I really enjoyed the art and the characters on this one. It is definitely reminiscent of Kamisama Kiss, but different enough to be enjoyable. Would definitely be interested in reading more.

Recommended to those interested in a quick, cute manga.

I originally wanted to read this manga because the plot reminded me of one of my favourite mangas, 'Kamisama Kiss'. Other mangas also have a similar plot, so I wanted to try this one out. Sadly, I couldn't download the manga even after several attempts.

Unfortunately, I would've rated this one still lower if it wasnt for the gorgeous artwork.

To address the elephant in the room, yes, this does read like a rushed, and if I'm being honest, a very disappointing version of Kamisama Kiss. Which felt even more apparent having read that manga quite recently. Koharu is like a more annoying character with much, much less agency. And Iori - again, I'll be a little blunt here - is like a much blander Tomoe. There are more comparisons that can be done, but I'll stop here.

The premise by itself is interesting, of course. Especially if you're seeing it for the first time. A teenage girl gets caught in the world of spirit demons because of a power she encounters. In this case, the healing powers she got from her grandmother. And her first acquaintance in that world is an attractive fox demon with somewhat questionable behaviors. Now she has to navigate her school life which has become unexpectedly more dangerous as she deals with an unwanted tag-a-long.

The parts that didn't work well in the story was how rushed everything was. And how icky it felt in certain situations because of it. Like, dude, I know you're a fox demon and all, but you need a month long lecture on the word 'consent'. And of course, it ends up being romanticised inspite of the screaming sessions by Koharu because, 'developing feelings'.

If this volume was made into 2 volumes by taking it slower and more consensuallly, by adding a bit more to the story, it would've been so much better. Because, the backbone is there. And the second half went in an interesting direction.

There is a tiny chance that I might read the next couple of volumes. One, like I mentioned before, the artwork is gorgeous. And second, it's on Kindle Unlimited. 😅 Though sadly, a very tiny chance.

Outside of the art, there wasn't much I enjoyed about this manga. The characters were juvenile, and unfortunately, the storyline was less than original. If you like trope heavy, predictable stories, then you will like this. I usually eat tropes up like nobody's business, but this story was just boring and meh in my opinion.

A bit of a mixed bag for me. I am happy I had the chance to read, but I had hoped it was better. I probably won’t be reading the second volume in the series.

Since I am tired/busy/very tired, I have written a good/not-so-good review featuring all the reasons why I wasn’t a fan or why I was a fan.

OK/GOOD:
After the initial eh feelings toward the girl, I started to like her more and more. She is a sweet girl who likes helping out people. She doesn’t care if it is an enemy, like the senpai, or good, like the demons she meets. I am also happy that she often stood her ground against Iori and how he acts around her.
The demons and their many forms. From oni to gods to foxes to lions, we encounter quite a few different kinds in this manga. I am curious what more demons they will encounter.
The art style, while it was very samey at points, I also really liked the style and found the eyes especially well done and pretty.
The healing powers. Especially since it is used on demons. Something many people may not see as good.

NOT A FAN:
I wasn’t a fan of the girl, at least not at first. How she acted towards her grandma, treating her like she was crazy/weird. And then when her grandma is buried totally not caring and even being bored. WOW….
The story was just weirdly choppy at times. I mean, one time she was out with her senpai, and on the next page, we see her bound on a strange place. I really was scratching my head there. There were other parts that just went from x to an in one step. Like the battle with the girl from the shrine, I would have liked a bit more detail on that.
How we went from him being rude and mean and calling her a servant and causing all sorts of problems to him declaring she will be his bride… and this was just in one chapter. WTF? That really came out of nowhere and I would have loved to see that written better, more natural. Or well, as natural as you can get with a demon human story. Haha.
The engagement ritual itself. Forcing a kiss… sleeping together in one bed.. mark on your body. Wow, consent anyone? Even later he keeps sleeping next to her despite her saying no. She wants privacy and he is all like, oh but we are engaged, no need to be ashamed. Bro, no.
I am guessing we are getting a love triangle between Senpai and our fox boy? OH, LORD. I am not in for that. Everyone who knows me knows that I HATE love triangles.
It was funny (and by that I mean hilariously nope) how both our fox boy and our MC just looked SO SO much like other characters from manga.
I would have liked to know more about her powers and why they were just now developing and why grandma didn’t at least leave something behind to help out. She could have known that maybe her granddaughter would get her skills.
I did find chapter 3/4 a bit weird, given how she suddenly cares SO SO much about Iori. I mean, she doesn’t want him dead of course, but how emotional she acted stood out to me, especially given she generally feels neutral/frustrated with Iori. I think it would have been better had it been toned down a bit, or maybe had this chapter take place much later in the story. When their connection feels a bit more real.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
It was wonderful paced and very cute. The characters were dramatic which I love and it pulled me in. Honestly it felt like I was watching a manga and not reading, which is what I needed. If you are looking for something deep this would not be for you.

Gave me some wonderful nostalgic feelings with some love hate relationships. Like traditional shojo manga from the 2000s.

We have two main characters one human and one demon. The human discovers she can see and heal demons. In the process of this discovery she starts to fall for a demon and chaos stars to insue.

I really enjoy manga and although I did enjoy this one I would have liked a bit more detail. The lack of detail and character development made the plot feel very rushed. Regardless I do want to read the second volume to see how the story progresses and how the author grows. The art was beautiful and definitely enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this volume. I think it was very well written and the artwork was amazing. I can't wait to see what happens in the next volume!

I am on a huge manga kick right now and this one was AWESOME to me. I really go for the romance-y ones, Shojo for the win! I could feel the connection between the characters and it wasn't too OTT for me, though that is what I like to read, so take that with a grain of salt.

I am NOT an expert on manga by any stretch of the imagination, so while this was published in 2017, as per NetGalley, I just heard about it and read it now. Which is GREAT, because I shouldn't have to wait for the next volumes, I can order them and read what is out now. I hate starting a new series and having to wait SO LONG for the next book and then the next and the next. So this dodges that issue for me nicely.

Definitely one I will be recommending at the store for sure. 5, we all need a powerful fox demon in our lives, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Akita Publishing Co., Ltd. for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to try out this title.

I'm pretty new to manga, although I've been reading manhwa (Korean) for a bit. I'm mostly drawn to the art, which I really liked. The character depictions are very consistent and appealing. I liked the demons too. Shape-shifter characters are my favorite, so I liked Iori. I wish there was more info on the grandma and her relationship to the tool god.

The story was a little uneven and many background and plot details were omitted; perhaps these were lost in translation. Nonetheless, it was a cute starter and I'd try book #2.

Lovely art, fun pacing. For fans of Inuyasha, Kamisama Kiss, and Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits.

Not really my cup of tea...
The story appears rushed, and I think that perhaps something was lost in the translation.

The Fox's Kiss by Saki Aikawa

Rating: 4/5⭐

Synopsis: Koharu, is a young girl with very fond and strange memories of her childhood spend with her grandma. Her grandma would often talk about seeing demons and healing all the creatures who are hurt. But, after her grandma dies, Koharu discovers that all the things her grandma has said we're true. When she accidentally heals a very strong fox demon, she discovers that she too has her grandma's powers. The handsome fox demon, Iori, then makes Koharu his servant and later bride. He kisses her and they are engaged. What will happen to Koharu, now? How will she live with the fox demon in his human form? Where is her fate leading her? Read on to find out.

Review: A very short and sweet volume 1. I loved the art, it was so pretty and appealing. The cover is gorgeous, in fact it's because of the cover that I requested this book.

I like the characters. Koharu is my favourite, I love how cute, determined, kind and stubborn she is. Iori is hilarious. There were scenes between Iori and Koharu that made me laugh.

As for the story, it's interesting. There are all the right elements in this book, there's romance, a love triangle, action, and magic, plus the story is fast paced. I mean what more do you need. I'll definitely pick up the next volume. I see a lot of potential in this series.

Now, the one thing I didn't like was the forced engagement. Koharu was given no choice in the matter. And even when she said no multiple times Iori was just turning a blind eye towards it. I agree that Koharu fell for Iori eventually but the way their story started is not good. Romanticising forced relationships where one person has no choice over the relationship is not ok. It gives wrong ideas to today's youth. Apart from that one thing, I actually enjoyed reading this manga.

If you love action, drama, magic and romance, then I'd suggest that you give this book a try.

The Fox's Kiss is a pretty typical shoujo manga. Koharu is a typical high school girl with fond memories of her youth; her grandmother always talked about seeing and healing demons, but as Koharu grew older, she realized those stories were all lies... Until her grandmother passes away and she meets Iori, a fox demon, and realizes those powers now belong to her. Iori says he's taking Koharu on a servant, but he's the one who follows her back to the city and stays by her side while she tries to live her normal life at school.

This manga is, as I said, very typical. You have a love triangle between the charming prince of the school, the rough, bratty newcomer, and the 'normal' high school girl, Iori declaring that Koharu is his fiance because he said so (she is also 16), and a fast-paced story full of ups and downs. This story was pretty dramatic and had a LOT going on every chapter, so this was even faster-paced than I'm used to. This would be great for fans of Inuyasha or Fruits Basket, but it's so reliant on tropes that people who love those stories will most likely find this repetitive and unsatisfying.

Unfortunately, as someone who has read manga and watched anime for a while, this was nothing I hadn't seen before and I ended up being very unimpressed. There are always ways to take tropes and stories and redo them in a fresh way, and I wouldn't bar anyone their take on this sort of story! In this case, however, it was cluttered, basic, and I wouldn't pay money to continue.
