I gotta say I loved this even more than book 1! The world building, the characters, the plot and the pacing was perfect!

The chemistry for me was everything and the steam factor? Holy hotness!!! Katee's writing makes it so easy to completely consume yourself in the world she's built and it was unputdownable!

Electric Idol was perfection!

Wowsers! This book was unputdownable! I’m thoroughly enjoying this new modern spin on Olympus and mythological characters, and most especially this couple with its irredeemable killer hero and good girl heroine in a marriage of convenience….. you know this is going to be good.

Our hero is not only the son of the current Aphrodite but also her “fixer” and she has demanded he kill her nemesis Demeter’s daughter Psyche. Psyche is smart and she knows there is a hit on her so she makes a deal with her would be killer to be his wife to negative the kill order. This suits our lusting hero just fine- but will this move save her, or ensure her doom?

I am utter trash for this couple. TRASH! The hero is a stone cold killer but the heroine unleashes this human side that he never knew he had and he believes she’s too good for him but also will never let her go. TRASH! Their chemistry is insane 🔥🔥🔥 and it’s the perfect spicy read with some great world building! This book also leaves off in a way that has you craving the next one! Gimme more!

Okay, my favorite thing about this series is the world (or in this case, City) of Olympus! I was fascinated by it in Neon Gods and thy continued through this book! With each new bit of world building given to me I’m consumed more and more with this unique concept and twist on Greek mythology! I love it!!

This book follows the story and Psyche and Eros! I ended up adoring these two so much right off the bat and ate up every little change of heart and softening of edges that takes place!

Read if you like:
-Hurt/comfort trope
-Beauty and a monster trope
-forced proximity/fake marriage vibes
-lots of steam 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
-Gods of Olympus reimagining
-Social media influencer MC
-Plus size rep and discussions 👏🏻

Huge thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for sending me this E-Arc!!

Heat Factor: There’s a lot of sex, but I wouldn’t call it spicy

Character Chemistry: If you say so

Plot: Eros is supposed to kill Psyche, and marries her instead

Overall: Decidedly meh

I thought the first Dark Olympus book, Neon Gods, was pretty good. My main quibble was that I wanted more from the worldbuilding—but I had high hopes for things to be more fleshed out as the series progressed. Unfortunately, I was disappointed on that front. The world in Electric Idol remains nebulous. In addition, I found the writing repetitive in the extreme.

These are the keywords of this review: repetitive and vague.

Electric Idol, in one dialogue:

Eros: I am a mOnStEr!

Psyche: We all gotta play the game in Olympus, Eros.

Eros: Not you, you and your sisters are special. So special.

Psyche: I can’t trust anyone except my family.

Eros: I will keep you safe.

Psyche: I can’t let myself get too close to him, because his feelings aren’t real.

Eros: If I were good, I would let her good, but I’m selfish and want her to myself forever because I’m a monster.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I was utterly bored by Eros and his guilt about being a monster. Telling me he has blood on his hands a million times, but never actually showing him doing something monstrous? Sorry, I don’t believe it. I admit that morality chain is not my favorite, but if you’re going to be bad, lean in!

Eros and Psyche talk a lot about the “games” played in Olympus, but I still don’t have a handle on how the city is run or how its magic or politics or economy works. Like, the games seem to be all about social media and getting “the people” on your side? But none of the characters actually seem to give a shit about the population of Olympus? And maybe Aphrodite is mad that Psyche is a more successful influencer than she is? That seems awfully petty, though I guess all the gods in Greek myths were awfully petty, so I suppose that tracks. But how does that work with how the city is actually run, or the people who live there? Are you a bourbon influencer just for fellow Olympians (population 13 + family members), or are you a bourbon influencer for the world? Olympus is simultaneously multicultural (see Orpheus, the Korean-Swedish hottie who broke Eurydice’s heart) and grounded by “our Greek roots.” (Who is “we,” here, Psyche? Inquiring minds want to know.) People can’t leave, really, but they do—do people enter? The ruling Thirteen (the petty folks who run the city as avatars of the Greek gods) see themselves as *international* arbiters of culture—but…what? To be fair, Eros is pretty derisive about that worldview, but still.

On the relationship level, Eros declared many many times that he was selfish so he was keeping Psyche, but I wasn’t sure why he liked her so much? I do understand why he saved her initially—she was in trouble for being kind to him in a moment when he was weak—but I didn’t buy the movement from “I’ll save her from my evil mom” to “I will keep her in my penthouse forever.”

As you can see, I have tons of questions about what’s actually going on in this world, and in the relationship between Eros and Psyche. If the writing had been less repetitive, I might have been more willing to let it go.

As someone who is plus sized, spicy romance books with a plus sized heroine is an instant buy for me. Combined with this book being the follow up to Neon Gods (one of my favorite books of 2022) this book was easily one of my most anticipated reads for this year. Boy did this book live up to the hype!

Psyche is a hot, confident plus sized social media influencer that is cunning enough to know how to use her platform to manipulate the entire city of Olympus. Eros is the sex "god" son of Aphrodite who is commanded to kill Psyche for his mother's political gain. He can't go through with it because Psyche is the one person in the city that has ever showed him kindness and humanity so instead they embark on a fake whirlwind marriage to protect Psyche from Eros' mother's rage.

This book is super sexy and the main characters have so much chemistry despite not being an expected match in Olympus high society. As a plus size woman I identified heavily with Psyche. Specifically, there were points in the book where Psyche complained about how most designers don't design for plus sized bodies and shops generally just don't carry things in our size. But Psyche still finds ways to be hot and fashion forward. It's such a small detail but I felt that it really sold me that Katee Robert really understands how it feels to exist as a plus sized person in the mundane day-to-day world. I love Psyche's character so much and I *really* love how Eros is absolutely obsessed with her and her body, belly, rolls, thicc thighs and all.

I know it's still early in the year but I have a feeling this book will still live on to be my favorite book of 2022.

I enjoyed Neon Gods, but I LOVED Eclectic Idol.
Eros and Psyche were just so entertaining! I loved the parallel between them. Two people who were being used by their mothers, trying to use their “talents” to make their way in Olympus. But within each other, they say more. To Psyche, Eros was more than just a hitman, and to Eros, Psyche wasn’t just an influencer. The book is told in alternating POVs, and through this, we can see the respect these two have for one another.
In addition to romance, there is a lot of scheming and secrets. There is quite a bit of politics that go on behind the closed doors of Olympus, and I enjoyed seeing that. I liked that this book was set in the heart of the city, and I was able to better understand how Olympus worked in this book.
Though Neon Gods was a streamer read, I connected with Eros and Psyche much more. This book is undoubtedly steamy, but the steamy parts are packed with a lot more romance, but I mean, it’s Eros; what else should we expect?
This book also sets up the next book quite nicely, and I cannot wait to read that one cause it’s going to be wild!

When I read a chapter excerpt for this ages ago - when they meet for the first time at the party - I was already in a state of “I need this in my hands now”.

The wait was 100% worth it. This book hit several different spots. The marriage of convenience. I was going to kill you but you were nice to me so change of plans. Full tilt do whatever it takes to keep you safe. Every stage of Eros and Psyche’s relationship progressed so perfectly and didn’t keep us hanging.

With each of these books the healthy balance of plot line drama and progression plus the cute/hot/steamy romance moments is truly what makes me love the authors writing style. Everything feels purposeful and nothing feels added in as a filler moment or to just add onto the heat. The wide cast of characters never feels overbearing and even when extras are on page there is never a feeling of the spotlight being pulled from our main characters.

I cannot wait to see where Roberts takes us from here in the next Dark Olympus books.

Hell yes! Fake marriage that’s so messed up and in the same “messy” way that this author can write 🔥🔥🔥!
I loved the heroine and her courage to confront her mother in law in the end.
It was great to see the characters from the first book as well and I can’t wait to read the next one because I already know it’s going to be a ride!

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy

Honestly this only the second book I've read by Kate Robert but it makes me want to go back and read her whole back catalog which would be a lot of books that I'm sure I'd love. I'm really enjoying the Dark Olympus series and to get Eors and Psyche was so fun-also plus-size Pysche so cool?! Love me a good fake dating to trope and add in the high stakes and this made for a fantastic story. Can't wait to read the next one!

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!

No I don't think you understand. I'm obsessed.

I have been a Persephone gal since the literal second grade, so I assumed Neon Gods was locked in as my favorite Katee Robert. And then came Electric Idol.

If you didn't enjoy the world building in Neon Gods, this one won't save it for you, but the looseness of this alternate Olympus we've been dropped into is actually something I really appreciate. For me, the focus is on the main characters and their relationship, and I'm not overwhelmed by a complex world, but there's still a sense of danger and high stakes.

Eros and Psyche's relationship development is just...mm. Excellent. Obviously there's intense physical chemistry and an exploration of that side of their relationship (and it is GOOD), but they also share a journey of learning to drop their masks and what's expected of them with each other. And also, I'll just reiterate real quick, the spice is top notch, especially if you like mirrors.

Also, as a classicist I have to mention—I really enjoyed this as a mythological retelling! Robert is very creative in adapting elements of the more traditional tellings of the myth to a modern setting.

Pros: Plus-size rep! I love that Psyche is an influencer popular and beautiful enough to threaten Aphrodite, and she's also not ashamed of her body or calling herself fat.
Cons: Robert plays it fast and loose with the world-building, so if you're picky about that, it may bother you.
CW: Abuse (emotional, financial), body shaming, murder (off-page), guns, explicit sexual content
Recommended for: KU fans, dark romance or general smut readers, fans of mythological retellings with some ~spice~

KATEE ROBERTS has done it again! Who knew I needed sexy greek myths in my life like this. The story of Eros & Psyche, Roberts creates a brand new world where these two lovers butt heads and fall deeply and sexily in love. I need more now!

It was okay, it didn’t blow me away, but an entertaining read nonetheless.

I wasn’t familiar with Eros or Psyche prior to reading this book but I did like the characters Katee created and it’s made me want to look more in to their story. It’s a shame we didn’t see Hermes more though, I really liked her in the first book.

I will continue with the series, I’m hoping the next one is about Callisto, I’d definitely like to see more from her, she would be an interesting main character.

I do have a couple of issues with the writing in Electric Idols:
-The pacing was a bit off, the first 50% was quite slow paced (predominately set over a 24hr time period) but everything seemed a bit rushed in the second half, the ending especially.
-Race. I know there is a big focus right now on more diversity and representation in books (as there should be) but this almost felt like boxes being ticked. I know there were 4 black women in the book because Katee Robert told me there were 4 black women in the book but that’s where it ends. Is including diversity in book’s simply naming the characters race and that’s it? I’m definitely not articulating it very well but as I said it felt more like box ticking. Hermes featured quite heavily in Neon Gods and I could be wrong (someone please correct me if I am) but I don’t recall her race being mentioned at all, however in this book she was referred to once as “a black woman with natural hair”. Although I should mention It wasn’t just the race of black characters mentioned, some white characters were also introduced as a white man or woman.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

After I read and loved NEON GODS last year, the sequel ELECTRIC IDOL immediately shot to the top of my tbr. Admittedly, my hopes for this book were unreasonably high because 1) Neon Gods was phenomenal, and 2) that little glimpse we got of both Psyche and Eros in book 1 promised that both characters would be a lovely cross between delightful and a handful, which they both turned out to be. I’m happy to say that this book lived up to my ridiculous expectations, but now the bar is set even higher for the next book in the series. ⁣

I adored Psyche’s and Eros’ relationship for the minute they spent time together, even though the circumstances were anything but romantic. Their chance meeting and their subsequent marriage of convenience made for such a fun story, and I absolutely loved how each one had their reservations about entering in to such an odd contract. But, as most fake dating and fake marriage tropes are wont to do, they eventually have their aha! moment and realize that they’re truly, madly, deeply in love. These two were just so swoony and cute, and this is just a book that made me smile. ⁣

But it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. There’s plenty of danger involved, thanks to the backstabbing Thirteen and Eros’ vindictive mother, and the politics and the never-ending threat of violence and upheaval really adds the perfect amount of intrigue and tension to this series. ⁣

Bottom line — a fantastic second installment in this mythological retelling series. 5 swoony stars. Many thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for the digital arc.

I love this book! What a great sequel to Neon Gods. I am very excited for the series to continue!

Eros, Aphrodite's "fixer" has been tasked with killing Psyche, daughter of Demeter. But after she shows him kindness at a party, he doesn't want to go through with it. Instead, he hatches a plan. A fake marriage to keep Psyche safe. What unfolds is a whirlwind fake romance that feels all too real. So what happens when Eros wants to keep Psyche?

I LOVED the marriage of convenience in this book. One of my favourite tropes and it was done so well. The angst of them both trying not to catch feelings, and then trying not to admit it, was amazing. Katee Robert has done it again with a fantastic romance.

Katee Robert's did it again! I' m a big fan of this author's steamy retellings and this one did not disappoint. I'm most familiar with her wicked villains series, but I think Roberts does an excellent job of bringing in the greek gods and goddesses in her modern romance retelling. The read was fun and easy and I binged it in a day!

Thank you to Sourcebooks and Netgalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Holy wow. Robert has done it again. This book was incredible. From page one all the way through the end I was sucked into this world and story. The way Robert set this up was out of this world! I loved every minute of it.

This was such a compelling read. I love the way Robert has gone about setting up this version of Olympus and the gods. It's such a fun twist that keeps you interested and intrigued. She is very good about dangling tiny tidbits so that you're totally engrossed in the world, characters and plot. Then before you know it, you've finished the book and don't even know how. I stayed up reading this, compelled to know what happens next.

The spice in this is top notch and I loved it. Psyche is one of my favorite parts of this book. Her character is complex and I loved her.

I could go on and on about how much I loved this, but it's one you definitely just need to pick up and read for yourself!

Electric Idol was more than I could have dreamed of! I’d love to live in Katee Robert's brain for one day, because the way she crafts her stories and connects them completely astounds me. Psyche and Eros are the most heart-warming couple ever, despite Eros being a murderer. Their romance is the cutest thing! I just want to put them in a bubble and protect them forever.

"I'll convince her that forever could be ours."

The plot surprised me; it definitely packs more than Neon Gods. There are so many moves at play, some of them you don’t even see coming. I loved the take of Psyche and Eros’ relationship. I mean, Eros gets tasked by his mother, Aphrodite, to kill Psyche and bring her heart. Literally. He ends up marrying her to protect her. 😭 The development and change in the characters was beautiful, and their relationship is such a breath of fresh air. Their devotion to each other will give you all the warm fuzzies.

"I will not let anyone harm you. You're mine now, and I protect what's mine."

It destroyed me to read more about Eros; pure gut-wrenching. He's someone who's never known what is love; his own mother would use him as a pawn. When Psyche asks him who takes care of him, his response is, "I don't understand the question." LIKE! My heart absolutely broke for this man. I'm glad the author showed this vulnerable side to Eros, and I'm so happy Psyche was just the kind of woman he needed to show him he's deserving of love.

"Beast, monster, man, it doesn't matter to me. You're mine, Eros Ambrosia."

I loved seeing all the side characters from Olympus, especially Helen and Hermes. I’m kind of obsessed with those two, and kind of secretly hoping for a romance on them!

Overall, Electric Idol is such a breath-taking sequel with a heart-gripping marriage-of-convenience romance.

"Fake" marriage, curvy heroine, and serious heat all create an explosive story in Electric Idol! I really adored Psyche because she is very down to earth and relatable. Eros is an unrepentant playboy murderer but he truly adores Psyche and that is hot.

Psyche fits the myth in that she is really self aware and strives for personal learning and improvement. Similarly, Aphrodite wants her dead and sends her son Eros to do the job. However, this is where the myth and Electric Idol diverge-instead he marries her (in the story). If you aren't up to date on your mythology, it doesn't matter. This book is brilliant in its adaptation of a classic love story.

My only frustration was I wanted these two to admit their feelings. They both kept it to themselves and it created unnecessary pain. However, that is typical of marriage of convenience tropes. Overall, this book was fantastic!

Electric Idol is a slow starter but the ending makes up for it.
I was a little sad we didn’t get to see more of Persephone and where she’s at in this book, but I loved Psyche and her trials and tribulations with Eros.

The only reason I’m giving this book 4 instead of 5 stars is the slow start and a chunk of book that’s a touch redundant with sexual encounters. A few sexy scenes are fantastic, but I don’t care for close to an entire chapter of the same sex scene, or multiple accounts with minimal variation. If that makes sense.

I was so excited to receive this ARC, I was obsessed with Neon Gods and knew I'd love this. In true Katee Robert fashion it was sexy, romantic and suspenseful. I really enjoyed it! It had less spiciness than Neon Gods it was bit more tame, but still as captivating. It sucked me in from the first chapter. It was a little fluffier, with more sweetly romantic moments (which I loved), but there is still that dark and foreboding overtone that I loved about Neon Gods. There was a fake marriage/dating, 'I was sent here to kill you.' tropes.

Eros looks like he could kill you but is a cinnamon roll, he is Aphrodite's errand boy and clean up crew, she sends him out to kill her enemies (mother of the year right there). Making Eros think of himself as this evil, irredeemable monster and doesn't deserve anything good. You can see his attraction to Psyche straight away and as they get into they're fake marriage you see him develop real feelings and its just so cute!

Psyche is a cinnamon roll but could kill you. She hides an amazing smart mind behind the glitz and glamour she's forced into. She's also so unapologetically herself when she needed to be and is confident in her looks, even when people are mean to her. The body representation in this book is amazing! Psyche is plus size and doesn't hide it and Eros is into everything about her. There's defiantly some insta-lust with them but it's the content we are here for!

Eros was just so obsessed with psyche but he was also insecure with himself, he doesn’t believe someone as amazing as psyche could love him (which just made me want to squeeze him), but he slowly opens his heart and lets her in and he can’t stop. I loved their scheming to solve their problems, it showed how smart they both were and I loved their dynamic. The smut was great, I do wish there was some more intense scenes like in Neon Gods.

Overall, I loved this book. The plot was intensive and has some twists. It was romantic yet dark and suspenseful. You got see a lot more of the characters mentioned in Neon Gods and you got to see their stories progress. I'm excited for the next book in the series as big plot points were teased at the end of Electric Idol! Thank you KR and Source Books for letting me read this ARC.
