was very believable, well written and a cracking storyline that had me totally hooked from the first page. It had a similar atmosphere to The Krays, which I also enjoyed.

First novel ive read by Kerry Kaya and it turned out to be an easy gangster type read with all the hallmarks of rival gangs etc.
That being said it was a good storyline and characters were genuine some parts reminded me of previous stories but i guess that cant be avoided in this genre.
Enjoyed it overall and would recommend it for a quick read.

A story about two brothers, gangsters, family bonds and loyalty. Good characterisation, with plenty pace and tension until the end. Another good read from Kerry Kaya which fans will enjoy. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book isn't a thriller, more of a crime book that follows the life of a few gang members. To tell you the truth, i wasn't a big fan, I thought the attraction between Spencer and the wife was so contrived, they met once at the party, and then just jumped recklessly into an affair. Also, the decisions made by nearly all characters made me roll my eyes and grunt in frustration, is it because they were all gang members?

The ending was also anti- climactic.

The Price from Kerry Kaya is the first book that I have read from the author, and I realised that that this is a re-release as it was published last year. But I wasn’t disappointed as this is an amazing Gangland crime thriller that I highly recommend.
Harry Fletcher ‘Fletch ‘to his friends lives with his brother Spence and his mum. They are a close-knit family an Fletch will do anything to keep his younger brother safe. When Spence was younger there was an accident which let Spence to have slight brain damage.
Fletch wants more in life than the humdrum life he lives. So, he gets involved with the local gangster Billy King. He dreams of better things. But when he gets involved in kidnapping and killing of the gangland rivals youngest Albie Bannerman his life starts to unravel.
I thank you Boldwood books for a copy of The Price. I always enjoy book about gangland crime, but this is like no other. It had everything you want, it had fast paced action all the way through I didn’t want the book to end. I loved it. I will make sure that I seek out the other books from this author. Big fat 5 stars from me.

I have read a few of Kerry's books last year and loved them, this one is no different.

The Price is a stand alone read and will take you into the world of Harry 'Fletch' and his brother Spencer working for Gang boss Billy King, but little does Billy know Fletch is sleeping with his wife.

This is gripping throughout and really enjoyable, brilliant characters and not too gruesome. Fletch will do anything to protect his little brother Spence, but of course as the title says this comes at a Price.

A cracker of a read, Kerry is now one of my go to authors, I am really excited to see what Kerry has up her sleeve.
