I loved the uniqueness of the magic in this story. The mystery was fun to follow, and the twist was unexpected

3.5 but I'm feeling generous! The portrayal of anxiety and chronic illness was actually really, really impressive and good for Olson for putting it in. I got tired of hearing how amazing a scientist the 13 year old sister was supposed to be, and I had a hard time figuring out what the time period/culture was like where we have it improper for single women and men to be alone, yet some of the verbiage was pretty contemporary. But overall? Not bad!

I appreciated the gothic feel of this mystery, and the magic system was unique. I also liked the Dorian Gray element but unfortunately it wasn't enough to sustain my interest. DNF'd at 30%.

I will still be purchasing this for our library as I feel I have readers who will enjoy this.

I really enjoyed this one. It was thrilling and I felt the idea was wholly original. A dash of Dorian Gray vibes. I definitely recommend.
