Highly recommended! This book was equally impressive from its historical and Christian content. I learned a tremendous amount about women I'd never heard of before in American history. The author does a great job of showing how important black history is to the rising of this nation, calling out the injustices of the past and calling on the reader to action in the present. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book.

I enjoyed learning about these 10 incredible women and their faithfulness to the Lords calling in their lives and how different it looked for each of them! I am left with a desire to learn more about historical black women and the faithfulness of God. I struggled with the format of each of their stories, but was otherwise captivated by their lives.

This is such a thoughtful and insightful book. As someone who always struggled with learning "history" as a student, I loved connecting to the stories of these women through Jasmine's research and words. It was so helpful to hear not only about their lives and accomplishments, but also the impact their stories have had on Jasmine's life and the way our everyday lives have been shaped by their advocacy, hard work, and sacrifices. I walk away with eyes more open, feeling inspired by Black women I had not previous heard about in school and history books.

Sp grateful for going with my gut to request carved in ebony.

Shedding a light on inspirational Black unsung heros. There are so many figures that left behind a legacy and I hope this turns into a series to incorporate more people.

The experience of reading this book was at once enlightening, inspiring and sobering. This book challenged me and greatly impacted me.

As I read about the lives and valuable contributions of these faith-filled and courageous women, I learned so very much. Each of these brave souls summoned up the strength and willingness to advocate for others.

Reading this book made me more aware and increased my empathy to those impacted by slavery and racism. These women lived lives that were filled with advocating for others. Each woman profiled in this book was a true hero. Their stories are filled with examples of strength and courage. They earned their places in history and most certainly, deserve to be remembered.

They were created in the image of God, carved in ebony and they were willing advocates for others.

Be enlightened, be encouraged…read this book.

This book is not what I expected, which may have affected my rating a bit. The book is very memoir-heavy, which is great, but sometimes I got to the end of the chapter and felt like I had learned one thing about the profiled-women and 10 things about the author. Which, again, was interesting in its own right! It just wasn’t why I had picked up the book.
This book would be a great starting-off point for additional research on the women themselves, who are all heroes of the faith. But I found myself distracted by the author’s memoir-asides that could have been a whole book unto themselves! (Like separating ones idea of self from your family of origin—what does the author mean? Is it even possible? And depending on what she means, is it a good idea?)
This book was definitely more Christian than I expected (should have known since it’s published by Bethany House). I found it a little dry but interspersed personal anecdotes from Holmes helped a lot. It’s clear that she did her research! There was more commentary than biography for what I would have liked, but it makes sense because there was not a lot of source material for these women. There was, however, a lot of background on men. I was not expecting that.

I first discovered the author on Instagram and immediately felt a kinship because we were both pregnant at almost the same week. I couldn’t wait to read this book but unfortunately it got a little neglected because of young children. When I finally was able to get to it, I enjoyed it. I was expecting it to be a bit more biographical in nature, although I do realize that it was probably difficult when writing about women with little information available. I learned about women I didn’t know anything about and found it really interesting.

What an interesting, well written, and well researched book! Jasmine Holmes' Carved in Ebony is a treat - an excellent way to learn about women, passionate about their faith and culture, who made a difference in the world. These women are all African American women, most of whom lived around the time of the Civil War. They are all lesser known, but the author's in-depth research brings them alive and inspires readers to learn more. I appreciated the author's perspective as she explores her life and heritage through the actions of these remarkable women.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Carved in Ebony is a well researched book with ten woman who are inspiration to the Colored People who were enslaved for hundreds of years and how each women were significantly making some change in the lives of Black People. I came to know more about the struggles and how each they tried to get the freedom.

In each story we can see they had the belief in divine and it is explained a lot in the book and they were stubborn in helping others. There are some who joined missionaries and traveled across the world and give education and love to the people around. I loved that each woman mentioned in the story tried to uplift others.

There were a lot of discrimination and struggles they faced during those era which we cannot think of. I came to know about special schools, colleges and churches for the Black People which was built by rich coloured people for their people as they know how many white people treated them.

There a lot of people in history who were not educated but had the knowledge and will power to make changes in the society and to empower others and it made me think what am doing to make some change in the society, where there are bias and discrimination still exists.

Carved in Ebony tells short biographies of ten African-American women of faith and how they impacted the world them. When I started this book I was excited about the premise. I wanted to see how the author would explore God’s faithfulness through the stories of these women. Sadly, that was not what this book was and I found myself struggling to read it. I finally decided to DNF it after about 20 percent.

Carved in Ebony is a biographical sketch of ten women and the author's response to their stories. The stories were well-researched and sometimes included the subject's own words. If you enjoy biographies and historical accounts, you may enjoy this book.

I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley; a positive review was not required.

Carved in Ebony (CIE) is a collection of 10 short biographies of black Christian women that were instrumental in American History between the 18th and 20th centuries, primarily centered around the time of the Civil War.

Jasmine weaves research and storytelling seamlessly through this book in a way that shows her passion and excitement on every page. As I was reading it, I found myself thinking “just one more chapter, one more chapter” even though there were SO MANY other things I had to do lol.

Why does history remember some but not others? Why are some made much of and others forgotten to the archives or faded, unmarked photos?

Jasmine Holmes has worked hard to bring us the stories of ten black American women. Some of these women began their lives in slavery, some were activists, single mothers and preachers. Their stories have been largely forgotten but Holmes has done a stellar job of reviving their voice again.

“I tell you about their struggles and their triumphs not to elevate their Blackness, but to elevate God’s grace in creating that brown skin in his image.”

If only I had such a book, while in primary school, how my self esteem would've soared. Knowing that black woman weren't just vessels to be used and taken advantage in every way. Black women were and are strong in voice and conviction and do make profound contributions to America and the World. It is tiresome to hear about the same 5-10 blacks that are deemed worthy of acknowledgement from teachers for 12 years of schooling. You begin to believe that's all there are versus the hundreds of whites. Being a black child you are left feeling inferior to a perpetuated dominate and exhaustively taught superior race.

Not only does Holmes bring in the biblical and religious stance of love for all, but explains why those who claim christianity and act in harm are to be called out. Oh, my brain will not do this book justice. The ten women she choose to showcase in the book are remarkable. I am grateful to have read this book. It is not a one time read. I will definitely be adding this book to my home library and giving it as gifts to friends and my nieces.

Carved in Ebony should be in every library and taught in all schools. We must know the contributions of all and to no longer allow for black women's contributions to be hidden and ignored.

This was a very interesting history book to read. Jasmine Holmes tells the stories of ten Black women from history. These women were all new to me, and I was so glad to learn their stories. I was inspired and challenged by these courageous, godly women.

Some of the biographies are quite short, not because of lack of importance, but because of lack of available information. Though not much is known of some of lives of these women, Holmes nevertheless does an excellent job sharing about how they made an impact on history. Throughout the book, Holmes shares pieces of her own life as well, and she tells about why these 10 women impacted her so greatly.

It was wonderful to read about these women, and I also appreciated learning about how they each touched the author in unique ways. This is a history book worth reading!

Carved in Ebony is about black woman who made a difference in their generation. Women like: Maria Fearing, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Charlotte Forten Grimke and others. The author also share about her personal life and what those women can teach us in our own life.
I find the idea of the book interesting, however I struggle a little with the structure I thought it would be mini biographies, but I understand that for some of these women she could not find enough informations.
