A secret consortium, a bent banker, and a desperate lawyer are all that stand between Elliott Snowmaker and the inheritance of her great-uncle’s failing aircraft restoration business. Elliott doesn’t think twice about leaving her home in Toronto and making the long trip to New Mexico and Illusion Lake. Once there, she soon discovers that somebody wants her gone, and gone fast.

Staying was not the plan. But there’s something about Illusion Lake that definitely deserves her consideration. Besides, her new lawyer is hot as hell and worth a second or third look too.

Kiva Park is only at Illusion Lake for the winter. With a thriving criminal practice up north, handling the mundane chores of her dad’s general law office is a little on the dull side. But her plans for a quiet winter fly out the window when Elliott walks in the door. Elliott sets off all sorts of bells, but most disturbing is the way Kiva wants to reach out and brush Elliott’s bangs from those captivating blue eyes.

Kiva’s job is to manage Elliott’s inheritance, not investigate the strange demands of her father’s law partner. But with everyone gunning for her new client, it doesn’t take long for Kiva to figure out that there’s much more than Elliott’s inheritance and her own heart that are at risk.

This is my first book by Sheryl Wright and it probably wouldn't be my last. It isn't often that I pick up mystery romances, but once in a while I do and this turned out to be a good choice.

Airplane pilot Elliott inherits her grand-uncle's failing aircraft restoration business at Illusion Lake, but it seems that the moment she does, there are people who want her to sell and her new lawyer, Kiva tries to find out why. This is an action-packed story and mystery lovers would be thrilled to know that the plot is pretty solid. I think there were parts that were a little too descriptive though and I skimmed those but it was definitely still an enjoyable read. I probably wouldn't pick this book for the romance because it's secondary to the mystery, but I guess Elliott and Kiva are good together and the romance is a bonus.

I love when I read a book by a new to me author and I am engaged from the first page to the last. I found the plot of this romantic mystery to be inventive and complex. This was so much more than a simple whodunnit. I was caught up in the why and the how and impressed with the depth of this story. I was surprised by the twists and trust issues Elliott had to deal with from the moment she stepped into Kiva’s office. The danger she faced by those bent on taking advantage of her was ever present and as a reader, I was concerned for Elliott’s survival much less a chance at new love.

The romance was sweet and Kiva and Elliott made for a great crime-fighting duo. I loved their dry humour throughout and enjoyed watching them work together against some pretty challenging events. The story did slip into superhero moments at times but hey, it’s fiction and I loved the action and the outcome.

Count me in as a new member of the Sheryl Wright fan club. Looking forward to reading her entire backlist.

Excellent read. Simply put, it is one of the best crime books I’ve read this year. To be honest I’m having a hard time writing this mainly because ‘Illusion Lake’ offers us a very nice romance, mystery combination that takes a few twists and turns.
Main characters Elliott Snowmaker and Kiva Park are great together. Elliot comes into an inheritance from her great uncle. She travels from Tronoto to New Mexico where her great uncle has lived for years. Having spent little time with him when came north to visit with Elliott’s grandmother. Nanny was the only one who stood with, not knowing that in his way he was also standing with her. Having run into a bit of trouble with an ex, and losing her job traveling was a nice distraction for her. Little does she know her inheritance involves much more than Elliott had first thought.
Kiva Park was living and working at her fathers small law practice looking after. Her life was also in Canada and she was only here while her father recovered from an illness. Having spent time in the community when she visited her father she kind of knew how things worked. Mostly the job involved divorces and small case’s that normally lasted only a day or two. She was very surprised when Elliott came to see her, or I should say her father, to go over her great uncle's will.
The attraction they had for each other was right from the start. Little did they know that this pretty easy case would lead them to fighting a much bigger situation where people who Kiva thought she knew would turn the small town upside down. Now it’s up to Elliott and Kiva to keep themselves and the community safe. Excellent read, by an author who obviously put in some time and I imagine a fair amount of research Well done. Very, very good.

Loved this book, cracking crime/thriller I was gripped the whole way through, this is a story about the importance of water and what unscrupulous people will do to profit from this necessary resource. Yes, there is also a romance in this book which is believable and engaging but for me it was definitely wanting to know what was going to happen next that kept me reading. I really liked the main characters of Elliott and Kiva, they are written well with depth and interest. There is also a wonderful community of supporting characters especially the no nonsense Sheriff. I really enjoyed the detail of restoring old planes, not a subject I'm familiar with but fascinating. Thoroughly recommended for a gripping summer read, contains some violence. Sheryl Wright is definitely an author to follow.

With thanks to the publisher and to netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My first exposure to Sheryl Wright was Cause and Affection, which I enjoyed. But Illusion Lake is SO much more! I cheered for Elliot and Kiva, they do make a great couple. They're both intelligent and driven and very hard workers. Their chemistry was terrific! But besides the romance going on, there was a mystery to solve, and it seemed like someone was VERY determined to keep Elliot out of the picture! I was in awe of her pilot skills and enthusiasm for the antique planes, and I would love the chance to sit down with her again someday. The tree hugger in me was fascinated and appalled at the mystery surrounding the lake, and without giving anything away, I just couldn't see how they would get to the bottom of it, if you'll pardon the pun.

I don't think Elliot and Kiva would have been able to do what they did without the help of some important and well-crafted secondary characters, and if I were asked, I would be hard-pressed to pick my favourites. It was really great to see what they did for the townsfolk, and how the townsfolk gradually warmed to them.
There were so many wonderful layers to this story, and everything wrapped up in a satisfying way. A lot happens in the book and it's great because I really didn't want it to end. I was so immersed in the story and the characters that when I came to the end, I was a little sad. I want to go back. I want more, Ms. Wright! Please?

Many thanks to Sheryl Wright for crafting a world I didn't want to leave, and to Bella Books and NetGalley for the ARC in return for this gushing and unbiased review.
Brava!

“Illusion Lake” by Sheryl Wright is an action-packed mystery romance. It has a lot going on so be prepared for a meaty read.

Elliott Snowmaker is a Canadian pilot who has just landed in Illusion Lake, New Mexico. She’s inherited her great-uncle’s property which includes a small airport and the surrounding land. Her new attorney, Kiva Park, is a litigator in Toronto but is spending the winter in Illusion Lake to take over her father’s practice while he’s recovering from health issues. Kiva was hired by Elliott’s uncle to execute his will and both are concerned because as soon as Elliott gets to town, she’s accosted by certain townspeople to sell the property. Bizarre things start happening and they have to work together to figure out who can be trusted and what exactly is going on.

Like I said before, there is a lot going on with this one. Elliott has had a very bad year and it doesn’t look like inheriting a small airport is going to help matters. Honestly, I don’t want to go into great detail as I don’t want to spoil anything but let’s just say, her not selling causes a lot of problems for her. The drama and suspense are pretty high at certain times and Elliott has to endure a lot. There’s so much going on and as soon as you think it’s about to end something else is thrown on top of it. As others have said, it’s very complex with a lot of players and details.

The romance is on the back burner here. With everything going on it’s difficult for Elliott and Kiva to find time for romance but they do, in small doses. I loved the romance that we got. Luckily, I adored both of them. Elliott is vulnerable but strong and I loved seeing her evolve both in her relationship and as an individual. Kiva is brilliant and fearless and knows exactly what she wants. I also liked how Wright wrote Kiva’s body issue images. Most of the time when WLW shows body insecurities it’s with butch or bigger women and Kiva is neither of those things. I thought it was refreshing to see and seemed true to life which just added more to the overall story.

I’m going to nitpick now but it’s the reason I didn’t rate this higher. While I loved this on the whole, I did think there was just a bit too much going on. I started to feel like I was going to need a flow chart to keep up with everything. Also, Wright really likes details and I found myself skimming when she went into detail on all the planes and legal issues. I just didn’t need all the depth she went into. However, others have loved this so it may just be a me thing and that’s fine too. I just wanted to mention it so you know to expect it.

I do recommend this! Wright is an exceptional writer and this is a fun, suspenseful read.

I did not realize how interested I was in airplanes and the inner workings of airplanes. Maybe it had something to do with the mystery and romance. This mystery thriller romance with airplane insight, held my attention from the beginning. Elliott Snowmaker is a talented pilot who should not be looking for romance/relationship but somehow, potential romance creeps up on her. Kiva Park is a talented and determined attorney not looking for romance/relationship.

Elliott is trying to find her footing after one heck of a year. So much personal and professional hardship. While reading, I thought what is going to happen to her next. Kiva, from outward appearance, seems to have it all. As a pair, they work well together to figure out what the heck is going on. The lust, greed and determination by the political leadership of Illusion Lake was a tragedy. I so wanted the bad guys to get their due. When I look at airplanes, I will think more reflective about how they are built and how they are restored which in my opinion is a good thing.

Now this is an awesome book! Illusion Lake by Sheryl Wright is a romance/mystery and intrigue novel that grabbed my attention with the first paragraph, and didn’t let go ‘til the last sentence of the epilogue.
There are so many wonderful elements in this story that it’s hard to know where to start listing them. The characters, both main and secondary are extremely well-developed. Elliott Snowmaker and Kiva Park are the two main characters and the love interest in the tale. Kiva is a lawyer and Elliott becomes her client when she inherits her great uncle’s property which includes an airfield right next to Illusion Lake. There is chemistry between the two as soon as they meet, but it takes a while for the two to recognize it.

The mystery is exceptionally well-written. It is complex and serious with dire implications for Elliott. Poor Elliott! There were times that I became convinced that her middle name must be Job. If anything bad could happen to her, it did. There are multiple bad guys, and what makes the story more intriguing, it is unclear who and how many bad guys there are. The multiple crimes being committed are also quite serious. The complexity of the mystery added to a delightful romance makes this book a true page turner.

This book has my highest praise and recommendation. If you love mystery and romance, then this is the book for you.

This is my first novel by Sheryl Wright and I really enjoyed it. When this came up on Netgalley, I was completely intrigued by the blurb but knew little about aviation or the author. I'm so glad I decided to give it a go as it was full of intrigue and mystery and at points I had no idea what was what and who was who - but definitely in a good way!

I love a good blended work of fiction, and this is a great example of a mystery thriller wrapped up with a romance. Elliott and Kiva were fantastic characters, both individually and as a pair. Individually, we had poor Elliott who's had probably the roughest year imaginable and when we meet her, she's barely hanging on to what the universe keeps throwing at her. Kiva, on the other hand, seems to be floating through life and at a point where she's decided that she's going to make a change to be happier. As a pair, they are sweet, considerate and formidable in their sleuthing skills. It was a joy to watch them together and how they unpacked this book's great mystery.

This is such a great book that has an interesting mystery and then an excellent conclusion. I liked the romance between Kiva and Elliott but I think the strongest part of the novel was definitely the drama of Illusion Lake. I really liked getting to know all of our characters in the novel, and there's quite a lot of them but at no point did I feel overwhelmed by the many players. Wright did a great job of layering the story, setting and characters to build an excellent mystery novel with a very sweet romance.

I absolutely loved this story! Five stars!

This book follows the story of Elliot Snowmaker and Kiva Park. Elliot’s great uncle recently passed away and leaves everything in his will to her and Kiva is the one executing it. Little do they know that this is about to put them on a journey of crime and love.

I’m not gonna get too into the plot because I wanna keep this as spoiler free as possible due to my firm belief that the book is more enjoyable that way.

That being said all I’m gonna say is this plot is definitely one of a kind and I cannot express how much I loved the detail. It’s been a while since I’ve read such a complex story of “who, what, where, why?”.

Sheryl Wright has the amazing ability of avoiding predictably. This is such a well thought out book with an amazing execution. With lovable characters, shocking plots and heartwarming moments I will definitely be reading more from this author.

The challenges that main character, Elliot, faces are so constructed and detailed. Elliot herself is such a lovable character. The author did an amazing job at making us feel just how passionate she was about the things she loved and that included planes! Before reading this book not only did I know nothing about planes but I had not a care for them yet in this book I ate up every single detail about them. Not to mention she’s such a cute character, there’s a moment in this book where a journal entry of hers is read and I could not help but fall even more in love with her.

With everything that this character has been through I cannot express the satisfaction of her ending.

Then there’s the other main character, Kiva. While we don’t see as much of her or get as much of a feel of her character as we did Elliot, this character’s passion for the law was also compelling. As someone who wishes to study law the author again managed to impress me.

So, do I recommend? Hell yes!

Compelling writing, mysteries and lovable characters that are sure to never leave you bored, what’s not to want?

The book cover could use a bit more work though, not very appealing.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the arc in return for the honest review!

Elliott is having a terrible year she a airplane pilot who just learn that her great uncle’s have left his aircraft restoration business and small airport in town called Illusion Lake, NM.

Kiva is a litigator and is filling in at her fathers small legal practice while he recovers from some health issues.

Elliott and Kiva meet to settle her uncle estate when they learn that not everything is what it seems in this town. As they work together someone wants them out of the way and is very interested in her Uncle business and they goes to great lengths to get what they want and they don’t know who to trust especially when they use Elliott past against her.

Kiva and Elliott have great chemistry and their romance is slow build but that’s not really the focus of the story it’s more about why this small town have become so corrupt that they don’t care who they hurt. I enjoy learning about airplanes and the law.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Illusion Lake is a page-turning mystery/thriller/romance. Elliott Snowmaker is an airplane pilot who has had a terrible year. Practically broke Elliott arrives in Illusion Lake, NM after being named the heir to her great-uncle's aircraft restoration business and small airport. Kiva Park is a litigator from Toronto, Canada and is filling in at her fathers small legal practice while he recovers from some health issues. She meets with Elliott to discharge the terms of the older Snowmaker's will.

Things aren't all what they seem. Pressure is instantly brought to settle the estate quickly and for little money. Together Kiva and Elliott try and figure out why there is so much interest in the small airfield and land attached to it. It is hard to know who to turn to when authorities use Elliott's background against her making her seem unstable. I don't want to give away plot points but the people with power are willing to go to great lengths to get what they want.

Both Kiva and Elliott are great characters. I like that both are knowledgeable and capable in their fields. The story is surprisingly complex. I also wasn't expecting the level of corruption in a small town in NM. The romance is important but only a small part of the story and told with a slow build. I wish there were a few more stolen moments together for Kiva and Elliott. I love legal dramas and the author is more realistic than some. Even though there is solid proof of something it doesn't mean the person is instantly cleared or no longer a suspect.

I think anyone who enjoys mystery/thrillers with a sapphic romance will enjoy this novel. They may also learn a little more about airplanes and the law then they need to know. On a coincidental personal note the final scene takes place on Fourth of July and I happened to read the book on the very same day. Thank you to NetGalley and Bella Books for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
