Another kind is an amazing adventure with super powered kids, figuring out who they are and what they want out of life. It's equal parts coming of age and finding where you belong. I found the artwork amazing and will be hoping for a sequal. All of the kids are so REAL, and felt fleshed out as characters. Pic up Another Kind if you enjoy Animorphs or the Maximum Ride series'.

Love, love, looooved this! First, I have been following Cait May on Twitter for years for her Critical Role art and she is so incredibly talented. I was super excited when I realized she was involved with this. Second, this has so many incredible elements to it and they work really cohesively into this heartwarming story of cryptid kids overcoming some wild challenges to figure out their place in a weird and not super welcoming world and to understand that family is what you make it. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more from this creative duo in the future!

This was so cute, I loved it so much! I love anything to do with cryptozoology and you had everything here! This is a fun and engaging story with so really great discussions throughout about identity and found family. It almost made me cry at the end. Each character is a precious cinnamon roll who deserves happiness. 10 out of 10 definitely recommend.

This was a good graphic novel. I really liked how all the kids were different than "normal". I would love to see more.

Another Kind was a one-of-a-kind graphic novel. Truly, I don't think I have read/ seen one that looked and read so beautifully and so kindly. I was reminded of young Avengers or Runaways, as the main characters in the story are all young and differently-abled, and on the run from a government lab. And I just have to say it again, the art and the color palette in this graphic novel were just the most stunning I have seen. I so enjoyed reading this book.

This one reminds me of Maximum Ride: odd kids on the run from a group that wants to control them. I like the addition of mythological beings in this story. And the framework of each kid's background is solid. There's room for this series to go some pretty cool places.

This is one of my favorite reads of 2021! It's so sweet, adventurous, adorable, inclusive, and just plain amazing. The characters make such a wonderful found family, the artwork is amazing, and the plot was so interesting. It's so hard to review this book, partially because I don't want to spoil anything but mostly because it's one of those books that left my heart feeling full and happy so I can't make many coherent statements about it. I would really recommend reading this book. The artwork is vivid, the cryptic characters are fun, adorable, and inclusive, and the plot is mysterious and adventurous. This will likely be one that I add to my physical shelf to reread for those fuzzy feelings.

This is a good fantasy graphic novel for tweens to read! Especially those who like X-Men and Stranger Things. Recommend to students who liked Star Scouts and This Was Our Pact.

This is a great title for teens for many reasons. The way these kids work together and forgive each other and forge forward in the face of adversity was amazing. Six kids with supernatural abilities live in some secluded environment with a rigorous schedule. Weird things keep happening and the agents taking care of them decide to move them to a more secure facility. The person driving double crosses them and the kids make him crash and have to figure out what to do next on their own. Each of the kids have a short back story which helps you identify with them and they each have a unique personality too. I think this title could make some great talking points for a class or book club.

This book was received as an ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books - HarperAlley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was the two I's: Interesting and Intense. At first I was confused at the age group for this graphic novel. I would not probably recommend this for middle grade due to the violence and graphic scenes but for the high schoolers - adult most definitely. I do agree that fans of Marvel's Runaways will appreciate this series due to its similarity of a group of out of the ordinary misfits set out to save themselves and everyone else from the powers and strategists of the Collector. The artwork in this book was so breathtaking that I had to continue. The language use was perfect in correlating with the story. I can definitely see our teen book club go crazy for this and have enticing discussions.

We will consider adding this title to our Y Graphic Novel collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Six kids search for a new place to call home. I was hooked the instant the book was described as The Runaways meets the Witch Boy. I loved the art and was instantly curious about this world. The "monsters" were adorable. They included a yeti, selkie, aliens, shapeshifters, wisps. But what I loved the most is the message "who really are the monsters". The story is cute and it is meant for kids, but it was well done and complex enough that adults will love it too. I was invested from the start and my students will be as well. Can't wait to get this in my classroom library.

Lovely sci-fi graphic novel about misfit kids, who are also mythical creatures kept at what's essentially Area 51. When a rogue agent tries to abduct them and take them to a bizarre evil mystery man, the kids escape. As they navigate through the world, they encounter friends and foes and other kids like them. Lots of fun. I know middle graders and teens will devour this graphic novel.

This graphic novel centers on six not-quite-human kids who initially live in the safety of a secret government facility nicknamed the Playroom until a security breach disrupts their lives. They are forced to go on the run, fleeing from a mysterious being known as the Collector. While on the run, they meet other “irregularities” who live hidden from society. They realize, too late, that a sanctuary many irregularities have headed towards is a trap set by the Collector and come face to face with him. The group and their new allies must find a way to overcome the Collector’s leech-like powers. In the end, the group prevails, making a new home for themselves in a safe place they had been searching for all along.

Readers are sure to appreciate the diversity of the cast as characters come from different ethnic backgrounds and LGBTQ+ identities. Additionally, there is a great diversity in the types of cryptids depicted, with the main cast featuring a half-Yeti, a will o’ the wisp, a bear shifter (Nandi Bear), an alien (Reptilian), a selkie, and a sea monster. A varied cast of secondary characters includes other types of creatures which are sure to appeal to readers interested in the supernatural. The art highlights the diversity of the cast with the use of a broad range of colors. Various paneling and lighting styles efficiently show off action and shifting moods as certain parts of the story touch on darker themes. While the backstories of central characters include dark moments, yet they overcome past hardships by sticking together. The moments the young characters spend together feel authentic as they banter. The two older members of the group face the responsibility of caring for the rest, particularly the youngest, who is 6 years old. At times, she takes childish actions that jeopardize the group, yet those around her show her nothing but love and support as she struggles to fully understand why she must hide what makes her different from “normal” people. The primary messages of embracing one’s differences and the importance of found family are ones that every reader is sure to learn from.

Another Kind is delightful graphic novel full fun of, mystery and American folklore. It also checks so many of my boxes. Queer characters? Of course. Similar to Stranger Things? Yep. Full of cryptids? Heck yeah. Found family trope? Big time. This book was clearly a huge success for me and I think our students will really enjoy, especially if they are fans of things like Buzzfeed: Unsolved or the TV show supernatural. It follows a group of cryptid kids trying to escape a mysterious government figure, and it takes all across the U.S. There's even a whole section on all the cryptids you might run into as you cross the country. Even my favorite, the Loveland Frogman was included! This story also features two nonbinary characters. These storylines are told with nuance, and both characters are only met with love and support when they came out. One of the characters has a compelling and relatable journey with gender and body dysmorphia, and I'm so excited for trans kids to read it. Overall, this is an excellent book that I can't wait to get into our library. I'm so excited for more people to experience this wonderful bit of magic, joy and found family.

I really enjoyed this one. It's a story about "Irregularities"--kids with different powers and abilities--who are being hunted by multiple groups while trying to find a safe place to be themselves.

It's got a diverse cast of characters (REPRESENTATION IS IMPORTANT) and a sweet "found family" theme running throughout the book. Our rag-tag group (there's a yeti, an alien, a werebear, a selkie, a fae, and a delightful little sea creature) loves and protects one another at all costs.

I really enjoyed learning the backstories of all the kids (though I definitely want more), and I adored the family that they stayed with in the middle of the book. I just wanted all these precious beans to be safe and happy.

I immediately added this to my library cart. My students will love it.

This is a really fun read! An adventure story about extraordinary children fighting to be accepted and loved. The Irregularities are children and adults who are shape-shifters, selkies, yetis, and more creatures of legend. six children are double-crossed and fight to survive. The story is fun, fast-paced, and engaging. The art is really great, with enough detail without being too bogged down. The ending is happy but I do hope to see more of these children and their adventures. A great read for fans of the Animorphs graphic novels.

With the rise in interest with cryptids, Another Kind will definitely serve as one more addition to books that include cryptids in a contemporary setting. This is a story about six young cryptids, or monster-type youths that are trying to find a place to call their own without being judged for their appearances. We have a half-Yeti, a will o' the wisp, a bear shifter (Nandi Bear), an alien (Reptilian), a selkie, and what appears to be an eldritch youngster. All six were kept in a facility that looked after them once they were found. However, there's been an inside betrayal and the majority of the book sees all six on the road while trying to avoid any and all government types.

Honestly, this really hits the spot for the spooky time of year while also providing the cozy comforting element of autumn. Another Kind should appeal to middle grade and young adult readers along with any readers who appreciate supernatural/preternatural stories.

Highly recommended.

This is absolutely one of the sweetest, most heartstring-tugging, loveliest things I've read in such a long time — and one of the best depictions of the found family trope I've ever seen. The characters are so diverse and lovable, the storyline will break your heart and mend it all over again, and the art is stunning. The color palettes are vivid, the designs are detailed, and Maggie is so cute it hurts. I feel like I'm just rambling and gushing right now because this is one of those books that I loved so much, I don't know how to fit it into a coherent review. I just want to shove Another Kind into every kid's hands, and every adult's, too (especially if you love cryptids as much as I do). ♥

✨ Representation: two nonbinary characters (including one character questioning and then coming out as nonbinary); most characters are BIPOC

This was such an incredible story about friendship, love, and a beautiful found family. Mixing together Marvel’s Runaways with Hotel Transylvania, Another Kind is a heartwarming graphic novel that is ideal for a young person and the young at heart, basically everyone!

Found Family is a trope that is near and dear to my heart. So the fact that this book has an ideal cast of characters, makes it the perfect book to tug at your heart strings.

There is incredible representation of genders and ethnicities (as well as a race of reptilian aliens). I look for books that aren’t cookie cutter and Another Kind breaks the mold completely!

I can’t wait for this book to be out there in the world for everyone to fall in love with it like I have. I really hope we get to have more time with these characters in the future. (Hint Hint! Another book, preferably! Maybe a series of them.)
