This one wasn't for me. Nothing bad to say in terms of premise etc, just not to my taste. Struggled with the audiobook element too

This audiobook did not resonate with me in the way that I thought it would. I think the content was just not right for me at the time.

The book is based around the author's art so listening to the audiobook, as I did, it feels a bit like you're missing something vital. Nevertheless, this was a beautiful and interesting listen. A call to arms. A paean of self-discovery. And a reminder that no matter where you are in the world you're not alone.

I didn't finish this book. It may have been the narrator, but it felt like I was listening to a teenager complaining about a lot of things. I do feel this is a book that will be best enjoyed in digital or print format to fully appreciate the author's art. I have followed the author on Instagram and find the posts beautiful.

I have enjoyed Shafi’s poetry before and was not disappointed in Shafi’s narrative in Small, Broke , and Kind of Dirty. The audio is narrated by Tuchai Redvers who keeps with the conversation style of Shafi’s writing which I appreciated.

Like Shafi’s poetry, the themes of mental illness, sexuality, cultural dynamics, feminism and allyship find their way into these vignettes. Shafi makes you think about some big and hot topics like misogyny, women’s rights, LGBTQIA2S+ and the myths around what it means to be a Muslim. Whether you agree or not with Shafi’s thoughts, there is definitely clarity in how she feels and thinks about things.

The main message in all of it, I think, is that it is ok to not have it all together, to not be perfect, to not be what is expected. A huge thank you to NetGalley for the audio copy. I would encourage readers, if you can, to check out Shafi’s art. The audio does a great job at describing the artwork in the book, but I’m glad that I have a hard copy too, because it adds something special to Shafi’s work.

This is a 3.5 star for me.

This book is somewhat of a call to action to prompt the younger generation to do better than the one before them. The book is very personal and relatable and didn't have too much of a "preachy" vibe. Thank you to NetGalley and Book*hug Press for a copy of this book for an honest review.

I listened and finished this audiobook in one sitting. The whole book felt like a deep conversation I was having with friends with the author projecting her thoughts and opinions but in an open way, not forcing their opinion but leaving it open for interpretation.
The print book has illustrations and the narration of the audiobook included good visual descriptions of the images.
As I'm in my early 30s I could relate to many points raised however if I was to recommend it would be more geared towards my younger self whom was still trying to understand and form opinions of the world, with this I was more just agreeing and simply nodding along all the way through!
I had never heard if Hana Shafi prior to this but Ill be keeping an eye out for her work going forwards.

I found the politics and environmental issues interesting and balanced. The rest of the book is really written as a bit of a wake up call to younger people to provoke a reaction or opinion. The author was having a bit of a personal rant at times which I don’t have a problem with, I too feel strongly about certain issues however healthy debate and balance should be written, with the author then giving their own viewpoint. Not really my sort of writing style. The narrator was that American voice young people just love, thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook in return for an honest review.

Wow-this was such a heart felt, honest, and strong illustration of finding comfort in who we are and what we stand for. I was so engrossed by Hana's insights, straightforwardness and unwillingness to gloss over hard things. While listening, I sought out her Instagram @frizzkidart to be able to see her work. The verbalization of her artwork in the audio is very good but it does not compare to witnessing it firsthand . She is using her talents to speak for those who have not yet found their voices or who feel alone, and reading/listening to her book is an experience that will sit with you for long after you finish.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this gifted copy

Just finished this audiobook and really enjoyed it! It felt like I was talking to an old friend and reminiscing about our good and bad times. Shafi is very personable, even when talking about less appetizing things (cue the IBS rant) and covers a wide range of topics from mental health, misogyny, body positivity, chronic illness, politics, and more. Very inclusive of ability, race, gender identity and much more.
