Amazing, Awesome novella detailing Deputy Dave Kane’s life before he comes to Black Rock Falls. A most incredible and fascinating story. If you haven’t read this series what are you waiting for? Anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and Jenna’s backstory in early 2022. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I have enjoyed all the books in this series that I have read. I believe this is #13. This reads well as a stand alone (although I was confused at the beginning). This is a flashback and is the origin story of David Kane. It has romance, suspense, and more suspense. I loved it! This is how he meets Annie Parkes. I also enjoyed the glimpse we got of Shane Wolfe's life. Jenna is not in this book except as a mention. So if you are expecting Jenna you will be disappointed. I couldn't put this book down. Its only 152 pages but it is fast paced, and well worth the read. 4.5 stars

A short but revealing prequel to the Black Rocks series and it helps explain why Dave is so protective not just of Jenna but of everyone else he cares for. I’m looking forward to reading the story of Jenna before her life changed and what makes her act and think how she does.

This book was everything I had hoped it would be! If you want to know more of Kane's backstory and how he met his wife, Annie, then this book is an absolute must-read.

Would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this amazing short story

Now this is how short stories should be written, with plenty of action and with a hint of what could happen next, of course anyone who has read this series know the characters in the book, but this is past history into one of the main character

Very insightful and informative and your heart just breaks when you are reading it

Can’t wait to read the next in this amazing series

Being a sniper wasn't a job that surrounded you with friends and acquaintances but operative Ninety-eight-H had got used to that and he wasn't very sociable anyway! When he is pulled from an only partly successful mission to find and rescue a recently kidnapped American citizen he isn’t impressed. He is however used to following orders and soon finds himself on the trail of the young woman who unbeknownst to him is about to change his life.

This is a novel you get the feeling D.K. Hood has been itching to write since book one in the excellent Detectives Kane and Alton series! For those familiar with this set of novels some of the storyline is already known but this definitely fleshes everything out even though it is only 150 pages long.

I am not a big fan of military fiction but it was vital here to show how and why Dave Kane became the man Sheriff Jenna Alton and Black Rock Falls have come to rely on. Even with some idea of what would happen it was a pleasure to read from start to finish. I selfishly hope we will get similar storylines covering both Jenna and Shane Wolfe either in the shortened format or as part of a full length novel.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers.  Although short this has made the series even more of a favourite and I loved it.

This is one novella I have been anxiously waiting for. To find out more about one of my favourite characters David Kane. This deals more with his past before he became a deputy and met Jenna.

The first part had me with chills as you are finally going to find out more and the writing was magestic. I have long wondered about Annie and his work life before his move to Black Rock Falls

Again in this you see the stubbornness of Dave. He is who he is and you still see protectiveness as well as his usual brash attitude.

Annie is also fun to read about as she seems to be a lot more independent than what I ever thought. She may be scared but she has a great ability to not show it.

With Shane showing up you could see so much that is good about him. I love the fact that he shows a lot more of the personality ways. It was breaking my heart reading about him and his life.

The story was so well thought out and the pace was amazing. While the book is shorter than what I am used to from this author it shows a great ability to work with a character who definitely has changed based on the books. Going back and showing a less refined character than what he is in the later books had to be hard and it is a great accomplishment to show a regression of Dave.

The story made me feel great fear for both Dave and Annie and so much sympathy for Shane. It was hard to read as it was an emotional read that really hit all the spots for me.

I think that seeing Dave and Shane who are two of my favourite characters written. The author has such an amazing ability to make you feel that you are part of the family. I think that seeing a backstory makes the rest of the series more amazing than it already is as you get to understand the characters in a more intimate way.

The story is emotionally draining I felt like I was on a rollercoaster and I didn't know when or if I would ever want to get off. It is one of the best books I have read this year and it had such an amazing story that shows the true man that Dave Kane was and is.

This book made me love this character even more.

Wow! Great book! I definitely liked to see how it all began! I've only read one book from this series, now two including thus one! I loved them both! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, blood shed and was pretty hard core! But what a Herat pounder! Pour Dave!! My heart broke for him! Well now I have to go back and read all the books from this series that are out! lol I'm really liking this series! Can't wait to read more! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me! A big thank you to DK Hood for your amazing words! Can't wait for more! I'm glad I found this new to me author! Thank you!

Love the covers for this series! This one is novella length and it gives you a bigger background on Kane and where he came from.

What did I like? So we finally get the big scoop on Kane and his heart break love with Annie. I find it amazing that we never learn Kane’s true name only learn the depth of his skill. Dave is a sniper stuck after a mission goes awry, he is used to get back a woman kidnapped from an embassy. Right place wrong time scenario Annie and Dave help each other out of an impossible situation.

Would I recommend or buy? This was a great look into Dave’s character and it gives us a bit of background. I enjoyed reading and people who love the series will love it. Four stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
