I am not Mennonite, although I have family members who are. I was interested in this book mainly to see how Christianity spread in Indonesia. As a very topic-specific book, one of which is clearly the only one available, I really have no choice but to give it 5 stars. It is very readable and it includes some pictures as well as countless footnotes.
If attending the Mennonite World Conference in 2022, I would find this book invaluable.

It also included a brief history of Indonesia, some tourist tips (especially regarding places to see if attending the World Conference and you are interested in historic Mennonite sites), and even some recipes at the back.

The main parts of the book, however, are on the various people and place of how Mennonite-Anabaptism spread. It was very interesting.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

As someone who is originally from the same area as the author, interactions with various anabaptist groups (mainly Amish and Mennonite) is common and it was interesting to see the Mennonite in a least expected country and a culture different from what most may think. Roth points out that at least the Mennonites have branched out from their typical locales of Germany, Holland, The American Midwest, and parts of Latin America to places as exotic as Indonesia. Readers will like the historical overview given and the state of the Mennonite community in that country. Even the appendices in the end are enjoyable with a recipe list and an FAQ for those who may wish to travel to Indonesia. I would recommend this to fellow historians, ministers, missionaries, and anyone else interested in the Mennonites and other anabaptist groups.
