The illustrations in this book are exquisite. I love their colors, their dreamy sensibility, and the play between real and imaginary. The text left me wanting something more lyrical and polished.

This is an imaginative tale with beautiful illustrations. A young girl is bored and stuck inside her house on a gray and rainy day. She confesses her feeling to a tiny little bird that is perched on her windowsill and asks if he might transport her above the clouds to discover if the sun is shining up there. He magically swoops in and off they go.

During their flight the girl asks many questions as her inquiring mind kicks into gear. She asks: Do clouds have memories? Can they remember the dinosaurs? What are the cloud's names? Are there clouds are on other planets?... just to name a few. The two encounter a thunderstorm and the bird navigates his chatty passenger safely through it and heads back towards home. On their arrival the girl is thankful that they land safely and exclaims, "Aren't clouds WONDEROUS?"

The illustrations depict a luminous journey into the sky for daydreamers and cloud enthusiasts of all ages. Elly MacKay is a renowned paper-diorama artist and her illustrations are a joy to behold. The author has included information at the back of the book where kids can learn more scientific facts about clouds for those who want to go deeper. I love the book and highly recommend it.

Dreamy and ponderous.

I read this book with my daughters, aged 6 and 8. I found the illustrations to be gorgeous--magical and ethereal.

I didn't fall in love with the text, though. It had a ruminative, questioning feel, like a Nancy Tillman book. But IN THE CLOUDS lacked the lyrical quality of those books: it sort of just read like a listing of questions.

While reading, I thought--I wish the author had magnified the story some. When I finished, my older daughter said that "she preferred a book with a story,"

Overall, there are some gorgeous images. It might have worked better as a wordless book, like JOURNEY.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada/Tundra Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. I loved this book. I remember asking some of these questions as a child. Beautiful graphics and wonderful questions that could encourage fun and healthy discussions. If the child is old enough possibly have them read the questions and then talk about the answers. Nicely done. 5 stars

In the Clouds by Elly Mackay is a wonderfully illustrated children's book about, you guessed it, clouds! I know my almost 3 years old daughter would love this one as she loves looking at clouds. And I know that when she's older, she'll start asking the kind of questions the little girl in the book asks as well. Really enjoyed the last page where we learn more about clouds and where some questions are answered.

Thank you NetGalley for the free ebook copy in exchange of a honest review.

What child has not wondered about clouds? In this journey story, the child is taken on a journey with the aid of a bird through the clouds. Wonders and questions about cloud abound, encouraging the reader to wonder and question as well. The back matter includes information about clouds, accompanied by additional illustrations.

I loved this book. It captured the imaginations of a young kid and all the questions they may have about clouds and concocted them into a beautiful story. I loved the soft, cute illustrations!

I would have preferred the questions answered along the story instead of presenting the answers at the end but that is not a showstopper to the flow of the story. I think kids will enjoy this story and find this book useful. I recommend this book.

I was not disappointed by Elly Mackay's newest book! I fell in love with her illustrations with the Anne series and am glad to see her children's books.

With beautiful illustrations and text in the form of many questions, this book is a beautiful combination. The questions are just like those kids are asking.

I can't wait to read more of her books!

A celebration of imagination, curiosity, and clouds, this book will whisk you along up in the sky as you explore the questions we all at some point have wanted to ask. Plus each page of this book is an image you will just want to frame. Absolutely stunning.

I loved this picture book. The art is really pretty and the story about this little girl daydreaming and asking questions about the world was cute. She is especially interested in clouds and their shapes.
The answers to her questions are at the end of the book, which makes it not only a poetic story but also a scientific one. I’d recommend this for kids who are interested in nature, birds and the sky.
“For daydreamers, big and small” the book says at its beginning… I really enjoyed reading this!

Both my kiddos and I really enjoyed this whimsical children's book! The illustrations are captivating and the protagonist's meandering thoughts make for fun prose. This gorgeous book would make a great addition in a child's home library.

This book is gorgeous. The illustrations are beautiful with such a nice colour pallet and the different clouds are truly art. I loved the adventure the reader is taken on with the girl and the bird. She’s very curious with tons of comments and questions about what she’s seeing up in the sky, and I like that they’re answered at the end and that the question and answers have their own separate page. The cloud classification page is also super fun and interesting!

This is a beautifully written story about a curious girl who goes on a fantasy adventure. I enjoyed it because I have a curious daughter who like to ask lots of questions too. I think she would really love this book. The illustrations were gorgeous and I enjoyed the lessons about the clouds at the end. What a great read.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book about clouds.

I read this story with my 7 year old, and while I absolutely adored it (and the facts that came at the end to explain all the questions), his view was different. Multiple times during the book he said “why does she ask all these questions and there’s no answers?” By the end of the book, he had completely lost interest as he was disappointed throughout. I did show him the page with the questions and answers at the end, but he had moved on.

Perhaps, if there is a way to put the answers somehow on the pages of the book where the questions are, it will keep kiddos enthralled.

As an adult, I absolutely adored it. But, my kiddo (the one who is now at the age to read this himself), was less than mesmerized.

This book was awesome! I feel like the author captured every question a child has ever had about clouds and posed it within this book. The book was imaginative, sweet, and informative. The cloud guide and Q&A at the end of the book were great.

Highly recommend!

This is a peaceful, almost meditative book about clouds and the questions they inspire. The text proposes a wide range of questions about clouds, some practical and scientific, some imaginative and fanciful. Answers to the questions are not included as part of the text, so I would expect this to prompt discussion instead of being a straight read-through book. There is a section at the end with explanations of the scientific queries posed, which will save readers some Googling!

The illustrations are calm and subdued, but still beautiful. This would probably be best suited to very small group or one-on-one readings and would work especially well as a bedtime or wind-down book.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This is a lovely book about a girl discovering and dreaming what is in the clouds as she flies through the sky on the back of a bird. The illustrations are really lovely, I could stare at them all day. A lovely picture book for any child wondering what is up in the clouds.
