I didn’t read the first book in thIs series, but it was easy enough to catch up with all the characters. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you should like this one. It was a bit too “cozy” for my taste with lots of cutesy phrases. The mystery was interesting though, I liked the characters and overall I liked the storyline.
I received an ARC from the publisher and netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Although this was the second book in the series, everything was explained easily so it didn’t matter that I hadn’t read the first one.
Most of the cozy mysteries are a bit too cutesy for me, but I did enjoy this one. The characters are believable and likeable which for me is always an important requirement in light fiction. The setting in Wisconsin at the depth of winter was quite different from most of these books - the harsh weather was almost a character in its own right.
Rain, a librarian keeps the library going to support the community in winter. She gets embroiled in a murder mystery when one of the visitors to the library is brutally knifed in his ice fishing hut but somehow, the books he had borrowed end up in the return box after he was killed. Can Rain, solve the mystery of who committed the murder? What if the killer was her best friend’s husband who was seen leaving the fishing hut around the time of the murder?
This book gets the tick in the box for being well a written and enjoyable light mystery. I would certainly read more by this author.

This is only the second book in Holly Danvers new series. I came across the first one an so enjoyed it that I was glad that NetGalley and the publisher were kind enough to grant my request to read the second one in the series. This books develops the characters introduced in the first book as well as giving additional vivid descriptions about winters in Wisconsin

A new wood stove, a cozy log cabin, and shelves full of books are all Rain Wilmot needs to make it through the Wisconsin winter, now that she’s made her family’s Lofty Pines library her year-round home. But then local man, Wallace Benson, is found dead during the annual Ice Fishing Jamboree. After Benson’s body is found in his ice shanty, Rain remembers that she recently saw the victim in her library, borrowing a few cookbooks to prepare for the fishing tournament’s communal “chili dump.” She later finds these same books returned to the library’s drop box, with an enigmatic note from Benson to Rain. As Rain seeks to understand the message, the prime suspect becomes Rain’s friend Nick, who was the last person to see Wallace alive and who returned to the Jamboree with a nasty cut on his hand. The knife found in his tackle box only makes Nick’s troubles worse. But Rain keeps keeps looking for other suspects. With the help of her friends Julia and Jace, Rain sets out to find the real culprit and clear Nick’s name. But can her sleuthing skills protect her from a killer?

This is the second book in a relatively new cozy mystery series. I've read the first one and to be honest, I enjoyed the first one much more than this one. I found this one far too predictable (even by cozy mystery standards). It was a little too obvious as to who the killer was. As well, there were far too many cozy mystery cliches in this book (I'd have to give away too many spoilers to list them though).

That being said, if you are a fan of cozy mysteries and liked the setting and characters of the first book, you'll probably like this one as well. I'm not sure that I'll continue with this series myself.

I loved her first book and there's no surprise me I love her second one even better. I love the ambiance and setting as well as Lovable characters.

This is the second Lakeside Library Mystery. I love this series!

Rain Wilmot has decided to extend her stay at her family's lakeside cabin and is experiencing her first winter there. She's kept the library open for the winter, too. Fortunately her best friend and next door neighbor, Julia has decided to turn her summer weekend cabin into a year round home, too.

It's time for the annual Ice Fishing Jamboree and communal chili dump. Everyone's getting ready out on the ice when local resident Wallace Benson, is found dead in his ice shanty. Julia's husband had an argument with Benson shortly before his death so he's the main suspect. Julia and Rain are sure he has been framed and are determined to prove it.

As a librarian (and happy reader) I do enjoy a good book about books, and usually, when my bookish mood strikes I don’t hesitate in turning to books with librarians, libraries, bookshops, booksellers, editors, writers, you name it, in their pages. So naturally, when I saw Long Overdue at the Lakeside Library I didn’t hesitate in taking a look.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book was discovering the cozy mysteries genre. So this is a good depiction if you plan to start reading them too.

The book continues the story about Rain Wilmot and her work at her family’s library. In the days before a major community event involving chili dump and an annual Ice Fishing Jamboree, Rain receives Wallace Benson, a patron that was seeking recipes for the event. After a warm conversation, Wallace leaves the library and that’s the last time Rain sees him alive. This alone was not as bad news as Rain thought: one of her closest friends might be involved.

Overall I enjoyed it a lot, although since this is the second book and I haven’t read the first one, naturally I missed a lot of information essential for getting to know more about the characters and their relationships. However, it wasn’t that big of a problem. Rain and her mother are definitely a librarian type, I’m very interested in Rain’s past and of course, future romantic interest, how her detective skills develop, what is going to happen with the library, Julia’s personality, and her relationship with Rain and so on. I look forward to reading more about this series, so this is a nice go for bookish readers like me!

Enjoyable enough read - great idea for a series but I found the pace a bit slow. There is lots of dialogue, some of which is repetitive.
And a lot of people talking about the weather.
Interesting mystery with a satisfying conclusion. Probably won't return to the series as I didn't warm to Rain as much as I would have hoped.
Loved the book cover

A cozy little mystery! Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this ARC
Rain has decided to make Lofty Pines her year-round home. Her and her best friend Julia are librarians who have just decided to keep the library open year round, despite the brutal winters. Holly Danvers keeps her characters and this story readable with the perfect mix of Wisconsin beauty and Christmas cheer!

This is the second Rain Wilmot mystery I've read, and it did not disappoint me! I like the way Ms. Danvers writes. If you like mysteries set in a small, quaint town with likeable characters and two amateur sleuths, then you'll love this book. I highly recommend this book to other cozy mystery readers.

This series has all the makings of a charming cozy mystery— small town, quaint library, close-knit cast of characters— but unfortunately, it just doesn’t come together for me. While there is backstory hinted at at times, Rain’s character feels underdeveloped. The town is also cliquey and insulated, which makes me, the reader feel like an unwelcome outsider. The mystery was intriguing enough, but the characters don’t make me want to return for more in the series.

Ice fishing in the Northland can be murder.
Mini library co-workers and amateur sleuths find themselves way too close to an incomprehensible murder. The publisher's blurb is a really good hook, and this fine whodunit is served up with a hint or two of romance for the widowed main character. The characters are interesting and engaging while the plot has just enough twists and red herrings. Loved it!
P.S. I live in Wisconsin (Admirals Hockey), just like the story.

Rain Wilmot is a young widow who lives year round in a cabin in Lofty Pines, Wisconsin and runs the local library. She's visited by a man who's looking for a cookbook so he can enter the annual "chili dump" along with the Ice Fishing Jamboree. He's happy he's got the prime spot, right in front of the library's view, and is determined to win. But Rain's friend Nick is upset that the man, Wallace Benson 'stole' his spot and complains about it to anyone who will listen. Then Benson is found murdered in his ice shanty, and since Nick is the last one to see him alive, he's the main suspect. Because of this, his police officer brother-in-law Jace can't investigate, so the two need to sit on the sidelines.

But Nick's wife Julia insists that Rain investigate, since she's solved one murder before, and the two women find themselves knee-deep in both snow and looking for a killer who might just be looking for them...

This is the second book in the series and I have to say that I haven't read the first, although I have read Ms. Danvers's other series and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it didn't make any difference as it was easy to follow the storyline and the characters.

What bothered me was all the talk of snow and snowstorms. It was constant. Never-ending. Right there on the page in nearly every paragraph. We get the fact that Wisconsin gets a lot of snow and a lot of snowstorms. But we have the weather channel if we want to know about it. It was completely distracting to me, and made me lose interest in the story quickly.

THIS IS HIDDEN IN A SPOILER ON GOODREADS
I also started to lose interest at the first hint of a possible love triangle. I abhor them. Put it this way: if a man were stringing along two women, you'd think him a dog, or worse. So why is it okay when a woman is stringing along two men? Now, there wasn't any of that in this story, thank you very much. But there was a very strong hint of it just the same, and one that we're bound to see in the next book. Please no. Just no. END OF SPOILER

Other than that, I guessed who the murderer was, but the story line kept it well hidden, which is a good thing. In the end, the climax scene was done very well, with no unbelievable scenarios, so I did enjoy that. All in all, this was a nice cozy that can be read in one evening.

I received an advance copy of the book Long Overdue at the Lakeside Library from NetGalley via Crooked Lane Books.
It is such an enjoyable story. I like the plot twist, I didn’t figure who the murderer was until it was revealed.

The story line was truly engaging, although there were dialogues from Rain that I feel were unnecessary but overall the book is a good read.

Very simplistic plot about the owner of a library who discovers a murder nearly outside where she lives and gets involved trying to solve it to help her friends. Not too complex if you just want an easy book to pick up and put down at various times. The descriptions of the area where they lived could have been better and the romance part could have been highlighted more. Slightly disappointing overall and no twist at the end.

3.25 stars, rounding down.

This book put the “cozy” in cozy mystery and I’m a sucker for books set in my home state of Wisconsin. Rain and her best friend Julia are librarians who have just decided to keep the library open year round, despite the brutal winters. Shortly after Rain arrives at the lake for the annual ice fishing competition, Wallace Benson is found dead. Immediately, his wife Tina blames Julia’s husband, Nick. The police end up finding enough evidence to arrest Nick, and it’s up to Julia and Rain to clear Nick’s name.

Even though I was pretty sure who the killer was before the murder even occurred, I still felt like the sleuthing was interesting enough for me to remain skeptical right until the very end. Many of the characters were unreliable, and I liked that aspect. It was also nice that I was able to read and follow this book not having read the first one in the series. I feel like I’m rating this one a little low considering I didn’t find anything *wrong* with the book, but I also don’t think it’s of the caliber I would normally give a 4 star read.

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.

I enjoyed reading this second book in the Lakeside Library mystery series.
I can relate to Rain. If only we all could start over in a vacation town.

The mystery is well written and there was enough red herrings thrown in that I did not know who it was until the end which is how I like a cozy mystery to be. I like to keep guessing.

I did like introduction of Mr. Wright aka Right. :) I feel Rain has more chemistry with him at this early stage.

I am looking forward to next book in the series and give this 5 stars.

This is an honest review on book provided to me as an ARC from NetGalley.

I enjoy a good library or reading club mystery. Long Overdue at the Lakeside Library by Holly Danvers is a solid read. The only thing I am finding hard to believe in these cozy mystery stories is that the main characters are always doing more detective work than the actual detectives. I know that is the premise of cozy mysteries, but sometimes it is hard to wrap my head around these types of "not real life" scenarios.

Overall, the plot was good, and the book was enjoyable for a day of escape and a fast read. I would give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
