Annie Watson’s My Monster Moofy is a fun picture book about a little monster full of personality. As the book progresses, young readers figure out that Moofy the monster is a pet cat, full of mischief and mayhem. Banners on each page alert the readers to the type of speech being used on the page. With personifications, idioms, hyperboles, allusions, and more, My Monster Moofy is a great addition to language arts for young children. Whether reading this as a fun story or for language mechanics, this is a book that will likely find its way into libraries and classrooms.

I had to read this twice as I realized that Annie had incorporated different literary techniques to help children understand the language. The first time I read it, I was confused by the writing style as it went back and forth, but when I read it the second time, it all made sense. Definitely a great book for children. My only issue was the fact that I had to do a double take on it to fully understand the purpose of the book. I also suspect that an adult would have to read the book to these children so the different techniques are explained to them.

What a fun book! My Monster Moofy was wonderfully enjoyable when reading it to my 6 year old, but what made it even more fun was watching my 6th grader who was listening in (pretending not to, because we are way too cool for bedtime stories) get more and more interested in the literary techniques the author used.
We had a fun time looking for examples of metaphors, idioms, puns and allusions. Most of this went over my Kindergartener's head on the first read, but it really was a great book to plan a language arts lesson around!

A great book to introduce new readers to the various parts of language, such as similes, metaphor, and idioms. I appreciated that each page features a note about what part of language is being practiced in the text, as a way of helping give context and maybe assisting teachers or caretakers in better explaining the text to the reader in the moment. The story itself is kind of bland, but I recognize that it's more about the learning side of things than the actual story itself.

This picture book would be funny and charming by itself, but on each page there is a different figure of speech employed in the plot and flagged to help you recognize it. It's been quite some time since I was in an English class, so I was getting a good refresher as I read. I would recommend this to every elementary school teacher and parent I know.

This book is adorable and I loved the illustrations. My Monster Moofy is about a little girl and the monster that lives under her bed. She details all the fun they have together building forts, playing and eating snacks. The book cleverly reveals these things while using seven different figures of speech-similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, etc. so this is a really fun story that teaches kids different ways to describe things. At the end we find out exactly what kind of monster Moofy really is. I loved the big reveal because of I have 8 of these "monsters" myself. Smart, fun, and colorful. I think kids will really like this.

Author Annie Watson uses different figures of speech to tell the story of a little girl's monster named Moofy. At the top of each page explains what type of figure of speech is being used on that page, such as "My monster's name is Moofy. His ears are as pointy as tortilla chips" is a simile using 'as'. However the story is so sweet and entertaining that you can go a few pages without realizing that is what she is up to. A perfect book to introduce sentence composition while still being a fun story!

My Monster Moofy is an interesting introduction to different kinds of figures of speech. From metaphor and simile to puns and allusions, one little girl uses her "monster" to explain. While an interesting concept, the actual execution is a bit clunky, with explanations of each kind of speech saved for the end of the book, leaving a child with no choice but to try to figure it out on their own. Great for a parent or teacher who can explain these things on each page, but not quite right for one who can't.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Very unique book, and I only noticed it half way through reading it lout to my 5 years old, and went back to reading all the different literature techniques labels on each page.

There is a little banner labelling the figure of speech on each page that an older kid could learn about, and the younger kids will still enjoy guessing what the monster is.

I love this book and have already purchased this for my classroom. Not only does it have figurative language, but it also labels it in the upper corner of the page so it is easy to identify. I love the story and the way the figurative language made the story even better!

Cool concept! It's still appropriate for younger readers on its own merits as a fun story, but for older students it's a great introduction into figures of speech and literary techniques. This would be awesome for any budding author or student ready to move on past the mechanics of reading/writing and into creative expression.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
