This was one of the spookiest stories I've ever heard and the audiobook experience enhanced it. I now understand the atmosphere that held listeners when the radio programs were popular. WOW!

Thank you for the arc, unfortunately I did not finish it, I didn't connect with the characters and was able to guess the ending before it happened. Sadly this wasn't the book for me.

The premise of The List felt a little bit like Nine Lives at the start, which I loved. The plot diverged eventually, but it starts out with a character receiving a list of names, one of them their own.

This book was very hard to follow on audio as there was no separation between the POVs, so it always took me a few minutes to realize the POV had changed. I think this made it hard to connect with the story, and I felt that it was just okay.

Upon meeting Beth Belmont initially, the reader is given a strong impression that someone is targeting her and means to do her harm. While out jogging one morning, Beth finds a piece of paper with five names, her name is the third. She doesn’t know the other people or even recognize the names, so she begins to research the names and discovers the first two names on the list are dead under very suspicious circumstances.

What does this mean?
Is she next?
Who is the author of the list?
Why is she being targeted?

I had all manner of theories regarding the above questions, and I was completely wrong about all of it. This story has an excruciatingly slow build as the author takes the reader into the past, introducing us to a young girl named Ruby, who is institutionalized and is less than cooperative with her therapy. Trying to understand the relevance between Ruby and Beth was frustrating, but I when I finally connected the dots, I needed to know more. The author also adds passages from the point of view of the list’s author, which were even more convoluted and confusing. This unnamed character spends the majority of the book watching Beth, but does not reveal their identity, reasons or agenda until nearly the end. There were so many twists and turns in this story that I started to feel dizzy.

Beth, herself, is very complex and hard to relate to or get to know. She lives in a house with her boyfriend, but outside of jogging, appears to have no goals, hobbies or career aspirations. Her boyfriend encourages her to do more with her life and not waste her talent working at the cinema loading the movie reels. She suffers from nightmares on a regular basis but refuses to talk about it and does not appear to have any friends or close associates. She struck me as a very lonely and isolated character.

My Final Verdict: The audiobook was narrated by Charlotte Worthing, who did an admirable job voicing all of the different characters, which made following the timelines and knowing who was speaking easier for this reader. I may not have finished this book if I was reading the print or e-book edition.

What do you say about a book that completely builds up the story, leading the reader in one direction, but then does a complete 180 and goes somewhere the reader does not expect? I say give it a shot and prepare to be shocked and surprised at what these characters reveal about themselves, their actions, their lives and each other.

This was a dnf for me. Sorry. The cover of the book looks really good. However the characters just didn’t do it for me.

Actual rating: 3/5 stars

This was definitely not a bad thriller by any means but there were a lot of problems with it. Despite having a really interesting premise, the book started off extremely slow. It really made me feel disconnected and uninterested in the story but the characters were interesting enough that I kept going. When the plot started to pick up about halfway through, the twists became unbelievable and I also started to not care about the characters because of spoilery reasons. There were things to keep me interested at all times but at some point throughout the books the plot, pacing, and characters all suffered.

Ugh not a favorite. Not the worst book I ever read either.
But I didn't love the main character. This took me forever to get around to reading way after it was published. I kept picking it up and putting it down for something else but felt obligated to finish.

And this one had so much promise! I might still give the author another chance.

I really loved the premise of this book, but was hoping for more action and a faster pace. I think that could have upped the tension even more and earned an extra star or two.

I didn’t love this one.

The plot I found really implausible though it had enough suspense in it (until it didn’t and became predictable).

Beth as a character wasn’t my favourite not relatable so this book overall is a 3 for me.

The audio wasn't great. The main character is unlikeable the the overall story fell flat.
I was really excited for this one based on the synopsis, but was ultimately disappointed.

I just found this book ended up not being very climatic in the sense that it just became flat in the plot. Beth, the character was annoying and I didn't believe she is actually this dumb.... I found it quite slow and I knew what would happen by the end of the book.

Loved this story! If you like YA mystery, you should definitely check it out. Kind of reminds me of They Wish They Were Us.

The narrator of this audio book was perfect for this and he of your seat thriller. With several very different , characters to voice she made each distinct so I never misunderstood whose voice I was hearing. Tense and vibrant
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc

This one had a really fantastic premise, I was drawn in right away but were it ultimately fell flat was believability. In the end I just didn't believe the main character, Beth, was really able to figure out what was going on. I also didn't find it be as suspenseful as I'd like. I had hoped we would build a lot of suspense moving forward from that point but ultimately it was too slow, The writing was fine and I was surprised by the end but overall it just wasn't for me. I listened to the audio version and I felt the narrator did a good job.

This was a DNF for me. I listened to the audio and struggled through the first half not knowing what was going on. I didn't fell the narrator did well when distinguishing the different POVs. It would fit back and forth and I struggled to know who was who.

That said, I would like to actually read this. The overall plot and synopsis definitely has me interested.

DNF @ 15%,

Not it for me. I was very bored right from the beginning, the writing felt amateur. I found the writing style quite cringey, just couldn’t get into it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

This book was very interesting. The story goes back and forth in time to build the story. Character development is strong. Can you ever escape your past?

This was a pretty interesting audiobook. I enjoyed it. I think it could have been better, but it was easy to listen to on the go and not hard to follow.

I was very excited for this book after reading the description, however it fell very flat. It was much too easy to know who was behind the list; and the main character just wasn’t likable to me. Way too slow for my taste, as an avid reader of thrillers.
