A great cozy YA graphic novel about a young girl coming into her own. Anyone who read Mooncakes will be familiar with Xu's sense of art style, from their colour palette and lines to the way they convey emotions. Worthwhile read from a great artits.

I really enjoyed this. It was nice to read a story about magic that was inherent and normal rather than something that was hidden behind closed doors. I loved that dragons were just there! I also loved that the fantastical and the “normal” flowed seamlessly together. It was really wonderful. It was a sweet coming of age story.

*An ARC of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange of an honest review. This in no way changes my opinion of the book*
I am so sick of books that are supposed to be about strong young women learning that they are strong young women but instead link them to a boy and make it about their relationship together. UGH. I'm just over it. I didn't like any of the characters except Sage. Sophie was just so insufferable the entire book it made it so hard to keep reading.

A middle-grade graphic novel with Studio Ghibli vibes mixing Kiki's Delivery Service of a young witch trying to learn and find her way, Spirited Away with shape-shifting dragons that live in water, and the feeling of making mistakes and not being good enough.

Sophie has some magical ability and wants to attend the prestigious and famous magical academy, however, her great aunt wants her to come and learn from her and (her daughter?) Sage. Auntie (great aunt) is very strict and overly harsh on Sophie while Aunt Sage is trying to teach her some magic but Sophie is a bit hard-headed and thinks she knows more/better than everyone around her. When Sophie sneaks out to practice magic by herself at night she gets pulled into the sea and saved by a dragon who then turns into a boy (and doesn't remember who he is) and washes ashore. Something Sophie did has tangled their magics together and they have to come together to untangle them while Sophie also stresses about her magic audition to the academy.

The pacing in the book is very fast, I think that may be due to putting a lot of things in the book like trying to fit in lore, developing many characters, and trying to establish an underwater bureaucracy on top of that, but I don't think the target demographic will mind all that much. This was a cute and heartwarming comic that wraps up nicely at the end. For older audience members it may seem too tidy and sweet but its a cute read.

This adorable and gorgeous graphic novel is about a little witch that wants to do Big Magic and ends up making a BIG MISTAKE: binding a dragon into human form. Sweet and adventuresome with gorgeous illustrations.

In this story, the main character visits family and hopes to learn more about the family magic. When she is dabbling in magic that she does not understand, she interferes with the water dragon people who help the island and cannot figure out how to get the prince back to his people. The main character has to take responsibility and learn more about growing up in order to help learn magic & get the prince back to his people before things get back. A sweet & fun book. Recommended if graphic novels are popular.

While I unfortunately didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I enjoyed the last comic I read by Wendy Xu, this was still such a lovely reading experience! The art style of this was absolutely stunning and I adored our main character, Sophie. I definitely recommend checking this one out if you're looking for something that has a different spin on a beachy, summery read. So cute!

Whenever I read that something is reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, I get skeptical because Studio Ghibli’s work is just so magical; however, I had no reason to worry when it came to Tidesong. I can see why the publisher compares it to the Studio’s work–it is similarly illustrated (but with a Wendy Xu touch, which I love!), colorful, magical, and has that little extra sense of whimsy that’s hard to describe that I love in fantastical stories.

Sophie is such a great character, too! She represents so many who want to meet the expectations of those around her and whose positivity is crushing under that pressure. And Lir doesn’t seem like he will help her because he is PERFECT, but as we know, you can’t judge people without actually getting to know them.

What a fun and meaningful graphic novel–it is a favorite, and I am so excited to share it with students!

I was so excited for this, I loved Wendy Xu's art with Mooncakes and I really hope I'm able to get my hands on this someday! Unfortunately, I was not able to download this title, but I encourage others to check it out. Mooncakes was a heartwarming masterpiece and I've heard nothing but praise for Tidesong.

The illustrations were phenomenal and the story was heartwarming. I just felt like it was missing something but, I am not sure what. Cute middle grade read.

This book gave me Kiki's Delivery Service vibes. Lots of big feelings in the book. I loved the characterization of all the adult characters who also had their own struggles.

Wonderful artwork and story. Reminiscent of The Girl from the Sea. I will be recommending this for sure.

Clashing cultures and a young witch overly eager to prove herself capable. The overall thrust of the plot treads familiar ground though the details are unique. It's a perfectly serviceable read.

This title is a beautifully illustrated fantasy romp. The color scheme is gorgeous and really amplifies the drawing style. In addition to the wonder of the illustrations the story is a cute little fantasy adventure with magic and learning where you fit into the world. I loved the characters and the growth the main character went through from her selfish original behaviors to realizing she can be more than the box she thought she had to belong to. I would love to see continued adventures of her growing more into her magic as she learns on the island.

Reminding me of Kiki's Delivery Service, this novel felt heartwarming and calming, and is one that I would definitely recommend to younger readers who enjoy the world of magic.

When Sophie goes to live with her aunts to learn more about her magic and get ready for her school audition, she becomes tired of constantly doing chores and wants to practice her magic. Through an accident she meets Lir, a young dragon who can't switch from his human form and doesn't remember where he's from. Sophie will have to help Lir in order to find out how strong she really is.
What a beautiful and fun graphic novel! I enjoyed the story, the strong characters, and the gorgeous artwork. The storyline was imaginative and original and contained lessons on perseverance, believing in yourself, family, and kindness. I highly recommend this delightful, colorful story to people of all ages.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Sweet and tender. Highlights include calling elders on their BS, giant Spirited Away vibes, and healthy friendships. I enjoyed that Sophie and Lir learned how to balance their friendship. I also liked the background details/dynamics of the adults in Sophie's life, even though she didn't necessarily notice them. The art is so gorgeous.
