This review will be short because this book didn’t resonate with me, but based on the many great reviews, I seem to be in the minority in my opinion. I wouldn’t want to provide a review that discourages others from picking this up. Perhaps it was the fact that this is book #3 and I haven’t ready any of the prior books, much less anything by this author. I had difficulty connecting to the plot line or characters, which made it hard to push through.

Thank you to NetGalley + Thomas & Mercer for the ARC.

I love series that have characters that continue from book to book. Kate Marshall had been a Met detective until she discovered her boss was a serial killer and things went seriously sideways. Now, years later, she has opened her own PI firm in a coastal town where she is investigating a cold case missing persons case that keeps expanding and becoming ever more complex. Lots of twists and turns will keep readers interested and the last several chapters make for a very satisfying ending!

Another blockbuster of a book in this fantastic series.
If you haven’t read the first two books in this series then I highly recommend doing so. The first book Nine Elms still remains as one of my favourite serial killer thrillers several years on.
For me personally I think I enjoyed this book so much because I had read the two other books in order before reading this third one in the series, but saying that, you don’t need to have read the other books to enjoy this one. It gives you some back story so you’re not left in the dark to mentions of previous things.
Absolutely cannot recommend this (these) books highly enough. A must read for crime fans.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complientary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.

This is the third book in the Kate Marshall series, this could easily be read as a stand alone book, but the series is so good, I recommend reading the previous two books. I always enjoy this author's books, they are a great mix of investigative thriller and intrigue.

Kate has opened a private detective agency with her partner, Tristan; she really needs this top take off as she has put everything she has into it. Her son is coming to help out with the campground for the summer and she is looking forward to spending time with him and getting to know him as an adult. Kate is contacted by a woman whose daughter went missing 12 years prior, the police have no leads and consider the case inactive. Kate and Trstan meet with her and agree to take the case. The case goes from cold, to confusing to red hot; the police now want to take the case back and investigate as Kate and Tristan may have unearted a serial killer.

Great story, lots of twists and I enjoy Kate's story, would love to learn more about her and Tristan's lives in future books.

“What now? She had to disappear. Her body. Her computer. All DNA evidence had to vanish.”

This riveting thriller starts off with the disappearance of a journalist and just keeps adding on the suspense and victims like a snowball. The third book in the Kate Marshall series has her starting her PI business with a giant case for her to solve.

The twists and turns and trying to keep track of all that was happening in this story was an absolute blast. I read this as a standalone but will not definitely be going back and reading the others in this series. This is my first Bryndza book that I have read and am pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed his writing. I loved yet again that there were alternating chapters to give you perspectives on not just the investigators but the perpetrator perspective at the same time.

I do have to be a bit honest and say tho that it did not immediately grab my attention and I was almost 30% thru the book before I really didn’t want to put it down. I feel like the flow started to work better they were deeper into the case and more things were happening. The beginning was just a bit too slow for me and I love a slow burn. I definitely recommend this book for any readers out there who love a good thriller/mystery and can’t wait to read the next installment.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I am a huge fan of this authors writing and was really looking forward to getting stuck into his latest offering. As always he didnt disappoint, even if this didnt quite seem up to the same level as previous books.
This is the third book in the Kate Marshall series and takes Kate and Tristan back in time to investigate a cold case. They are trying to get their fledgling PI business off the ground which is proving more difficult than they anticipated.
There is an intricate multi layered plot, that in others hands might have struggled to make sense and all come together, but in Bryndza's is as mind whirlingly brilliant as it is gripping.
The location of Devon is wonderful in itself. Its a favourite place of mine anyway, but there is something extra special about the windswept beaches that add an extra layer to a crime novel. The cold case goes back to 2002, and despite being twenty years ago, will still show how far technology has come, not quite pre mobile phone and internet territory, but it created a different angle to the investigation, especially with it being a cold case already.
I am enjoying the developing relationship between Kate and Tristan. A pairing that perhaps on paper shouldnt work, but really does. You are getting to know them at the same time they are getting to know each other, which makes it feel more intimate somehow, and creates a stronger attachment to the characters.
This is book three, but can be read as a standalone, it has also left me looking forward to book four.

In the third installment of the Kate Marshall series, Kate and her assistant, Tristan, have finally opened their private investigation agency. Their first big case is about a journalist, Joanna Duncan, who has been missing for 12 years. This leads Kate and Tristan to several missing persons, many links to other people who may be involved and plot threads that need to be unraveled.

Although I enjoyed this book, I didn't find it as thrilling as the first book, Nine Elms, or as nearly exciting and engrossing as the The Girl in the Ice, the first of the Erika Foster series. Still, there were enough twists and turns in this serial killer procedural to keep me entertained and would recommend it.

Darkness Falls is the third book in the Kate Marshall series and once again Bryznda has totally nailed it and brings us another exciting story to the series. With an OMG prologue the author knows how to grab you from the start and keep you there until the very last page.

With Kate’s new detective agency, she and Tristain are asked to investigate a case from 12 years ago.I love the relationship between them. They are the perfect team. One of the many things I love about this book is that it isn’t just a police detective story. They can start to get a bit same old, so for me this is a fresh and unique storyline.

The author weaves the goings on in Kate’s personal life into the story giving some brilliant character build up. This story never gets dull and I simply couldn’t put it down. The more I read the more I wanted to know. I was interested in this case just as much as the characters wanting to know what happened all those years ago.

Honestly you wont stop reading this once you have started. It is so, so addictive.

Bryznda always guarantees a fast paced, easy, absorbing read….I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us next!

If I'm honest I'm a bit disappointed with the third Kate Marshall novel.
It was well written and kept me interested but only because I've read the previous two books and am attached to the the main characters.
I found the dream scene with Myria was spine tingling to read but the whole book just lacked something. I think Peter Conway needs to be in these books. I really did need a good baddie!

When you read a Robert Bryndza book, you always know you are going to get a good read, guaranteed. That is certainly the case with this book as well. Book 3 in the Kate Marshall series is yet another great read but can easily be read as a standalone.

Great read. It kept me hooked and had twists and turns that were both unexpected and well written. I barely put it down, just racing to figure out what was happening. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

I have read the previous books in the series and it has quickly become one of my my favourite detective series. Darkness Falls did not disappoint and I read it over the course of a day as I simply could not put it down. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Darkness Falls Robert Bryndza

5 stars

Another in the Kate Marshall series

I reviewed the second book in the series and thoroughly enjoyed it. At the end of that book, Kate is toying with the idea of setting up her own detective agency together with her young friend Tristan Hooper. At the start of this book her dream has become reality as her best friend has recently died and left Kate some money to set up the agency. However work is scarce, Tristan still has to work at the university and Kate is also running her caravan site.

When an offer of a job comes along Kate is thrilled and is determined to try and solve the case. However it is a cold case, notoriously more difficult to deal with in the murder world. Bev and her long-term partner Bill ask her to try and discover the truth about the disappearance of Bev’s daughter Joanna Duncan many years before. Joanna had been an investigative journalist and one of her targets had been Noah Huntley the local MP who had been forced to give up his seat due to Joanna’s story.

This is obviously a good place to start and as Kate is given access to all the records on the case she is able to contact and speak to many potential involved people. However the case soon becomes very complex and this is not helped when a local man goes missing who is also linked to the case.

I really enjoy the author’s style of writing, he pulls you in and gets you involved in the case and makes you really want to know what has happened. I did not guess the outcome which is always a plus point for me and I really am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book #3 in the Kate Marshall series is yet another great read from Robert.
The case involves a series of disappearances of young gay men and that of a young journalist some years ago. This book finds Kate running both her fledgling Private investigation business along with Tristan, and also managing a series of holiday caravans on the site where she lives with her son. When Kate takes a call from the daughter of Joanna Duncan who went missing 12 years ago, she agrees to investigate the case further even though the police have now decided to close it. Figuring that at the very least she may be able to bring closure to the daughter, what she discovers however is far more scandalous than they could have imagined and could have links with a series of recent murders of young gay men in the area.
As I have come to expect from Robert, the story has many twists and turns and builds up to a terrifically tense and exciting final act. And I look forward to reading more of Kate and Tristan’s investigations in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for the ARC which I received in exchange for my review.

Wow! Another fantastic thriller by this author! This is book #3 in the Kate Marshall series and this one has all the vibes of a creepy, atmospheric mystery. Young gay men are disappearing. Some are missed and others are not. Powerful businessmen and politicians are running in the same circles as the missing men but do their paths cross? Private Investigator Kate Marshall and her assistant, Tristan, are hired by the mother of a missing journalist, Joanna Duncan. When this investigating duo realize that Duncan was looking into possible connections between the the young men & the businessmen, the heat turns up and the killer feels it. This book kept me up late at night and then thinking about it the next day! Highly recommend this book & author for cases that grab your attention and hold it all the way until the end!

This is part of a series but however you can start with this one alone like a did and you would still get the characters and stories. The plot is thick on this mystery novel. Thank you for the ARC

This was the first novel by this author that I have read, and while I had no trouble following along with the writing, I did have some issues with the story.

To begin with, Kate is your typical ex-cop cliche, after a tragic event in her past she became an alcoholic (recovering now). While I enjoyed the fact that she was in recovery and took pains to stay that way (even in her dreams), I would have liked to see her be a strong character in spite of what happened to her without that added in.

Added to that, the bumbling cop routine is also getting harder and harder to deal with. Especially when I am expected to believe that Kate somehow pieced together what had happened in a month when the police failed to do so in twelve years? Do you mean to honestly tell me that not only was a vital piece of information in Johanna's case sitting right there and was missed but that the police force also couldn't connect the deaths of four young men even though there was a similar M/O? Also distracting were the chapters that had absolutely nothing to do with the story. Is Tristan under pressure? Sure. Do I need an entire chapter dedicated to him trying to re-mortgage his place? No, not really.

In fact, most of these characters felt flat and one-dimensional. I didn't see much of a personality come through, except for with Ade, whom I absolutely adored! I hope to see more of him in future books (maybe as an independent consultant or another member of the PI team?)

I think my biggest problem is that throughout most of this story, I felt like the author was holding my hand. Telling me what I should think instead of letting me draw conclusions for myself. Even when some new piece of information was thrown in, it was done in such a way that there might as well have been a giant neon sign hanging above it.

That is, until the ending. Now THAT was a twist that I didn't see coming. And that twist and the surprise ending is not only what saved this story from being a two-star read, but has also enticed me to give this author another chance.
