When i heard about this book i was so exited to listen to it and i was not disappointed. I loved both of the Narrators i think the read the story really well and made sure to continue capturing my attention. I loved the premise of what the book was about it the story gripped me from the very beginning. I loved the characters and the way the evolved as the story went on. I also enjoyed the chapter switch in POV's i think it made the book more interesting. This book also made me emotional because of how beautifully this was written, i really connected with the characters as well. I was also rooting for the main characters to get together because i love them both so much. This is definitely ne of my new favourite books and i give it 5 stars highly recommend reading you wont regret it.

First thing first Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to review this book

Thanks to the author for putting all effort in this story

I don't think I like this story... Don't get me wrong is not bad, I like the concept of it, it's brilliant but,,,

for some uncanny reason it reminds me of the rest of the Meca stories I have read, obviously not the same but they were some elements on this story that I already knew how it was going to be and just doesn't make me enjoy the book as I should,

The characters did not have depth and the story was predictable to set two people on the same path and let them wonder for a while before finding each other, something that I have read before and it is not new.

the time lapses are too short and the action scenes were sometimes unfinished, the characters were hesitating and there were a lot of moments that could have been described on the book.

At the end I'm not sure If I will continue with the series maybe some other time.

Lesbian Evangelion! Well, not really, but with the giant robots, the pilots, the names, it all reminded me of that anime.
I listened to the audiobook and I really liked the narrator and the slightly different intonation of the voices she gave both characters.
We have two very different women coming together to defeat a bigger evil. What can go wrong if not everything?? A wild rollercoaster of action, emotions, and twists I wished I saw coming. I didn't. That ending? Why would you do this to me? I need the next book asap!

Inventive and genre-bending, Gearbreakers brings a unique twist to sci fi. I enjoyed the story and especially the elements of found family among the gearbreakers. I did find the romance a little less successful than the other platonic relationships in the book. I struggled a little with one of the audiobook narrator's characterization of Sona as robotic while the other voiced her more naturally and wish there was more cohesion in the performance, but I enjoyed this one nonetheless. Overall, the writing was incredibly strong, and I'll look forward to reading more from the author.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this audio ARC! I really wanted to read Gearbreakers, so I was so excited to receive this!

Gearbreakers follows Sona, an altered Windup pilot and Eris, a Gearbreaker or someone who's made it her goal to take down Godiola's fiercest weapons. When Eris gets captured on a mission, Sona helps her escape because even though she's in the midst of it, she wants to see Godiola fall as well.

First of all, I have loved Cindy Kay ever since I first heard her. She really brings Sona to life and Sona quickly became my favorite character. It's my first listen with Catherine Ho, but I think she did an amazing job bringing the edgy, high-strung Eris to life. My favorite thing about this audiobook was that when Kay did Eris's voice within Sona's chapters and Ho did Sona's voice in Eris's chapters, they really did an awesome job of mimicking the other's voice. I was blown away the first time I heard them do it.

This was a great story, and I really liked it. Aside from Sona and Eris, meeting the other Gearbreakers was a lot of fun too! My only complaint was that Eris and her personality really started to grate on me from about 35% on, but otherwise I was really rooting for Sona and Eris and had a lot of fun with this audiobook. Recommended.

Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for the audio ARC! (if that's what it called?)

I really liked the voices of the narrator and I felt as if they represented the characters well, as well as having enough emotion in their voices for the more poignant scenes. I struggle with audiobooks, and I feel as if this was more on the less-struggle side for me! Which was a definite plus,

The found family-- or forced family in some cases, felt true, and the breaking of the latter felt both overly harsh and somehow overwhelming. Zoe Mikuta definitely had a way of bringing to life minor characters who would be quickly killed off, yet giving enough of them to find something to mourn. The syntax each spoke in (due to the relatively few contractions, as if there was effort into limiting them to make characters seem more mature) seemed stilted and would take me out of the book.

I very much did enjoy the dialogue between Eris and her Gearbreaker family, as well as some of the snark that they exchanged with each other. Their relationship felt true and tight.

Overall, this book was a solid YA debut. Some of the tropes-- such as "enemies to lovers" seemed to be oversold (perhaps "reluctant allies to lovers"?) as they seemed to be going for the same ultimate endgoal. However, I still enjoyed the characterizations, most of the background characters, and the ending!

I'm afraid I find the author's prose to be rather green. It tries too hard to be edgy and gritty but succeeds only in being overly dramatic. The lesbian rep was not great either. I'm sure that fans of Iron Widow will like it more than I did as it has a similar tone.

DNF @ 40%

This was a very anticipated read for me but I just couldn't find myself interested in this at all.

I hate dnfing arcs but I just didn't want to force myself through this.

The first 20% was quite lacking overall and I almost dropped it there. It did start getting better but still not enough to grip me. This was also just slightly messy overall.

One of the better parts is the setting and how nicely it's built and fits with the story.

Thank you to Netgalley and Recorded Media for an audio arc in exchange for my honest review.

I received an audiobook copy of this book and I have to say the two narrators did an excellent job with these characters! If you’re interested in Gearbreakers, I’d definitely recommend going with the audio version.

As for the story, I really liked all of the tech and robot stuff! Everything about it was so interesting to me and I wish we had focused more on that versus all the time spent on thinking about revenge and flashbacks.

I also continuously ended up confused on what was happening because there were just so many repetitive flashbacks that I don’t think needed to be there. I understood pretty quickly that both of these characters hate the academy and the people running it so the flashbacks that kept highlighting their rage and revenge got old, really quick.

The main character also just kept grating on my nerves. I loved the love interest and her POV though!

Just overall, I don’t think this book turned out to be for me. But if you’re into sapphic revenge driven characters and robots and war and death, check this one out!

I listened to the GEABREAKRS audiobook while I read the physical book, as I do with most audiobooks. I really really enjoyed it! Eris and Sona were both such likeable characters and it was really easy to root for them. The found family trope was incredibly present and incredibly heartwarming. It's been a long time since I've wanted to be in a book, but I found myself genuinely wanting a Geabreaker crew of my own. I do wish the rest of the crew had been fleshed out just a bit more, but overall I really liked this book and I can't wait for the sequel.

Audiobook provided by NetGalley and RB Media in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I thought GEARBREAKERS was a really interesting concept. The mecha-deities are both awe-inspiring and terrifying... and also kinda something I think would be SUPER cool to operate. I enjoyed the characters and the dynamic between Sona and Eris. While I did expect more of a romance between the two, how everything plays out makes sense within the rest of the narrative.

The things that didn't entirely work for me I'm confident are par for the course with a debut and are things that can be changed as Mikuta continues to write (in general) and develop this series. I will say that the "you don't have permission to die" got repetitive pretty quickly - if it was a pop culture reference to something, it went over my head. But iterations of this phrase are everywhere throughout this entire novel.

Catherine Ho and Cindy Kay do a good job with the audiobook narration. I appreciate when publishers use multiple narrators when a book is told from more than one point of view. It makes the transition between protagonists much smoother as you listen to the novel.

This is a solid addition to a YA sci-fi collection and I look forward to the next book in this series.

Wow this was good!

For me it's always a risk when listening to an audiobook for a science fiction or fantasy novel because there's usually a lot of world building that can be easily missed if I'm not paying close attention. With that being said, I thought that this audiobook was excellent. There are two narrators for the two different points of views and they were both really good. The actresses brought a lot personality to their characters and they really brought out the humor and emotion in the characters' voices. I will say that I did like one of the narrators over the other one but it didn't ruin the experience in any way. I also don't think this book needed two narrators and could have done just fine with one since one of them does outshine the other.

Aside from the narration, I thought that the book itself was incredible! The two main characters had very distinct personalities and I loved that they really had their own found family (which is my favorite trope). The action of the Gearbreakers against the Windups was so much fun and I could just see the fights playing out like a movie in my head. Even though the main story doesn't really get going until a little ways in, I never felt that there was a dull moment and I was completely engaged the entire way through.

Also, on a side note, I LOVED Eris's sister, Jenny. She was so dang funny and I would find myself laughing every time she was on the page.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars
-5 stars for the story
-4 stars for the performances

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

In a world with no gods what is to stop mankind from making their own? Large mechanical beings called Windups are paired with talented cyborg-esk pilots to create a new deity. Gearbreakers make up the rebellion, taking these Mecs down from the inside. But when a Gearbreaker is taken into the bot territory, a pilot with an axe to grind frees her and hopes to join the fight in bringing down her oppressors. Can these two clashing causes come together to take down a bigger evil? Or is it all just a ruse to take down the Gearbreakers from within?

I was worried when I first started listening to this story. Pacific Rim was just okay for me, and while I can see the similarities, this story blows Pacific Rim out of the water. The intricate details that goes into the Windups and their pilots is something that I would love and origin trilogy on. While Sona (our pilot) and Eris(our Gearbreaker) make an interesting story, I wanted more about the Windups and how the deities are made and maintained. Perhaps I'll get more in book 2 and I just need to be patient. My biggest gripe is the pacing of the story. The beginning is a whirlwind, followed by a ton(or so it felt) of filler and then the final act. The final act pulled me back in, but only just. The story has some amazing moments and cool ideas, earning it 4 stars from me and interest in book 2.

I recommend this for anyone who loves a slow burn romance, is good with flipping between points of view often, and who love enemies to lovers. Age-wise I would put this at 14+ as there is some descriptive eye trauma and gore.

oh my gosh! I loved this! This was everything my sci-fi and robot loving lesbian self could have ever asked for! I flew though this book and loved every single page of this book. I gobbled this up in one night because I just couldn't put it down. I finished it and wanted the sequel right away. Please please do yourself a favor and go get this fantastic book!

2021 is the summer of Sci Fi sapphics!

Eris and Sona are two girls on opposite side of a futurist mech war. When Eris is imprisoned, she and Sona instantly clash. Here we watch the slowburn enemies to lovers dream unfold. Both girls are full of violence and hard edges. So watching them become soft and fall for each other is so heartwarming and wholesome. The world building is intricate and beautiful but incredibly hard to follow at first.

Angry sapphic enemies to lovers is always a win for me no matter what.
