I read this book in one sitting because the plot pulled me in - I like stories about missing people and finding what happened to them. But to be completely honest I found the characters a bit two-dimensional and ended up skipping paragraphs because of the unnecessary details that did not add much to the story, and not very interesting characters. I wanted to like Stephanie but it was hard to feel sympathy towards her suffering. Her past and her trauma were a bit too repetitive (and she was drowning in her self-pity), and her character was weak. Do people really get PTSD from having their roommate to disappear? Perhaps. But the husband Oliver was completely unlikeable, quite appalling, which ruined the story because he is supposed to be very attractive. If he was actually quite likeable, the end would have such a better twist! The only likeable character was actually the mom and she was barely a character.

I admit it was quite unique but I think the writer made a mistake to reveal that the missing person is killed in the first chapter. It would have been better to keep it as a mystery and give some hope that she was still alive.

Lastly, it is not clear why David wanted Stephanie to look at the picture albums of Alison. A jump from Oliver to Rahul is also a bit too quick, as if the writer wants a desperate happy ending. Life does not get resolved in 10 pages! It is not clear why Naomi did what she did. I wish I learned more about her psyche. The extensive descriptions of her luxurious life with William add no charm and actually were quite boring to me..

Overall I have recently read many mystery books and this one was a bit on a weak side but it had enough mystery to keep me going. It is slightly above the average and some readers might enjoy.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy.

I have mixed feelings about What She Knew. I was quickly drawn into the story and even enjoyed the flashback parts of the narration, which often can be distracting. However, the overall execution felt a bit lackluster. The threats, which I thought would increase the tension, fell flat, and the ending was underwhelming. I was hoping for a big twist or reveal, and instead, the conclusion confirmed everything I'd already figured out.

Stephanie is just getting over the nightmares she had when her roommate went missing years ago. She is now married to her prior professor Oliver. When a researcher contacts Stephanie to look further into the disappearance of Alison, the nightmares and doubts come back. Did Alison's boyfriend really kill her? Is she really dead or still just missing? What actually happened that night?
Some of the characters fell a little flat for me. More information about their backgrounds would have helped make the characters seem more real. But I still enjoyed this book a lot. I didn't see the end coming in some ways but had my suspicions all along.

Thanks to netgalley and Inkubator Books for the arc.

I really enjoyed this. It was an easy read but I thought I knew what was happening wasn't quite right. I did want to shake some of the characters. All and all recommend.

I was given an advance copy by the publishers and net galley but the review is entirely my own

Not Rijk's best work but no means her worst.

This story was a decent enough thriller. I had identified the culprit behind the tragic death of Alison quite early on. The twist came when the motive behind her killing was revealed. And, boy, I did not see that coming at all. The novel was a bit weak in plot but the mystery and the characters were interesting enough to keep me reading to the end.

The past comes back to haunt the protagonist in this compelling mystery, forcing her to reflect on one of the most tragic events of her life. The story moved very quickly and I found myself caught out by some of the twists and turns. A great thriller but perhaps could have been improved by an extra hundred pages in just building the characters and relationships, which did seem a bit rushed.

I really enjoyed this! It was a compelling mystery and I was very invested in finding out what happened. I appreciate it when the perpetrator isn’t too obvious, but also isn’t pulled out of nowhere. It made sense, but I didn’t see it coming. I’m definitely going to check out this author’s other work.

What She Knew by Miranda Rijks is another compelling read, and I virtually flew through the pages. I know that I will be in for a treat when I pick up one of this author's novels, and this latest proved no exception.

Stephanie is reeling from the murder of her college roommate, Alison, when she becomes involved with her professor, Oliver. An unexpected pregnancy expedites their marriage, and Stephanie feels lucky to have such a beautiful family, although she is frustrated that her dreams of becoming a lawyer have been waylaid. When an investigative journalist begins to dig into the unsolved case of Alison's murder, Stephanie finds that both she and Oliver are compelled to revisit the past, and some new revelations are brought to light that may forever alter their carefully ordered lives. It seems that someone knows far more about Alison's demise than they are willing to disclose.

This is another page-turner from Miranda Rijks, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for readers next.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.

This is a quick read as in it’s not long but also because it flows nicely and you just want to keep reading. The big reveal in the end was neither. a surprise nor was it earth shattering. The ending could have used some excitement but overall it was an entertaining book. Most of the characters weren’t very well developed as they just seemed to appear without much introduction.

I appreciate the opportunity to read this book and I thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books.

I really enjoyed this book! The length of it was not very long and I finished it in one day. I felt that some of the twists were unpredictable and caught me by surprise. I really enjoy when books have a "then and now" aspect to them.

3.5 Stars

The last three books I read by this author didn't impress me but the first I read (The Visitors) did so I thought I'd give her another chance. I am really glad I did because I so enjoyed this wild ride. It is a fairly short book at just 250 pages but I flew through them. This is an incredibly easy read because the pages practically turn themselves. I know not everything in this plot is totally believable and the big reveal wasn't that much of a surprise but I loved the journey getting there and the writing just sucked me in. I hated just about every character in this book and somehow that just made me want to read more about them. What does that say about me!? I call this a butt in chair until you are done kinda book. So if you're looking for a thriller that is big on the domestic drama I think you should pick this up.

An expected goodness. The story wasn't slow in pace but slow in character development. The past portion of the story between Alison and Stephanie doesn't really give a good overall look at what actually happened. Does it add to the overall story? Perhaps 2% of it. William and Naomi's character were not fully developed. Oliver's past was never explained and seems to be glazed over. However, I stuck with the book, and suddenly around 76% of the book that's where it got good. The ending turned this slow book into something amazing and worth reading.

I received an advance copy of, What She Knew, by Miranda Rijks. This is a good thriller. Who killed Allison? Secrets, lies, and murder.

"What She Knew" by Miranda Rijks, focuses on two timeline of Stephanie "Then" and "Now". The overall plot is interesting uncovering the disappearance of Allison when they were young and the chances of finding her in the present day today. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy myself completing this book, there were too many subjects and dialogues involved in the plot so it can get distracting, and the ending was not as thrilling as expected. Would recommend for someone who starts to explore Murder/Thriller genre, but as a Thriller reader myself this was fine.

Your best mate in college went missing
, her then boyfriend arrested for the crime and a deep guilt that she reached out to you for help, but you ignored it, can create deep, lifelong scars.
Stephanie, now married, a mother of two is just getting over the nightmares when she's approached by a true crime reporter trying to find out what happened to Alison all those years ago, ripping open the healing scars and creating new ones.. what actually did happen to Alison, were the people surrounding her really what they claimed to be??

Loved this book! Its fast-paced, it provokes you to think, it proves you entirely wrong!

What She Knew by Miranda Rijks is a pretty standard domestic thriller. The plot revolves around housewife Stephanie, who is married to her former art history professor, Oliver. Almost a decade ago, when Stephanie was in college, her friend and flatmate Alison disappeared. Now, a true-crime researcher is looking into the story, and he wants to interview Stephanie. Confronting her memories about the incident unleashes a can of worms, as Stephanie starts getting threatening notes. Soon, she doesn't know who she can trust. Is Alison's killer after her now? And what really happened to Alison?

Here is a scary excerpt from the Prologue which is from the killer's perspective:

"I watched her sleep for a few moments, and then I brought the pillow down over her face and put the full weight of my body behind it. She awoke and tried to scream and struggle. And she was strong, surprisingly so for someone so slight. She kicked the duvet off the bed, but the harder she fought, the easier it was for me to stay calm. I was focused. I had a plan. I'd done my research.
...
If you would ask me whether I have any regrets, the answer is no. If you would ask me whether that first killing gave me a taste for more, the answer is no again. But if you would ask me whether I would do it again if I had to, the answer would be yes. In a heartbeat."

After I read that terrifying excerpt, I was excited to keep reading and flew through this book within a day. Overall, What She Knew is a domestic thriller with some twists, but it wasn't all that thrilling, to be honest. I will admit that I didn't see the ending coming and couldn't have predicted who the killer was. However, I did take off 1 star, because the stakes weren't that high and I didn't find the plot very exciting. It isan adequate and well-written domestic thriller, but there is nothing that elevates this book above the rest of the pack. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in July!

Another spell bounding thriller! I was immediately captivated by this book and kept so until the last page. Believable and at the same time terrifying, I really enjoyed this book.

What she knew has the potential to be a good book, but it falls very flat.

Stephanie has to be one of the most placid and naive characters ever written. The 'big twist' was very predictable and honestly, the book dragged on way too long.
