Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for honest feedback. First, I think the cover is a bit underwhelming, but the title attracted my interest. I enjoyed reading the connections between cooking/baking and life lessons. Usually, I'm a bit iffy toward cooking guides that have "too much" personal talk in them. However, this one has a lot more to offer.

There aren’t many things I’d run for, but I have to say, doughnuts would be right up there. So, WILL RUN FOR DOUGHNUTS: The Montclair Bread Company Cookbook by Rachel Wyman, is a book I simply had to have.
The introduction was an interesting read as well as inspiring. You’ll learn how doughnuts tie in with running. Not only do readers learn more about the author, but Ms. Wyman also gives insights into all the must needs and tools of the trade.
It wouldn’t be a cookbook without recipes, so, check out some of these tasty treats . . . Mombo’s Bread Pudding, Chocolate Mayonnaise, Peach Blueberry Buckle, Cinnamon-Brown Sugar Pop Tarts, Currant Seeded Bread, Ciabatta, Apple Cider Doughnuts, Maple Bacon Doughnuts (oh yeah), Hot Chocolate Doughnuts, Yum Buns, Vanilla Glaze, Cream Cheese Frosting, and before you think your sweet tooth is going to fall out of your mouth, there are recipes for . . . Pizza, Grain Salads, Cheese Crackers, and so much more.
Though you won’t see me out running anytime soon (unless I’m being chased), I will be trying out some of the amazing recipes I read about.
I very much enjoyed, WILL RUN FOR DOUGHNUTS. Well balanced between story, beautiful photos, and enticing food, you’re going to enjoy this book as much as I did.

Will Run For Doughnuts is such a special book - it is a beautiful story about the power of community and how finding your place in the world can sometimes surprise you but is the ultimately what we all seek. I loved the personal passages shared by Rachel Wyman, someone who I was unfamiliar with prior to this book. Walking away from this book her story stuck with me almost more than the recipes themselves.

The book is broken up into the following sections:
Childhood Favorites - nostalgic treats form childhood mostly influenced by the author's grandparents
Bread - sourdough to pretzels and everything in between!
Doughnuts - the reason we are all here! The book includes brioche dough + cake doughnuts.
Community Favorites - beyond just dessert!
Recipes from Quarantine - how the bakery pivoted and how they added value to the greater community in the last 2 years

I really enjoyed this book! I found the recipes to be very "down home" and accessible for any home cook. This is definitely not the glossy magazine editor cookbook, but that is why readers will love it.

No more spending a bunch of money at donut shops when I cannnow make my own bakery quality right at home!

Love these recipes and I cannot wait to try more!

Even if you’re not a baker, the steps are easy enough for anyone!

Will Run for Donuts was a pleasure to read but was definitely an eyesore. I did not like the bright turquoise colour on the white, it hurt my eyes to look at and to read. The cover was the same colour but I did appreciate the footprint details in the donut, resembling sprinkles :) I also wasn’t sure whether the book was a cookbook or not at first glance of the title.

Rachel tells plenty of stories throughout the book. It can be seen that although she has endured a lot of hardship, but she has come a long way. She also talks a lot about Covid which is very relatable for many. Rachel shares her family stories which I thought were very special.

Included is a comprehensive materials list, less is more. Her grandmother taught her this from a young age. Rachel also includes useful techniques, which are explained in depth. I really appreciate this as I’m sure many others do.

Each recipe begins with a story, making these stories far more special than a generic recipe. Rachel’s grandmother Mombo uses baking soda to stop a fire in one of the stories, a useful tip haha!

Many of the recipes included in the book are old-fashioned and passed down from friends and family while others were created by Rachel with a great story behind them to tell.

While the photographs are a nice touch and very candid, they seem to be all over the place. The food photography is very mediocre. Some of the photos are filtered and styled while others seem to be very amateur. There is nothing wrong with amateur photos but at least keep it consistent. The size of the photographs is also very inconsistent. Some photos are squeezed onto pages while others have entire dedicated pages. I liked the collage, it’s a good way of combining candid photos.

I loved that Rachel included variations to some recipes, making them versatile for all tastes. She also included sandwich ideas with her bread recipe! Awesome touch!!

Overall the book’s look is a little sloppy but the content is definitely there. I truly believe this book would be a lot better with some aesthetic tweaks. Rachel’s stories and writing is good but the layout and such of the book need work.

Great info about making bready things and all those yummy things. I wish the nutritional info was there for each recipe.

I wish the measurements were in weights as well as cups and the like.

Overall, a very yummy book with too many pictures to make me want to break my diet. :)

Will Run for Doughnuts highlights recipes from Montclair Bread Company. I came for the recipes, but stayed for the story. Rachel Wyman's story of opening MBC and her travels on her way to success reminded me how when we fight for what we love, we get back so much more than we put in. Her recipes are easy to follow. Each one has tips on how to get the best product. I didn't know how the heck I would be able to make real donuts at home, but dang it if she didn't have some ideas for that too. Personally, I think it would be better for the reader to have some basic experience in bread making. Some of the recipes are more involved than I think most beginners would feel comfortable with trying out.

An excellent cookbook/memoir by the owner of the Montclair Baking Co. in New Jersey. And yes, they do have a running club that ends every run with doughnuts. You'll find delicious recipes for doughnuts, breakfast food, bread, and other goodies.

Each chapter opens with a memoir and Wyman's memories are often a part of the introduction to the recipes.

I enjoyed reading about the Montclair Bread Company and flipping through the recipes. There's a lot more than just donuts recipes. There are breads, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and lots of different types of donuts.

The cover caught my attention, the recipes kept it.

This was very user friendly and the stories were as inspiring as the pictures. As a runner and a doughnut eater, this book felt personal.

I have to say up front that I used to live in Montclair, but moved before Montclair Bread Company was established. So, the title of the book was what really attracted me initially since I’ve read about the bakery and have tried to get into one of their baking classes (which really do sell out quickly)! I’m also a cookbook fan and am especially interested in local cookbooks.
Will Run for Doughnuts is a lovely book that strikes the right balance of memoir and recipes. Rachel’s life challenges have been significant and she’s very open about them in the book….while still showing how she met these challenges head on and worked through them.
I’m not a doughnut person, but there are still a fair number of both sweet and savory recipes that I’m looking forward to trying. Her writing style is relaxed and welcoming (no lecturing) and I loved the practical tips she included. Among other things, I learned that I definitely wasn’t creaming butter and sugar long enough when baking!

I absolutely love leafing through cookbooks, and this one was an absolute delight. While it's mostly cookbook, it's also part memoir, telling the story of the Montclair Bread Company. It started out as a small hole-in-the wall, and grew to become a beloved part of the community, and a beacon of hope during the Covid pandemic.

Finding this book on NetGalley felt particularly serendipitous because my mom just bought trays and cutters to make doughnuts, and we have zero recipes to make them.

The book is divided into Childhood Favourites, Breads, Doughnuts, Community Favourites and Recipes from Quarantine. Each recipes starts with a paragraph or so of background or an anecdote, and I thought these were lovely.

The recipes themselves are absolutely scrumptious, and the photography is beautiful. Many of the basic recipes are used as building blocks for more complex recipes. A lot of recipes also contain a few variations to try, which is great for experimentation, or if you prefer difficult flavour combinations.

The instructions were easy to understand and follow. My only quibble was that I would prefer the measurements to be a little more precise (for example, a weight, rather than a cup.) I also work in metric, but there is a conversion table at the end of the book, (which would have saved me a bit of time converting... oops.)

On the whole, there are dozens and dozens of delicious recipes that I look forward to trying. I can't wait for the book to publish so I can buy copies for my family, and especially myself.

Will Run For Doughnuts: The Montclair Bread Company Cookbook strikes the right balance with the personal stories, the recipes, and the all-important information on the science behind baking. I am a cookbook junkie: I admittedly read them like books, absorbing the information within the pages and using the recipes as creative starting points. I love cookbooks to have the essentials: hints, tips, and great recipes, but also the human connection that comes with baking. I equate baking with family and I find that the best cookbooks draw readers in with personal details.

Will Run For Doughnuts delivers a strong message that has little to do with baking and a lot to do with life: hard work, determination, skill, and a little luck can help you to achieve your goals. The photographs of the finished baked goods are inspirational, along with the author's personal story.

I usually detail the different chapters of the cookbook, along with my favorite recipes, but every dish in Will Run For Doughnuts is worth making. The helpful hints and tips (like the smell of sourdough starter or the reason for cutting slits into the top of baguettes) are delivered in a way that I know I will remember when needed. I am confident in my own baking skills, as I learned at the knee of my mother, but this cookbook has given me some new information as well. I hope to be able to visit the Montclair Bread Company some day, but I look forward to making all of these delicious treats and meals in the meantime.

When I was a kid growing up, my grandmother used to make our entire family donuts for Christmas so I when I spotted this book I was super excited to take a peek. This cookbook really spotlights the recipes of the Montclair Bread Company and Rachel Wyman and while I didn't know much about them before I felt really at home reading this cookbook and was happy for the author's insights.

I feel like this isn't just a cookbook as much as it's a story of surviving during the time of Covid-19 and you really get that feel from this book. As a reader, you really feel the joy and love that comes with baking and as a person that loves to bake and also associates baking with happy memories this book was really heart-warming for me.

I enjoyed the recipes in this book and the overall aesthetic it provided!! I also found the story just so enjoyable and inspiring, If i’m ever in NJ I will most definitely be making a detour to Montclair!

Overall the aesthetic of this book is pleasant, if not very glossy or refined. I think this cookbook definitely needs to be marketed more as a love story of the community rather than a straightforward cookbook. It reminded me of a blog with a story for nearly each recipe, which some people are not particularly interested in. I think the collection of recipes was also a little slim.

Firstly, I have to say that I'm super excited when I saw the variety of doughnut recipes in this book. From filled to glazed donuts- the photos help to motivate me to try baking some of them. Understandable, seeing that the author owns a great bakery. However, I'm a bit disappointed that the book doesn't provide the weight measurements for the ingredients. Cup measurements aren't the most accurate. 1 cup of flour to one person could be different from another person's 1 cup. I also wish that the recipes aren't written in long paragraphs, but instead numbered/bulleted lists. I think that would help make things easier to read and follow. Other than those two things, though, a good cookbook!
