Letty Davenport is the 24 year-old adopted daughter of Lucas Davenport, a U.S. Marshal. With a master’s degree in economics and working for a US senator, she is bored easily and has been considering her options. But, before she can change her career path, the senator offers her the opportunity to do some investigative work. Teaming up with an investigator from Homeland Security, Letty finds herself in Texas where a militia group is involved with the thefts of crude oil with a nefarious goal.

John Sandford is a block-buster author and his books, featuring Lucas Davenport, are always winners. Letty has been a figure in many of these books, and now she takes center stage in The Investigator. Without a doubt, she’s her father’s daughter, with the same determination, spunk, and intelligence. The Investigator has the sharp wit, snappy dialogue, and well-conceived, well-paced plot that are the author’s trademarks. I highly recommend this newest addition on the John Sandford bookshelf.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

So glad it's about the daughter investigating this crime instead of Lucas! A lot more to the story if you ask me! She is so good at chasing the bad guys and smart! I enjoy Mr. Flowers also but it feels more new and exciting to have Letty do her magic. The adventure starts out with her and this partner from Homeland Security, they pair up and go to Texas because someone is stealing oil and they are getting a lot of money for it. They soon find out this could be deadly!

I love Stanford’s prey series! Though this character was born in that series being the daughter of the main character, knowing that series is not needed to enjoy. And if you are looking for a smart, gun toting gal, Letty is for you. The story is current and interesting as a militia is being formed to make change while written in a straight forward way giving a glimpse into both Letty perspective as well as the perpetrators. Letty is a fun, witty and sharp character that does not take any nonsense..This series will do well. Looking forward to the hinted sequel. Thank you to NetGallery and G. P. Putnam Sons publishing for this preview.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e ARC of this book. A new series that is a spin-off of the Lucas Davenport series. Great story with a fast moving plot. Lots left hanging as an obvious lead in to a new series. Interesting enough that I will keep reading. Hope Letty comes into her own as a strong female character.

Thank you to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam’s Sons for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was excited to pick this one up. Finally, Letty is getting her own story. I’ve read the entire Davenport and Flowers series, so followed her entire story and her growth while being on the sidelines which made me excited to see her center stage. She essentially reads as a woman version of Lucas Davenport, with many of his mannerisms which while I didn’t hate, I did want her to be a bit more of her own character. The story, though, hooked like Sandford’s usually do. The story was compelling, and I sped right through it, wanting to know how it would all get resolved. Letty is truly an investigator, pulling on threads, solving a mystery, and putting herself in the thick of danger. It certainly scratched the itch of a thrilling mystery, which was exactly what I was wanting, and Lucas Davenport fans will enjoy it. Hopefully, in future installments, Letty will get her due and be able to fully shine as the unique character she has the potential to be rather than the one who didn’t quite ring authentic to me, and maybe she could ditch the creep she works for too.

Was looking for a new author and decided to try John Sandford. Really liked the tale and will try more of his novels.

This page turner will have special appeal to fans of Sandford's Prey series about Lucas Davenport, since the main character is his daughter Letty, now all grown up and following in her father's footsteps, with many of his attitudes. With special relevance to current events regarding the Mexican border, in The Investigator a far right militia group has decided to express their views about immigration with a violent act, regardless of the consequences. Letty is tasked originally with finding out about the theft of oil in Texas, but soon realizes that the theft is just a means to a suspicious end. Some secondary characters are interesting, including Letty's partner John from Homeland Security, and the woman Jael who is ringleader of the militia group. This is a strong addition to Sandford's work.

I loved this book.

Lucas Davenport's daughter all grown up is exactly what you would expect her to be. A senate investigator paired up with a DHS agent to take on a militia. The suspense builds to an awesome climax. The writing, like all of John Sandford's books is excellent. His ability to lay out in clear language why some of these militias form is spot on. Also, it's been awhile since we met Letty and I loved the short flashbacks into her first life without them bogging down the storyline.

I can't wait to read the next one and hope Kaiser is a part of it.

I've read every book by John Camp and John Sandford (same person) and this is one of the best.

What a great book! I’ve always liked Letty and was curious about starting a series based on her, but she’s the right amount of smart ass and badass all rolled into one. The story was timely and interesting, the climax was can’t-put-it-down exciting, and I loved the interaction with Kaiser. Highly recommended and can’t wait for the next one!

I was given this ARC to read for an honest review on the book. Wow! What a great read that I couldn't put down. I just loved this new series by Sandford featuring Letty Davenport. Letty works for US Senator Colles but is bored with the job and decides to resign. Colles tells Letty that he doesn't want to accept her resignation and had a more interesting position for her. She would help research cases for the Department of Homeland Security and report to Colles and DHS what her findings are on these cases. Letty tells Colles that she will give it a month and then decide if this job is for her. Before you know Letty is assigned her first case and her partner, John Kaiser from DHS. They are to investigate how oil is being taken from some of the oil companies. As Letty and Kaiser begin to investigate, the case turns deadly when they find one of the oil company's managers and his wife murdered in their home. This case becomes even more complicated as they start to do a deeper dive into the finding of the missing oil. Read and find out what happens to Letty and Kaiser as they try to solve this case.

Move over Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers....there's a new girl in town. Letty Davenport, Lucas' adopted daughter is following in her father's footsteps and doing a damn fine job of it in this exciting introduction into what I hope will be a new series. Describing Letty as a chip off the old block might be a little cliche but if the shoe fits, and it does, it fits her to a tee.

The book sets right into today's happenings with an armed militia group determined to stop a caravan of immigrants at the border and Letty has to figure out how they are paying for it and how they intend to do it. With her Homeland Security partner, Kaiser, she follows the trail and ends up with a confrontation her father would be proud of.

I am so hoping for a sequel even though this one doesn't come out until April of next year. Put it on your 2022 reading list for sure!

I could barely make it through the first chapter. The fact that the main character doesn't even get a name until the last line of the first chapter is insulting. She is continually referred to as "young woman", which just gives me flash backs of getting lectures from my father. Also, the constant breaks in the chapters are jarring.

Put this one on your pre order list immediately! Lettie is certainly her father's daughter. If you love Lucas Davenport, you're gonna love this action packed, page turner. Read it in one setting and I can't wait for the next one.

I love John Sanford'd Lucas Davenport books but for some reason have a really hard time with his spinoff books (Virgil Flowers, Letty). I thought this book was just okay. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.

THE INVESTIGATOR is a new book about Letty, stepdaughter of Lucas Davenport from John Sandford’s popular ‘Prey’ series. Letty is working for a senator and is bored, ready to quit when he offers her a job as an investigator for DHS- oil is being stolen and no one knows how or why. She's paired with a DHS investigator to get to the bottom of the thefts, only to find out the problem is way bigger than anyone anticipated. A total page-turning, fast-paced thriller that leaves itself open to the possibility of a new series.

In this latest John Sandford thriller, The Investigator (G.P. Putnam's Sons 2021), the star this time isn't Minneapolis' renowned crime fighter, Lucas Davenport but his brilliant and tenacious adopted daughter, Lettie. An old 24, graduated from Stanford and now working for a U.S. Senator, she is already bored of the government job she landed partly because of her famous father but just as much because of her own storied background. When the Senator offers her a change of venue, still investigating but in the field instead of an office, she wastes no time saying yes. With a mid-career former Marine as a partner, they are tasked with finding out why crude oil is being stolen from producers and what the huge amounts of money being generated by its sale is funding. Lettie proves she possesses her adoptive father's 6th sense for connecting the dots and quickly links the money to a female-run anti-illegal-immigration militia. The question is, what are they planning that costs so much? With instinct honed of years at the side of one of the best crime fighters in the Midwest, Lettie proves herself capable, clever, and smart enough to figure out what is going on.

Why did I give it a 4/5 instead of the 5/5 it seemed headed for 80% of the story? A less than satisfying ending that didn't seem to quite fit with the facts. But I will read the sequel that is hinted at, and with relish.

Well, shame on me for missing the part of the synopsis that mentioned political extremists and their brand of ugly home grown hatred. I've loved most of this author's earlier books and requested this one on his name alone. Sadly, after all that's transpired this year, especially with this type of violence seen at the US Capital in January, I just don't have the stomach or heart to read about more of it. Yes, I truly do appreciate the people who work to bring down these low life thugs but now is the wrong time for 'this' person to read a fictional account of this fight; these types of hatred filled, extremist, anti-patriots give me the willies and a serious stomach ache. Sorry, Mr. Stanford --there was no way I could get past the beginning of chapter three. Miss Lottie was a hoot and I hope to see her in future books.
