What a great story! I appreciated the diversity in characters throughout the book, particularly the inclusion of characters with physical challenges. The message is fantastic and it's fun to follow Walia and Woof as they work together as detectives to solve a case. The story is cute and the illustrations engaging, making this an excellent chapter book for early chapter book readers - you will be excited to read the next book in the series!

My daughter loved this cute detective book and connected with the main characters love of animals. I'm happy to see more diverse books I can share with my daughter and her school. My daughter gives it five stars!

Elementary mysteries are a real challenge to pull off. The author has to set appropriate stakes that will be exciting and meaningful to the child reader without becoming too frightening or putting the characters in real danger. So most of these books center on missing pets or favorite toys, and this one is no exception. But it has a couple of things going for it. First, the vocabulary is accessibly and the writing is straightforward. This means that kids just beginning to read independently will be able to follow the plot as it will assist in comprehension. Second, there is an emphasis on proper investigation techniques and not relying on assumptions. Wednesday has to learn to examine all of the evidence to get a complete picture of what happened to the cat. Lastly, Wednesday's physical limitations, while important to her character and motivations, do not define the plot or every interaction people have with her. It simply an influence on her decision making and on important people in her life. This strikes me as a series worth watching.

3.5 stars = Good+

Cute launch of a new early chapter book series starring a girl with juvenile arthritis and her service dog. The author does a nice job of weaving the mystery and the diagnosis together into an engaging story with interesting characters. I'd be happy to hand this to any new chapter book reader.

This is a good book for reluctant or younger readers. It introduces a character with a service animal, which is not often seen in kids books. I think the character goes through a good struggle and process to learn lessons. Kids would enjoy this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for the review copy of Wednesday and Woof #1 by Sherri Winston. This is a cute beginning chapter book perfect for 2nd and 3rd graders who like mysteries.

Wednesday is the nickname of Walia - a young girl with Juvenile Arthritis - and her service dog, Woof. They love mysteries, and now they have an actual mystery. Autumn, Walia's neighbor's cat, is missing. Walia fights the urge to jump to conclusions to put the clues together and find out where Autumn may have gone. The lessons in this book are relevant and important. I like Walia as a character and how much she learns and reflects throughout the story.

My students are above this level of reading, but I would definitely recommend it to reluctant readers, or younger readers !

I love this early chapter book series starring Walia (aka Wednesday) a young girl with JA (juvenile arthritis) who solves neighborhood mysteries with her trusty service dog, Woof. Highly likable characters, engaging mysteries, and short chapters with fantastic illustrations and encouraging messages to readers make this a perfect pick for emerging readers. If your readers enjoy mysteries like Cam Jensen or Nate the Great, definitely check this series out!

Wednesday and Woof is a super cute new beginner chapter book series. The story follows Walia, aka Wednesday, and her service dog, Woof, as they solve mysteries. In this first book of the series, Catastrophe, they are looking for her neighbor's cat who has gone missing. Autumn was in her favorite shady spot in the yard, but seems to have wandered off. Wednesday has juvenile arthritis and has to be careful not to overdo things or wear herself out too much. The book does a great job explaining her arthritis and why she needs a service dog. I can’t wait to buy this book for my school library. Great for animal loving, mystery solving kids!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of the book.

This is the first book in a series of chapter books by Sherri Winston and it has a lovely premise. I particularly love childrens books that involve a mystery and this was such a delight.

Walia "Wednesday" Nadir suffers from juvenile arthritis but she doesn't let that stop her.
With the help of her service dog Woof she takes us along on her investigation. Other characters that support her along the way include her friend Belinda, and her parents and grandparents. Woof steals the show, but I loved Walia's attitude!

Charming illustrations and a manageable amount of text for young readers make this an easy book to recommend..

Thanks to HarperCollins and Netgalley for the advance ebook copy of this book. The opinions in this review are my own.

This book was so cute and a great way to teach children about jumping to conclusions, being brave and persistent, and about JA (which I also grew up with, so has a special place in my heart).

I love the positivity and inclusivity at work in this book! A classic kid detective tracks down the clues while setting straight their own assumptions about others AND being up-front about their own health battles. This is a great read for elementary students, while also showing would-be detectives the importance of keeping organized information. Love it!

I received an electronic ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books through NetGalley.
Wednesday and her support dog, Woof, want to be detectives. They work together to solve cases in their neighborhood. Readers see them get a real case to solve when the neighbor's cat goes missing. Wednesday knows this cat well as it used to be her grandfather's until they had to rehome it due to her brother's allergies. She works through the steps like a grown up detective and brings in a friend to help. She does figure out where the cat is based on information she has written down in her notebook. Winston has created a humorous story for mid-elementary readers. I like the way she treats Wednesdays Juvenile Arthritis and incorporates her health into the story without it being the focal point. Readers see an overprotective dad and a mom and aunt who encourage Wednesday to challenger herself. They also see Wednesday push herself almost too far and have to rest and recover. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Thank you to NetGalley for a free eARC copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review.

Be still, my heart. This book shows Wednesday, a girl newly diagnosed with juvenile arthritis who loves to solve mysteries with her support dog, Woof. In addition to normalizing support animals for illness, this book also shows a spunky girl who doesn't let her disability define her. I was also very happy that Wednesday is a Brown girl-- she has so many unique features to her character that surely will make little girls see themselves in her.

I was diagnosed with arthritis in my early-20s and it was awful. The loss, the feeling like a glass doll on a shelf, the inability to do things I wanted... despite being much older than the target audience, I honestly wish I had read this at the beginning of my arthritis journey.

I am looking forward to more books in this series. Thank you, Sherri Winston for writing such a beautiful character into your book.

Oh this was such a cute chapter book about a little girl who has juvenile arthritis and her service dog that solve crimes. This was a really cute story and I love how they show even with a disability that Walia can still do things that other kids do, it will just take her a little longer. But she does save the day and finds where Autumn her neighbor’s cat went so that she can head out on vacation.

Thanks to HarperCollins and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.

Thanks to Harper Collins Childrens Books for the publicity review copy of WEDNESDAY AND WOOF: CATASTROPHE

A perfect introductory chapter book for emerging readers to get lost in a mystery, characters they want to be friends with, and a fun animal story. I highly recommend and will be adding this one to our own home library.

What a fun new mystery series to add to the early reader catalogue. Kids will fall in love with Wednesday, a spunky heroine who wishes that her disability did not slow her down. Kids will love to learn about a character with an animal assist dog, and will be rooting for her to find the missing kid, and prove that she can solve this mystery. It is a challenge in early readers to develop characters, and Winston excelled at this.

Cute book with a simple but entertaining mystery to solve. I was surprised by Walia (Wednesday) having juvenile arthritis, but it makes for a very good diverse book and I love that young readers with disabilities or chronic illnesses will have a fun and determined protagonist with whom they can relate. The book also touches on bullying, jumping to conclusions and prematurely judging others, and the importance of friendship. Can’t wait for this book to be published so I can see the full color illustrations.

What an adorable read! This was so fun to read with daughters. Wednesday was very relatable for my 8 year old, and her pal woof topped it off! They made the most adorable pair!
