DNF 20%

So this book isn’t working for me. I picked it up because it seemed like it could have some useful information on improving yourself. Unfortunately, I just can’t seem to connect to the writing or the activities she has presented, so this will sadly be a DNF.

This would be good for a younger audience (teens to young adults in college) as a way to find connections with different philosophies.

I love everything Tess writes and this one is no exception. She always gives plenty of information that’s easy to understand.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the eGalley. All opinions are my own.

I usually love Tess Whitehurst book but this is not one of my favorite.
There're good ideas and hints, i enjoyed and appreciated how she summarizes different philosophy.
I wasn't interested in some parts (ie chakras)
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Book: “The Self-Love Superpower: The Magical Art of Approving of Yourself (No Matter What),” Tess Whitehurst, Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd., 2021.

Book Review by Mary Mikawoz

Book Available September 8, 2021

I was quite interested in recognizing how self-love could be a superpower simply by approving of myself/yourself. Overall, I found the author to be quite knowledgeable about many spiritual and psychological matters. I found she has incorporated many works from previous authors that I have read and whose books I have previously reviewed. It was nice to see these concepts being congealed in such a well-developed way.

I believe the author to be quite young as her references indicate someone of a younger age. This is not a problem other than many of the cultural and societal references she discussed were not in my sphere of knowledge or influence. So, for that reason, I would recommend this book for younger or middle-aged people.

One of the best insights or lines she has is, “I am choosing to need nothing, expect nothing, and even be nothing. And so I am open to everything.” She goes on to say how liberating it is to have this kind of thought. This is in line with Buddhist philosophy of non-attachment.

Overall, she does come up with some very good ideas but again, they are ones I have read in many other books but it is nice to see it collated here as an inclusive manner.

Tess also goes over chakras which for me was just a review. It seems most books I pick up nowadays include something about the chakra system. If you are new to this, then definitely read this.

Overall, I would give this book a 4 out of 5 based on the attempt to have a cohesive nature of spiritual philosophies and ideas in one book.

The Self-Love Superpower: The Magical Art of Approving of Yourself (No Matter What) by Tess Whitehurst was provided to me as an ARC and I am happy to provide this authentic review after making my way through it. I am a fan of the author and have read most of the books she has written, so I knew I wanted to dive into this one as well. This is a book that I bounced around in and didn't follow religiously from front cover to back. It was easy to do and fit my needs perfectly! After the introduction, I picked from a list of chapters and exercises the ones that resonated with me on any particular day.
I really enjoyed the chapter "Let Your Body Be" in which the author describes some of her own struggles with diet and what has helped her move into a healthier mindset. Since this an area I have interest in, I paid attention. Tess talks with us about Intuitive Eating and the dogma of dieting, making suggestions such as books and podcasts for further exploration to the reader. I added some of these suggestions to my book que.
The action steps the author suggests do not require lots of hard to find items or take huge amounts of time. They are simple, easy to understand and even easier to perform. Who wouldn't love some kind affirmations to self and some rosewater spray? At a time when kindness counts more than ever, we should all start with ourselves first in the same way airlines ask us to apply our own oxygen mask before helping others.
This is a book I would happily gift to friends in need of some self love. Many thanks to NetGalley and Llewellyn for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Plenty of self help type books have been hit or miss for me lately, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The author gives a plethora of information in an easy to understand and interesting enough to follow format. I would suggest it for anyone looking to practice a little self love.

Whitehurst's "The Self-Love Superpower" is like having an encouraging, candid friend at hand, constantly reminding you to be gentle with yourself, to take care of yourself, and to honor yourself. The book's encouraging tone and useful exercises, interspersed with plenty of relevant, personal stories from Whitehurst's life, combine in a way that ensure that this is a book that can be dipped into over and over again, whenever you need a little reminder about the importance of loving and honoring yourself.

I am quite reflective, and don't really have a confidence issue, but this book is great, and one I'd highly recommend, especially for people lacking in confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to reflect. It's a great, conversational book with lots of tips. It's a great read!
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book explores many facets of what we call "self-love". This treasury of advices and practical instruction will surely have to offer you inspiration and care if you have some problems of inner nature in your life. Many techniques presented here are clearly presented so you can practice them with confidence. I didn't like few advices about how to approach this text. If you're on a spiritual path, if you're in the occult world, if you're into witchcraft please read this book, many valuable insights are shared.

There is a lot of very valuable information in this book, and it's presented very well. Complex topics are explained clearly and with useful examples to illustrate. The tone is kind and encouraging instead of pushy and should-y. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to check in to make sure they're taking the best care of themselves possible.

There may be concepts in here that don't apply or appeal to everyone, but, as with many things, take what you can use and leave the rest. I really appreciate the concrete exercises and action steps included in each section. So often books include ideas and suggestions but then leave you hanging as to exactly HOW one my go about it--that is definitely not the case here!

There are also many citations in the text--books, journal articles, podcasts, etc.--that can offer more specific information for anyone looking to dive deeper into a particular topic.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Oh! I am so in love with this book, and reading it makes me more in love with myself! I have been learning a lot about loving myself lately… And this book has really added to my understanding of this worthwhile, powerful process. I think that this is a subject that should be taught in elementary school because there’s so many people in the world right now who do not love themselves. This isn’t just a book about theory, there are so many wonderful, practical, simple suggestions to try right now in order to increase our loving of ourselves a little bit at a time. Highly recommend!!

Thanks to the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. Highly recommend. Especially loved the reflection to true life to humanize my feelings and relate. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
