Off late I found myself reading a lot of serial books. All have one thing in common a female badass detective. Yet most of them are unique and stand out in the thing that drives them. Katie Scott maybe just one more detective in the many books I read but she sure is SPECIAL. What sets her apart is her K9 companion & skills! This book showcases her K9 origins and I found that particularly endearing. Offcourse there were the macabre murders happing all around. The plot was SUPERB. The book started with a case partially solved and I thought there would be a twist to it at the end. The main case was dark but extremely riveting. That prologue was a masterful one and I don't think anyone would abandon the book after reading such a creepy, dark introduction. I have some questions that unfortunately were unanswered and the end felt too quick. I definitely would have loved to know more about Jeanine's friend and the relationship she shared with her colleague Serrano. Small details of the victims private lives are what make them seem authentic! But don't get me wrong I still LOVED the book and can't wait for the next one!

Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture and Jennifer Chase for the arc!

This is book 6 in the Katie Scott series and while it can be read as a stand alone, reading them order helps you see how much Katie has grown as a character. I love her and McGaven’s partnership. I’m still not entirely sold on her boyfriend Chad just because he never seems to be around much and it’s like his character is an after thought. The murders definitely kept me guessing and suspicious of absolutely everyone. It’s a fast paced read full of action and I look forward to more from the series.

This is the last in the series that’s available to read and I’m both sad that I’ve read them all but excited for book 7. This series has been so enjoyable and loved every one of them. I’ve read all six in as many days and honestly cant wait for someone I know to read them too so I can discuss them.

Great storylines, each are well plotted, researched and written really well. I love the characters stories as well as their own individual stories and especially the K9 sidekick Cisco.

And do you know what I loved the most about this series so far? I haven’t guessed a single culprit so for me it’s a series that just keeps on giving.

This was a good police procedural. Having read the books before this, and enjoyed them too, I had become fond of Katie Scott and rooted for her in every book

This is the sixth book in the series featuring Detective Katie Scott. Katie and her deputy are called out to a gruesome murder scene at a fair where they find the body of a young woman tied on the Ferris wheel with her throat cut and a ring hung by a ribbon on a nearby tree. They realise that a serial killer that has struck before is now killing on their patch. On investigation of the killer’s victims Katie discovers that they are all connected to the Military K9 section and that her own life may be in danger as Katie was part of that section. This is another gripping book in the series. Full of secrets, deceit and plenty of twists and turns, I can’t wait for the next book..
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Detective Katie Scott is called upon to investigate a series of cold case murders that have been occurring once a year. Time is up and another murder takes place before the team can get very far looking at the old cases. The murders take on a personal note for Katie when she realises there is a link with the dog handling division of the military: could she be in danger?
Pretty Broken Dolls is the 6th book to feature ex military K9 handler Katie Scott and her dog Cisco as well as her partner McGaven and uncle Wayne who is the sheriff.
Katie is suspicious of Special Agent Dane Campbell who hands over the case but seems to be holding back information and possibly even leading her into danger. There is a very uncomfortable atmosphere to the book as Katie's life is put in jeopardy a couple of times and she doesn't trust the agents in charge of the original case.
Katie is also out of sorts as her fiance has left town to follow his dream career, leaving her to wonder about their relationship. Her PTSD seems to be at risk of taking over and she feels overwhelmed several times. Cisco appears early on in the book but I was missing him in the second half!
The murders are grisly and the detail of the grotesque make up and staging of the victims is unpleasant, especially for the chapters that describe the discovery of the bodies which share the emotional response of the person who finds them. The book does include forensic details about the crime scenes and victims but these are portrayed objectively as clues.
Pretty Broken Dolls is an entertaining thriller with a strong female lead and of course Cisco!

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read Pretty broken dolls by Jennifer Chase (bk 6 in the Detective Katie Scott series) . I love this series and highly recommend it! At the beginning of the series she is dealing with PTSD and unsure of her new job as a detective working on cold cases. With the help of her partner Deputy Sean McGaven, her K-9 Cisco and a unique intuition of her own, she has become successful in solving the cases although she has a tendency to rush into situations often without thinking of the consequences.

As Katie finishes one case, another one is about to start and this time her cold case ends up hitting a bit close to home as each of the women end up having a military k-9 connection.

What I love about this series is Katie. The author has written her to be tough yet vulnerable at times.  While her PTSD still shows through, and while it still hampers her sometimes she continues to do her job. Her love of her dog Cisco, and how well they work together is a very large part of the series but I love how she has become to rely on her human partner as well. Her now fiancé, Chad is in and out of the books, and they seem to have a great relationship but in this book we saw very little of Chad.
While each book can be read as a stand alone, I would totally recommend reading the series!!!!

⭐⭐⭐

I enjoyed this one overall. It held up well as a standalone. The plot kept me engaged throughout. For the most part, the characters were likable. And the ending was okay. However, I felt like the writing and dialogue had a clunky juvenile feel to it at times. As i wrote above, I enjoyed it but I don't think I will seek out the next book in this series. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was an extremely twisted case. I’m not sure I understand the Chad aspect and the abrupt exit and mere-entrance. It was as if the author didn’t want to deal with that relationship in this book. Regardless of that I enjoyed the story. It was twisted and it finally clicked for me. I really enjoy Detective Katie Scott, but she sure does get beat up a lot.

I love the Katie Scott series and this is book six.

I have also read and reviewed:

Her Last Whisper

Flowers on her Grave

Last Girls Alive

All the books can be read as standalones.

This is just as fantastic as the other ones I have read. Katie and her team find themselves up against a ruthless killer that stages his victims.

I love how the author plots her books, we see clue after clue, being lead one way and the other. I found myself turning the pages to solve the crime too. Katie finds herself in a very dangerous situation as she comes to the conclusion that the murders may be linked to her.

Another great addition to the series.

Pretty Broken Dolls by Jennifer Chase is a highly recommended police procedural and the 6th book in the Detective Katie Scott series.

Detective Katie Scott and Deputy Sean McGaven work on cold cases so it is a surprise when they are told to help Special Agent Dane Campbell, an FBI agent working on what appears to be a serial killer who strikes every year. As they begin to look into the cold cases, they are called out to a murder scene at the fairground in Pine Valley, California. A woman is found tied to a Ferris wheel carriage with her throat cut. Like the serial killer cases they have been looking at, the victim has had lipstick and other makeup applied and their is a piece of her jewelry hanging by a ribbon in the area. As she looks into the murders it is clear that they all share something in common with Katie herself - all the victims were a part of the military K9 training unit. Katie suffers from PTSD, but she has Cisco, her German Shepard K9 partner, to help her. It becomes clear with the similarities between Katie and the victims that she may also be a target.

This is a straight forward police procedural where you follow the clues and the investigators in order to reach the conclusion. As my first Katie Scott book, I felt like Pretty Broken Dolls can be read as a stand-alone novel, even though it is the 6th book in the series. You may be missing some background into the character's personal lives and relationships, but as a procedural all the pertinent facts are presented. McGaven is a good partner and the two have an excellent working relationship. Chad, Katie's fiance, is absent for training in most of the book, so he is a lifeless character in this book for those who haven't read any of the series.

The narrative moves along at a good pace and the ending is surprising, although I did have some suspicions early on. Katie does take a few too many risky chances, but it is clearly part of her personality. This trait also keeps the sense of danger high throughout the novel. This is a good procedural that provides the facts and information you need as the case is investigated.

Number 6 in the series and Katie and Cisco are back investigating a cold case. This is a quick and easy read, has an interesting story and a good plot twist to finish off. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via NetGalley and for letting me take part in this tour. This is the 6th book in the Katie Scott series but all books can be read as standalones.

I love Detective Katie Scott. She is portrayed so realistically. She is ex-army, suffering from PTSD and still manages to have one of the best cold case solve rates. She is extremely impressive. She doesn’t let her PTSD stop her from doing her job.

I love Katie’s partner McGaven too. He always has her back and is a damn good cop. He makes an excellent partner.

The case is very disturbing and twisty. The murders were brutal and the killer was quite clearly suffering from some mental health issues. I was shocked when I finally worked out who the killer was. I didn’t see it coming until it was almost happening.

As always Jennifer did an excellent job of keeping me hooked. The pace and tension were spot on. This book is full of action and will keep you up way past your bedtime.

'Pretty Broken Dolls' by Jennifer Chase is a 6th book of the Katie Scott Series. I had fallen in love with Katie Scott after reading the 5th book and when the 6th one was released, I wanted to get a glimpse into Katie's life again.

In this story, Katie and her partner McGavin work on cold cases and this time she gets pulled in to one case that has happened recently in their small town of Pine valley. They start working on a cold case that also has a link to the present one and they realise that a serial killer who has been targeting women across the state has now killed a woman in Pine Valley too.

Katie along with Mc Gavin start investigating the earlier cases and also realise so many common points between the cases. They feel they are getting hold of clues but they end up at dead ends. Along with the events of the cases Katie also has an eerie sense of being followed and she is no more sure of whom to believe on that case. This case is very different from the earlier one with the pace and the twists in the stories, a constant sense of anticipation of what will happen next and also a nagging feel of who could be involved in the killings.

The fast pace of the story, the personal events in Katie's life, and simultaneous work on cold case as well as a current case all these make it a very interesting story. This story kept me on my edge and the thrill and mystery make it worthwhile for all lover of thriller stories.
I am looking forward to the next adventure of Katie Scott.
I thank bookouture, Netgalley and the author for providing me a review copy on my request.
