1000 Storms had such a bizarre and confusing storyline. The art style really lent itself to creating a sinister and disturbing atmosphere. I was thoroughly discomfited by some of the imagery and confused as to the plot's progression. I do not think this graphic novel was for me.

This book has absolutely beautiful illustrations. I would have loved to have had more backstory, but Lisa is such a good character. You can't help but feel for her. It's both fascinating and devastating.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Art style? 10/10

Aesthetic? This my vibe.

Story? Ehhhhh-- thin and disjointed.

Sexualization of children? That's gonna be a no from me, dawg.

I'm honestly not sure who the ideal audience is for this. The dialogue is very simplistic, the characters act even younger than they appear on page, and yet in the course of this very short read the main character: has a full frontal nude, has attention drawn to her breasts and gives a younger child permission to grope them in public, and on her second kiss in the middle of a dangerous situation her hand is depicted as going straight down the boy's pants.

I'm no prude, but it feels like there's a line between innocent/tasteful portrayal of children being comfortable in their sexuality, and voyeurism for the reader. (eg What angles they're viewed from, where the image is cropped, things shown in profile or shadow, etc).

And this was all very uncomfortably on the voyeurism side of the line.

4 stars for the art, but 0 stars for the everything else.

Mm.
I'm not sure how to review this. The story itself was so weird. I don't even know what to say haha.
The pictures where done beautifully though I like that sort of art.
I enjoyed this all in all. I couldn't look away. So that's always a plus. It is a odd comic but it's still a pretty good one.

Interesting but disjointed look at a young teenaged girl who is accused by others in her village – and even within her step family – of being a witch. Not only are many jumps in the narrative time too able to trip up our understanding (even if not for too long) but there are some weird illogical changes in the design, as well, with painted qualities being dumped for something much more cartoonish and vice versa. Also, despite the hard work in getting it all to page, I can't really say I'm enamoured of it when it boils down to being about Daddy Issues, yet again. Yawn. (Also, cringe at the underaged pawing going on.) Three stars, slightly reluctantly given, but you gotta admire some of the creative craft.

I love Sandovals art style, it's such a mesmerizing combination of beautiful and creepy. The fantastical elements are gorgeous. The style of illustration changes every couple of pages and I'm not sure if that's just still unfinished (it's an entirely different medium) or if that's part of the story.
What I dislike is the weird sexualization of the children, there's a full page nude of the main girl or example.
I loved 'Watersknakes' and realised pretty late that this is connected to it. Which leads me to my overall problem: I was lost. I didn't know where the story was going, what was going on, why stuff was going on. Sadly the atmosphere could not wow me enough to overlook my critic points.

I have mixed feelings about this one. At times, the art is beautiful, but at times it's grotesque (and not just when it's depicting monsters/demons). I'm aware this is a stylistic choice, but it didn't gel with my reading tastes very well. Besides the art, I will say the story wasn't always the most compelling--it vacillated between somewhat explained high mythology and hurried opaqueness. It's YA in theory, but in practice it seems to be for older readers. And my main hangup is the way Lisa's blossoming sexuality is handled: from a child asking (and receiving consent) to fondle her breasts to a shocking full-page spread of the teenaged Lisa fully nude early on, there were parts that made me incredibly uncomfortable. Lisa's frequent passivity added to this discomfort...

This was.... unique. The artwork is beautiful, the creature design is fantastic. The story?.... It just didn't make sense to me. None of it made any sense. The pacing was off for what little there was. Ultimately, I don't regret reading it, but it isn't something I would recommend to anyone.

What a bazaar, but artistically beautiful book! I am torn between completely enthralled and slightly creeped out.

Lisa is a strange girl, who many presume to be a witch. She finds a way into an alternate place through a tree. She steals the bones of a carcass, which spurs some demons to descend on the world – when some kids who followed her release them. All hell, literally, breaks lose.

Thank you Netgalley and Diamond Book Distributors/Magnetic Press for this ARC. I think my secondary kids would really enjoy this book – and Watersnakes, once it arrives. The art is amazing – I especially love the water colors.

First, thanks Tony Sandoval, Magnetic Press and Netgalley for this ARC.

This book has some beautiful art. It's a dark fairytale, with some disturbing imagery. Not for kids, though at first it may seem like it is.
