The Hotel
By: Pamela Kelley
Publisher: Dreamscape Media
Pub Date: 7/6/21
Narrator: Leslie Howard

The Whitley is a family owned hotel/resort in Nantucket. It caters to the rich and famous. Wynn Whitley founded the hotel and now his grandchildren work in the business. Nick is a chef, Lucy works in customer service, Paula is the GM and Andrea is an account. When the business is in decline Wynn makes the decision to pull Paula as the GM and put Andrea in that position from the back accounting office, unsurprisingly this causes drama in their family. To make sure Andrea is stepping into the role, Wynn hires a consultant, David; it's his job to assess where the resort is and make sure Andrea can take over.
Paula is very unhappy with the change but as she begins to interview for other GM positions at other hotels she begins to realize that the concierge desk might just be a great fit. Not only is the job less stressful but there is a coworker that she can see developing a relationship with.
We follow each grandchild as they work at the hotel and their relationships, not only with their cousins but with guests and their significant others too.
I listen to the audio of this book. Leslie Howard did the narration. She’s always enjoyable to listen to and draws you into the story. Happy Reading!

This book is exactly what I expected from a Pamela Kelley book! Short and sweet with a happy ending.

I really enjoyed the story, but I will say I did want more with some of the characters. Some of the relationships almost seemed to come out of left field based on the characters interest (even if I knew it would happen). I like that there were characters from other Pamela Kelley books that were set on Nantucket. I did also want a little more growth from Andrea, more backstory as to why she was the way she was with Paula.

I enjoy these as quick audiobooks that let you escape into a different world!

I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of this one. It was okay, but I had trouble staying interested. It’s an easy read and cute, but honestly a little slow. But good if you’re looking for a relaxing read!

The Hotel is a novel that takes place in Nantucket, a place and setting that is hard to beat. In this story The Whitley Hotel is the most famous and luxurious hotel on the island and, it has been in the family for years. Set on white pristine beaches, the hotel and surrounding cottages are about to undergo a management change. Cousin Andrea is out as general manager due to her abrasive personality and granddaughter Paula who had less of a presence because of her accounting role is now moving to the general manager position. In addition, grandfather Whitley has hired David as a consultant to aid in the transition. There is also Nick, a chef and brother to Paula as well as Bella, a Hollywood superstar who is staying at the hotel somewhat discreetly.
The chapters alternate between the characters and what started out promising and had a picture perfect setting, the one-dimensional characters and under developed yet predicable story left me disappointing. I found lots of irritating details like what an Etsy store is and what Lyme disease unnecessary and, I wished the author devote more time in plot line and character development. The audio book was read by Leslie Howard who did a fine job but, overall this story itself was disappointing.

Engaging and delightful summer read! I especially enjoyed the descriptions of Nantucket. This is everything you want in a beach read. The narrator matched the mood of the book very well.

This is a light-hearted book about a family owned and operated hotel on Nantucket that sees its share of drama and romance.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I love these books and Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard. Maybe a I’m trying to live vicariously through the characters 🙂 I love that local places and items are referenced. It makes me feel like I will know exactly where I should go when the time comes that I can actually be on island.

This was a nice light read, but I thought there were just too many characters & too many things going on. I found that I had to stop and think about who some of the characters were along the way when it jumped to a story about them. The 2 main stories about Paula/David/Grandfather/Andrea were good, but I didn’t think the other side stories were needed & they weren’t as thorough as the 2 main stories.

The narrator was perfectly suited for this book as well.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and Pamela M. Kelley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Nantucket's Whitley Hotel, the epitome of luxury, caters to the rich and famous. The resort is a family business founded by Wynn Whitley, and his children started their careers there. Now Wynn's grown grandchildren work there as well: Nick is a chef; Lucy is in customer service; Paula is an accountant; and Andrea is the general manager.

When business starts falling off because of a rival hotel, Wynn decides to make some changes. He appoints Paula general manager and moves Andrea to head of concierge services. Andrea resents the switch, becomes a bit spiteful, and starts looking for employment elsewhere.

Wynn also hires a hotel consultant named David Connolly, to help prepare Paula for her new general manager position. David - who travels widely for his job - welcomes the opportunity to work at the Whitley because his parents live on Nantucket and his mother has Alzheimer's.

Meanwhile, a famous romantic-comedy actress, who's going incognito as Bella Bryant, checks into the Whitley for a long vacation. To hide her identity the beautiful star turns her long platinum blonde hair into a brunette chin length bob, wears sunglasses, and dons a hat. Bella is in Nantucket for a much needed rest, and she gets the opportunity to relax, go fishing, tour the island, go shopping, try various restaurants, etc.

The story is mostly about family relationships, the running of a luxury hotel, and romance. All the young Whitleys are attractive and available, and they have plenty of opportunities to socialize. They go to parties, have drinks with fellow hotel employees, and meet hotel guests. Thus Nick, Lucy, Paula, and Andrea all meet at least one 'someone' in the story, and we follow along as things develop (or don't).

It's interesting to see the workings of a luxury hotel, where the guests expect (and pay for) first class service. The pool, beach, spa, bars, room service, breakfast room, restaurant, etc. all sound wonderful. The hostelry also sponsors wine tastings and food tastings, and it all seems very inviting.

This is a pleasant light story with a fairy tale vibe, reminiscent of a Hallmark movie. Perfect for a vacation read.

Thanks to Netgalley, Pamela Kelley, and ‎ Piping Plover Press for a copy of the book.

Nantucket native, Paula Whitley is stunned when her grandfather, Wynn offers her the job of managing the family owned, luxury Whitley Hotel, while relieving her cousin Andrea of her management duties. The entire Whitley family is upended with this news, along with his hiring of David, an expert management consultant to assist Paula in settling into the new position. Paula instantly dislikes David, but agrees to give it a try with his advice. Is her grandfather preparing to sell the hotel, increasing its value with these changes? Andrea takes the lesser position of concierge manager while she looks off Island for a new manager position in neighboring Boston or NYC. Nantucket Island has always been her home, does Andrea want to leave her home, family and friends for a new career?

The Hotel, the first in a new series, with its beautiful scenery descriptions, made me feel the sand beneath my toes and the sun on my face, almost like I’d gone on vacation when I finished listening to it. At times, it gave me soap opera vibes, but in a clean, steamy and fun way. With a large amount of recurring characters, I can’t wait to see how life turns out for the other Whitleys not focused on in this installment.

The Hotel was a fun summer read about a resort /Hotel on Nantucket and the lives of the staff members who work there. Many of them are family members, as it is a family run business, and with that comes the drama of running a family business. The story is told through multiple perspectives.

One thing I really appreciated is how the author laid out each character. As the family and staff work through real life dilemmas or issues, no one is made out to be the villain in the story. If someone is the cause of the problem, the author writes their perspective as well. And in it we find our own humanness. You can’t help but like all the characters and their endings to their stories.

With a little bit of a “Love Actually” feel, this was a easy summer read.

I devour books set in beautiful Nantucket. This one did not disappoint! A family hotel with all of the quirks that come along with a family run business. Definitely bring this easy light read to the beach.

I listened to The Hotel by Pamela M Kelley on audiobook and enjoyed the narration. Leslie Howard, the narrator had a very easy voice to listen to, it was clear and soothing, and she did not try to speak in voices that sounded off-key while differentiating the characters.

I love the island of Nantucket, and when I can’t get there, I love to read stories that take place there. I love that the book can easily transport me to the place and give me a summery feel even if I am reading in the dead of winter.

I have never read one of Pamela Kelley’s books, ut from what I understand they mostly take place on Nantucket, so I am sure The Hotel will not be my last one.

As for the story itself, it takes place on the island where the presages Whitley hotel is located, and the family that owns it. There is a lot of family dynamics in the book as the grandfather switches family members out of jobs and replaces them with others, but it never gets too angsty with bad feelings. I believe to show that regardless of what happens, these people are your family, and they are the ones you count on.

The author made it easy to visualize a big luxury hotel with her descriptions, as well as transporting you to the island of Nantucket. She was also very good at making your mouth water as she would describe the food that played a side part in the book. The characters in the book, and there are many of them, all had their place and brought substance to their parts of the story.

The author’s writing was good, it made sense and was easy to follow. The book was a quick read, or listen as it where. However, the book was not one in which much happened. I at times found myself drifting off thinking of other things while I listened. I would have enjoyed it much more if it had a bit more excitement to it.

This definite had Hallmark movie vibes to it…a hotel or inn, love that was not easy to come by, a great setting... It has a cozy feel to it, so if you are looking for a quick read with clean romance and summery vibes, I would definitely suggest The Hotel by Pamela M Kelley

I am enjoying this series of books set on Nantucket. I feel like if I ever get to Nantucket I know which restaurants etc that I want to visit and what I want to order. This book is pretty much a stand alone, but it does mention people from her other Nantucket books. Great book.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the Audio ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this audio book. The narrator was Leslie Howard. I have nothing against Ms. Howard, I have just come to the realization that I do not particularly like audiobooks. This romance is set in Nantucket. I found it to be highly predictable. A multi generational hotel, and grandfather hires a consultant. Drama, angst, romance. 3 stars

Loved The Hotel! Another great story set on Nantucket from Pamela M. Kelley. This is the 6th book I read from her this year and I love the subtle links she makes to some of the characters from her other books. The narrator, Leslie Howard has such a pleasant voice.

The characters are well developed and are likeable. They all have their own sub-story which are interesting and there are no loose ends in the end.

I would definitely recommend this book.

The Whitley is Nantucket's most exclusive hotel, run by its namesake family. Paula is shocked when her grandfather moves her from her behind the scenes role to being the general manager of the hotel, and not everyone in the family is happy about it. He also announces that he has hired a consultant, who will be working closely with Paula in her new role.

This book was like 3 Hallmark stories wrapped up into one. This heartwarming tale was just what I needed. Leslie Howard did a fantastic job narrating the book. I will be looking for more books by this author!

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

The Hotel is about The Whitley, Nantucket's most exclusive hotel This hotel is know for privacy and many celebrities come to The Whitley because of their reputation for protecting their privacy. The family members all take pride in working for the hotel. Most of the staff have pride in working there and have worked there for years. There are many strict rules for providing excellent service but keeping their distance from the guests. The founder of the hotel surprises everyone when he promotes his granddaughter, Paula to General Manager. She has always worked behind the scenes in Finance and Accounting. She agrees to try out the position of General Manager after being persuaded by her grandfather. Her grandfather has hired David Connolly, a consultant that is an expert in luxury hotels to help her learn the new role and also give his opinion on her suitability in the role of General Manager. Paula immediately dislikes the Consultant and finds him arrogant and bossy. This novel explores the relationships between family and hotel employees. I recommend this novel.
