"The Whitfield Estate is hidden deep in the Big Thicket outside of Soda, Texas. This reclusive family brood amassed their oil and timber fortune over four generations, and now that it's been done, they have become painfully aware of how isolated and broken they are as a family.

Tessa Nettles, fresh from college, is hired as the estate manager. But her main role is to help the youngest Whitfield, Caroline, have a more normal life. She has been cloistered away at Whitfield for the whole of her first fourteen years. Now, her oldest brother, Grayson, wants to make a happier life for her than he and their brother, Travis, had.

But first, he will have to deal with the strange lights that fall from the sky over the Trinity River and their connection with the mysterious voices at the end of the road. The voices of entities that have secretly been Caroline's only friends her whole life. Are these ghostly entities dangerous? Will they want Tessa gone from Whitfield?

Will Old Gullah Woman and Preacher Man be allowed to stay on in the rundown river cabin, stirring up the waters and calling down the mysterious lights? Or will the Whitfield matriarch run them off, even after their Gullah potions kept her husband alive two years longer than the doctors could have?

Will Tessa bring harmony to the estate, or set off a competition between the brothers that has the potential to destroy the Whitfields completely?"

Dallas meets The X-Files with a Gothic wrapper? Yes please!

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites. I cant wait to see what haunting story she has for us next. This is an author that is slowly becoming one of my go to author's when I want a great haunting story. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters from the first word. This is a haunting story that is full of action and spirits. This is a faster paced story that I had a hard time putting down. The characters are connectable and brought the story to a new level for me. The twists and turns I didnt see coming and kept me turning pages. This is an engaging story that I really enjoyed and highly recommend. It is worth the pick up for sure and you dont want to miss out on this author.

I read the first book as an arc and got really excited to read book three. I really enjoyed the relationship between the main character and Caroline and Willa. As usual the mystery ghost part was amazing and is why I gravitated for Twyla Ellis to begin with. But sadly I did not enjoy this book as much as I hoped. For me the last 10 minutes was the best and made the book a 3,5⭐️

I love the paranormal, in reality and in my books! So I am pretty educated in what a "good" spook story should be. I found this one excellent. A severely haunted house. Caroline, a young teen in need of protection physically and spiritually. The brother, Grayson, protective and loving, trying to make a good life for the child. Tessa, an estate manager brought in to bring the estate back to its grandeur, and secretly to help the child have a more normal life. The addition of the Preacher Man and the Gullah Woman is a wonderfully "Old South" touch and honestly, I found them my favourite characters. There were many twists, romance and supernatural events. What more could you want? I will read books 1 and 2, which are also stand alones.

I was provided with this copy in exchange for an unpaid, honest review.

“The Voices at the End of the Road” is a suspenseful mystery of mysterious lights, bewildering characters, and a spooky mansion and was a fun read.

I have not read the previous two books from the series, but I assume that we can read these books as a standalone since the storylines are not connected. I liked “The Voices at the End of the Road,” and it gave me vibes of the classic haunted house story.

The author wrote some pretty distinctive characters in the story, and some of them were memorable. Tessa is the protagonist, and I enjoyed her in the lead. Moreover, she forms a beautiful bond with Caroline, and I adored how protective she was towards her. However, the fascinating characters were Old Gullah Woman and Preacher Man. It was interesting to see how they connected to the mysterious lights and the conflicting relationship with the Whitfields.

The author also adds some scary moments to add to the mystery that surprised me. Some moments unnerved me, like when they hear voices in Caroline’s room, when the team sees the rocker rocking, or when Tessa finds the work boots and screams. Even Leviticus gave me the creeps at times.

However, I felt the author included many people on canvas, and some of the subplots did not materialize. Moreover, even characters like Travis and Grayson did not add much value to the plot.

Apart from that, I found “The Voices at the End of the Road” to be pretty exciting and worth reading. It sparked my interest to read the rest of the books in the “Ghosts of the Big Thicket” series.

I love a good Southern Gothic mystery, and this one did not disappoint! With hints of supernatural elements that I initially took to mean the novel would have more of a horror twist (it did not), I loved following the story of Tessa as she grew into a confident woman who helps the Whitfield family time and again.

Tessa is a wonderful main character, full of awe and naivete as she navigates the huge responsibilities given to her at the Whitfield Estate. The Whitfield family serves as excellent counterparts to Tessa's command - some innocent and kind, others cold and aloof, but each with some sort of secret to keep hidden for as long as possible. Anytime a mystery includes family drama, I'm ready to love it, and while this family's drama was drawn out at times (red herrings to the main plot abound in the secrets within Whitfield Estate's walls), I appreciated how the drama unfolded.

However, I was not as enchanted with the love story elements that wove through this mystery. They felt forced most of the time, and were resolved clumsily and with no actual satisfaction. I didn't care which man Tessa chose, despite the number of them she was given to entice her throughout the story - I was much too caught up in her standing on her own two feet, solving the mystery, and being a force of good in the family. It felt antiquated for Tessa to have a romantic plot at all in this story, unnecessary to the bigger story, and an unwelcome distraction.

I missed where it said this was the third book in a series, but I was not confused a bit as I read - I assume this means each story can stand alone, which is nice in a series.

In all, I enjoyed reading this novel, and would recommend it to "cozy mystery" lovers!
