The first 10% of this book was a bit boring. It got interesting at 13%, when Eden finally went to Camp Ruby Road. I liked Eden the main character, she was very nice, strong, and always wanted to explore. The only thing that annoyed me about this book was how the ending was and Miss Alma. The beginning was cobfusing and slow, and Miss Alma I found very annoying. She would always try to tell Eden what she should and should not do, she would constantly call Eden little girl. The reader understands Eden is younger than Alma there was no need to mention it so many times in the book. Alma constantly acted like Eden's house was hers, even though it was given to Eden by her parents.

This is a well written story of romance and the supernatural. It is very atmospheric of the era, and the plot captured me.

A tale that drips with intrigue and southern curiosity. Eden has in her a house in a place in the heart of in Texas. The mystery to solve is who or why was she given this place. Along for the reluctant ride is JD Callahan , rugged , singular and knows more than he’s saying. Together they unravel a story thought out to bed years ago. Will it be the undoing or signal a new beginning?

The book cover and jacket synopsis for THE HOUSE ON CAMP RUBY ROAD tell only a small part of the world Twyla Ellis has built and populated with some very intriguing characters. Set in the 1960's in a section of the US known for turmoil and protests, the story can not clearly be categorized by any one genre.
Eden's mother has died. While settling her estate, Eden learns that she now owns a hiuse but is unclear on who left her the house and why she has never known about it before. Texas in the 1960's had clear divisions of race, poverty and demographics. Ms Ellis combines all 3 to give us an eerie look at an era too volatile to explain, you had to have been there. As Eden settles into her new home and makes new friends, the feeling of the emotional climate is a character in the book. An entertaing, interesting look at a different kind of life lived just outside your door.

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites by her yet. This is a suspenseful story about a haunted house. This is a well written story that has twists and turns that not only bring the story to life but also kept it engaging. I enjoyed how the author's use of details made the story feel realistic. I also enjoyed being pulled into the story from the first word. This is a fast paced story that is full of action and haunting ghosts. Eden inherits a house but the problem is when she goes to check it out it is not only occupied by people but also ghosts. What happens next you will have to read to find out. This is worth the pick up for sure. It truly is a great haunting story that I had a hard time putting down. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book. Twyla Ellis included racial issues of the 1960s and a family mystery. I'll read the other books in this series.

Despite the creaky old house and supernatural elements, I wouldn’t describe this story as Gothic. The dialogue was hokey at times; the “good” characters so good, they blindly tolerate over-the-top evil from the villains. A bit too campy for my taste, but a certain YA audience might love it.

I was drawn to this book for it's Southern Gothic/Haunting description. I love that kind of story. This book was not at all as described but I loved it anyway! The characters were well written and the story really sucked me in.

Very engaging book set in the 1960"s. It has all the elements of that time period, as well as ghosts and a family mystery or two. I found the book to be well written and the characters enjoyable. The twists and turns and secrets that were revealed kept me glued to the page. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

This has all of the elements of a Southern Gothic novel, but the author's use of them and construction is clunky and tired. The characters could be made to seem real, but they are pretty two-dimensional , and the plot is simple and predictable. As with her other books, Ellis uses a naive narrative style that just doesn't quite work; it comes across as plain old bad writing rather than in the style of a simple storyteller, which is what I think sh e's aiming for. A strong developmental edit could have made this a pretty good book, but I doubt it'll get what it needs in time for its release date. If nothing else, the publisher should run a spell-check and have a copyeditor go over the grammar.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this title.

I love a good ghost story. I love dark fiction. This book just didn't do it for me.

It revolves around the story of Eden Devereaux, a young woman whose mother had recently passed away. Upon her mother's death, she learns of a property in East Texas that she's now the owner of. After traveling to the small town, she meets the caretaker, Miss Alma. This is billed as a southern gothic or a mystery, but honestly, it never gets spooky or dark. It stays safe the entire time. A few loud door slams and apparitions don't make for a spooky read.

Instead, I found a badly paced, drawn-out book about a stereotypical 60s small town, complete with trite dialogue that seemed far too kitschy to be real. The feud between the townies and the bottom landers was a weak plot, and every twist and turned was clearly laid out. I found the narrative to be very jumbled as well, jumping back and forth between characters with no clear transitions.

I wanted so much more from this book than I got. All in all, it was a little frustrating.

Eden was raised by a single mother in 1960’s Texas. As the story begins, we find that her mother is recently deceased, and Eden is told that she has inherited a house in The Big Thicket. It isn’t clear who has left the house to her, or why. We join Eden on her journey to find out the truth about her heritage.

This book surprised me. The writing style initially had me thinking the book would be a light romance with some spookiness sprinkled in. The book had more depth and intrigue than I imagined. The haunting moments did not overshadow the story, but contributed to solving the mystery. Overall, this was a gentle book that dealt with difficult relationships and situations.

A copy of The House on Camp Ruby Road was provided to me by NetGalley and Zimbell House Publishing for an honest review.

10 Stars if I could - one of the best reads of late. Characters and location so vivid you feel you are there, experiencing everything - and so much to experience. The author covers so much territory from privilege to racism t0 rivalry to following your heart and the strength of love. I was thrilled to discover this is the first of a trilogy and can't wait to start the next one. Highly recommended!
