I was drawn to Hematite thanks to the synopsis, but I couldn't quite immerse myself in the world. The illustrations were beautiful and helped me continue reading, but I'm not sure if I would pick up the next installment. At times, lettering was also a little difficult to read, but it may be easier to read on paper compared to on a screen.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel! The art style is beautiful and gives a unique feel to the story. The story-line sucked me in and I couldn't stop reading! I didn't expect the twist to the ending and can't wait for the next one!

This book’s central focus is a unique vampire who cannot stand the idea of blood and things traditionally associated with being a vampire. The story is unlike any vampire story I’ve ever read and the graphics are really stunning. I sped through the book, but I am not sure I would recommend it. As a reader, you step into this book with very little backstory and unfortunately, the characters don’t reveal as much of their backstory as they should for this to really feel like a comprehensive story. It almost feels like readers are jumping into the middle of a story that then comes to a really abrupt halt at the end of the book. I wish there was more detail and a bit more attention to pacing.

This was a really different read for me in the best way possible. The storyline was good, the art was incredible and it was just all around very well put together. The characters for me was the best part, especially Hematite is very fascinating character and one who I’m excited to see what they will do with next! Definitely a book I’m gonna pick up a physical copy of!

This graphic novel is about a young vampire called Hematite who is trying to find her way in life and where she fits in. Even though she is a vampire, she refuses to drink blood (which her parents don’t appreciate) and instead eats vegetable soup which I found very funny 🤣 All of the characters were typical teenagers at school, and the plot was simple yet interesting and you can’t help but love the characters. The art style is super cute as well! It ended on a cliffhanger so I really hope there is going to be a second one, which I would devour in twenty minutes like I did this one 🥺 if you’re looking for a quick fun read set in a magical world, I reccomend u this 🙃

Hematite is a not-like-the-other-vampires teenage girl struggling with her identity and belonging. She doesn't want to drink blood, loves poetry, and strives to be "normal." Her story is both endearing and melancholy, and I hope she catches a break soon!

I absolutely loved the art style. The drawings are super intricate and spooky, and pair perfectly with the overall mood of the book. I think the pacing was a bit off, and the book could have benefited from being a bit longer — that ending came out of nowhere! — but this works as an introduction to a longer series. I also enjoyed Hematite's little emo poems. Overall, this was a charming story about friendship, fitting in, and trying to make your own way in the world.

Hematite is a story about a young vampire, who prefers to study in the mixed school and doesn't want to drink blood.
This is the beginning of the story and it's set up quite well - I'm interested to know how things will go. The characters are well developed and its easy to care about what happens to them. The drawings were okay as well - the colour scheme fits the atmosphere really well, although I'm not that big of a fan to the drawing style itself.
I'd recommend this to anyone interested in fantasy comics/graphic novels.

Review of Hematite, Volume 1 - Serenade, by @vmaderna and @fpiatti

🧛🏻‍♀️🧛🏻‍♀️🧛🏻‍♀️spoilers ahead🧛🏻‍♀️🧛🏻‍♀️🧛🏻‍♀️

Hematite is a vampire girl who feels stifled by her family’s illustrious standing in society. She chooses not to drink blood (I know, but there are no sparkly vampires here) and attend the Wolven School that has a more diverse pupil roll than the elite Diaemus Academy that most vampires attend.

She writes maudlin poetry and is in unrequited love with a human boy, Emile. Hematite has one good friend in Drunela, a draugr that her parents do not approve of, but doesn’t get on well with the rest of Drunela’s friends, who make fun of Hematite’s poetry.

When Hematite uses her powers to save Drunela when an adventure goes wrong, the group are able to connect and Hematite becomes one of the gang.

When Hematite attempts to connect with Emile, however, tragedy strikes, and we are left with a cliffhanger. What will Hematite do to try to put things right?

This fantastically gothic graphic novel was translated from French, and the artwork is beautiful and haunting.

If you enjoy graphic novels/and or vampire stories, I definitely recommend. I will be looking out for Volume 2.

So I went into this feeling very Halloweentown, but left it feeling very Dark Shadows. I don’t know what the plot was meant to be… was there one?

There was a definite open ending, so I know it’ll be atleast 2 books, most likely more. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going… BAM! A carriage takes my ideas out of the picture!

I’m confused. What did I just read? 😂

There's potential here, but the work as currently packaged feels incomplete. Hematite is a young vampire in a world were humans, werewolves, living skeletons, monsters, and all sorts of beasts seem to live comfortably side by side. Hematite, however, is unhappy being a vampire an rejects much of her family's traditions such as drinking blood (she appears to mostly eat some sort of vegetarian stew) and attending an elite all-vampire academy. Instead Hematite prefers to attend a local school that accepts a range of species as students, is best friends with a ghoul, and is in love with a human classmate (although, like Hematite's friends, I don't really see the appeal). The volume is primarily focused on establishing the main characters and their relationships with one another, with the only significant plot occurring the last few pages. However the story ends on a cliffhanger/the aforementioned plot development, which makes the rest of the book seem inconsequential in comparison. I'd happily try this again as a part of an omnibus or complete works text, but found this partial story to be underwhelming.

She’s a unique vampire that is finding her own way. She doesn’t want to drink blood so she eats vegetables instead. She can’t get into trouble or her parents will send her to a vampire only school and that’s the last thing she wants.
I liked the illustrations a lot.

I loved this graphic novel! It was so cute and the illustrations reminded me of the spooky kids books I used to read when I was younger. Surprisingly, all of the main characters were relatively well fleshed out. I thought it was super good and there is a good setup for continuing the story, which I"m pretty excited about. Good show!

Thanks to Netgalley and Europe Comics for the advanced copy in exchange for this review. :)

Hermatite is a vampire who goes to a different school to wear her parents want her to go. This is the first time I read a book in a comic form and I really liked the layout and the pictures where fantastic. I liked how there was only bit of writing on each picture but I also liked how it was just a picture at times without writing.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book.

Hematite is the only Vampire in a school of humans and other ghoulish creatures alike. This was a lovely read. Vol 1 is not to long and left me excited to read the next installations! I am a Halloween everyday of the year type of person and this was exactly my type of book. It would defiantly be a good fall read to get into the spooky spirt. The art is really stunning and the setting of the book has a old timey feel to it. Looking forward to the rest of Hematite's story highly recommend giving this a read!

Hematite tells the story of a vampire who comes from a well known family with an ancient bloodline. The graphic novel has a wonderfully dark atmosphere and gothic artwork. In one short volume it captures themes such as the importance of being yourself vs. pleasing your family and finding your place in the world. The supernatural world we are introduced to will leave you wanting more, as will the cliffhanger ending. It's an quick and light-hearted read that covers more than expected with a diverse cast of supernatural friends. Would recommend and look forward to Volume 2!

It is story of societal pressures which try to fit you into a mould that is forged out of slow evolution. A teenager with different thinking and alignment can find it hard to fitin. Here teenager is a vampire. Vampire girl. Story is based on her struggles. A nice artwork is embedded in a cozy story. A nice graphic novel.

This book is fantastic. The art style is very classic horror, but also fun and stylized. The main character is likeable in a broody teenager way and the supporting cast is adorable. Can't wait to read what comes next.

Awww okay I loved this one. Not only is the art style absolutely gorgeous and perfectly gothic for this story, I loved Hematite and the world this is set in.

Full of monsters, the world was really fascinating. Hematite is a vampire who doesn't like to drink blood, day dreaming of Emile. Ugh I just loved it so much! Definitely recommend!

Hématite is a vampire girl with an aversion for her family's ways finds herself wanting to be more human than ever. Part of her desire to be human is her romantic interest in Emile, a human at the same mystic academy as Hématite. While her naiveté is alluring, the book also details themes of forgiveness, friendship, and morality that strings the premise beyond its original intention. Hématite's inner turmoil between doing right versus wrong was apparent and well-written in a novel I would recommend for all middle-grade students to read.
