This was a lot of fun to read. My friend is into birding and so I wanted to read about the dumb birds of the world ha ha and then talk to her about what I read. I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun one.

Birds are so weird. Reading and seeing pictures of all the strange birds around the world was very interesting. I actually ended up looking up many of them to see if they were really because I couldn't believe it.

The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of the Whole Stupid World was one of those instances when the humor plays the most important part in whether readers would like the bird or not. I initially found the combination of cynicism and bird "facts" endearing, but that feeling quickly wore off because of the repetitive writing and the fact that I didn't find the book funny. I enjoyed the illustrations and thought that the format worked. Regardless of my negative review of the book, I think it would make a great gift to bird and casual nature lovers, albeit to readers whose sense of humor matches Kracht's.

Matt Kracht, the author of the delightfully snarky and irreverent “The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America” is back! This time he’s aiming his field glasses at Dumb Birds of the Whole Stupid World and he’s not holding back.

You don’t have to be a birdwatcher to love this book but you do have to have the kind of sense of humor that appreciates satire and is not easily offended. That means that your Aunt Emma who loves Saturday Night Live but doesn’t know a parrot from a sparrow will more likely than not thoroughly enjoy this book. However, your Uncle Fred, the uptight stockbroker who spends every moment he’s not monitoring the Dow Jones in the woods seeking the elusive Turkish Saber-Toothed Woodpecker (To my woefully inadequate knowledge of ornithology, a non-existent species.) and who was last seen smiling (grudgingly) in 1985, will likely cut you out of his will if you buy it as a gift for him on his next birthday. If you want to stay in their good graces and on their holiday gift list, I wouldn’t advise gifting a copy to anyone who feels compelled to use words like “shucks” and “gosh darn” instead of their more profane equivalents, either.

If birds were able to sue for defamation, they’d be flocking to their local courthouse to file suit against Kracht. He’s that funny. Fortunately, for us (and for Kracht) birds can’t sue. I’m not a birder, but I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down.

Having been the innocent victim of a psycho blue jay who flew into my waist-length hair, tangling its claws in it and yanking out a hefty amount of hair when I was in college, I have been dreaming for decades of a way of getting revenge against that bird and other avian miscreants like it without actually physically hurting it or any other bird. I can stop now because unbeknownst to Matt Kracht, he has done it for me by writing this book. The pen, as one might say, is mightier than the beak.

Everything Matt Kracht touches is gold. I adored his first book and actually have it sitting on the bookshelf above my bed. Even though I was fortunate enough to read an advance copy of this book, I will definitely be adding the second one to my collection as well. Hilarious descriptions and beautiful illustrations. Very well done!

I loved the first book in this series, The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of North America. I love the calendar full of dumb birds. So obviously, I loved this book as well. A completely irreverent ode to birds and how they are just weird looking and have stupid names. It's honestly hilarious.

Great illustrations! I wanted to read this book because the title is funny. I didn’t think I would actually learn anything about birds!

I did not expect to laugh so hard while learning about birds! The illustrations are great and the irreverent tone is wonderful. The facts will definitely stick with me.

As a wildlife rehabber, so many of Kracht's observations are spot on! This book is great for everyone whether they like birds or not! I absolutely adored how he makes it possible to love birds while also completely understanding how obnoxious they can be. If you've ever been in a room full of European Starling babies screaming for food every 15 minutes you'll understand. Ya love bird, but sometime you really want to shut them up. I loved this Worldly edition of Kracht's field guide because it added birds like the Great Poopoo to my life list! I'm sorry that I must end the review here, but I've got to go in search of more dumb birds!

A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.

4.5/5 - Really, really liked it.

This book was absolutely delightful. I've been curious about birds for some time and am dabbling in bird watching, though really this consists of seeing cool birds outside and pointing them out saying: "That's a cool bird." This book taught me that, while birds are cool, they also need to be knocked down a peg or two - but of course only figuratively. The humor resonated well with my own and I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of the birds, along with the beautiful illustrations. I also appreciated that despite the tongue-in-cheek tone, there was a section about respecting wildlife. The only reason this book isn't rated higher is that I felt it got a little disjointed towards the end, which explored birds in art. This seemed out of place for me and I would have liked to just have seen more examples of birds themselves. But still - fantastic book! I'll definitely be looking out for more books by this author.

The Field Guide to Dumb Birds of the Whole Stupid World by Matt Kracht was actually the first Dumb Birds book I've read and it did not disappoint.

I'm an avid backyard birdwatcher, so this book was right up my alley. I LOVED all of the hand illustrations and the snarky descriptions...but I didn't see the need for all of the curse words.. I'm not a prude or a killjoy --- by any means... IMO a well-written, sardonic quip is much more effective to reach the masses.

Exactly what it says on the tin. Kind of silly, lots of drawings. Not particularly informative, but probably funnier if you're more into birds than I am.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars.

Birds in general are a total crack up. Not only are they stupid, but they also seemingly have not a care in the world. Which is what makes this book so genius. Our author comes at birds with a hilarious viewpoint that manages to report the science and keep it light enough to breeze thru this read without much effort. Also, I'm not sure I'll ever look at a hawk or buzzard again without thinking "murder."

This will be a great gift for any bird-watcher with a sense of humor, but maybe not grandma.

Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this ARC

The book is a sarcastic take on the usual bird books. For each bird, there is a sketch of its appearance, a funny name that the author gave it, then the real scientific and common names in smaller font not to distract you from silliness. The description is also all silly and fun. I enjoyed the book a lot.

I received a free digital copy of the book from NetGalley

More funny than strictly informative, this book was well worth a read, but might not be one that I reach for over and over. THe perfect gift for some people though!

A cute parody book about various birds of the world and their characteristics. I wouldn't have minded some more images, or maybe ones that were more finished looking but I think it is a fun way to learn some things about birds.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review, but all opinions are my own.

This humorous guide to birds of the world describes them while also making fun of their appearance, their calls, and their habits. An entertaining book for birders, but not really something I would have chosen to read otherwise.
