Back from the Brink was the second book in the series and I did not read the first. I wish I had, though I could enjoy the story. There was some background I didn’t fully have. Still, this was a fast paced and sometimes brutal story of death, fear, and hate. I appreciated the way the author addressed the timely subjects of racism and immigration. I wish I had felt more connected to the characters. I think going back and reading the first book will help with that and I plan to grab the book and do just that!

At the point of this quote where our MC barely had any reaction- I gave up all hope of a strong MC. The pace of the mystery will keep you reading, as a high point of the book; but the characters just fell flat for me. There was a little romance, a little mystery, and a fast pace, but a story that will most likely be forgotten in a few months.

Back From the Brink set out a thrilling narrative. The characters could have been developed a bit further to pull you into the narrative a bit more, but I found it an enjoyable read overall.

The book felt a bit slow at points, but overall enjoyable. It felt like an action movie.

The story starts with a young Syrian woman on the run and heavily pregnant. She’s being chased through the woods, there are bad guys after her. Who are these guys and what are they after?

Next introduce Sheriff Nicole Cobain. She is called to the lake in the middle of the night to discover a dead body in the ice. When the boat is located from the dead man a satchel is found containing money and drugs. The satchel has a Border Patrol seal, which makes Nicole think there are some bad guys pretending to be good guys. She has to get to the bottom of this, but who can she trust?

The premise of the story seemed like a great thriller. Unfortunately, it just failed to deliver a solid plot line. It seemed like every chapter new characters were being introduced. It just felt over done. Once it became over populated I lost interest. I can see why some people like it, but it wasn’t for me.

Not terrible, but not great. It definitely had some moments that were eyeroll worthy, but ultimately it's a decently paced mystery / crime novel that will leave you feeling contented. Will I remember it in a few months? Probably not. But give it a go if you happen across it.
