I really liked the premise of this book. Like so many women Enid wanted more. Being from mainland China Enid was envious of the It girls but at what costs?

I think the footnotes helped but there was a gap in understanding some of the words and references but I liked where it was going. It was a a fresh book but I struggled to root for Enid.

I received a copy of Behind the Bid from NetGalley for my opinion.

The premise of this book caught my eye as luxury auctions is a world unfamiliar to me. I liked the introduction to an unknown world and a society of people often removed from the regular working classes.

However, (and this may be me not understanding the cultural context) I really struggled with Enid. As a main character it was hard to root for her. You wanted to see her succeed but at the same time some of her own thoughts and actions make you as the reader recoil.

I think the concept was fresh, but the characters were a struggle to invest in.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this.

The first thing I like to point out, was reading this on the Kindle was a struggle, as every few sentences the words "NOT, COPY, READER, ADVANCED, FORE RESALE" would appear. Each word would appear randomly in the paragraphs and sentences. As a result, I had to read this on the Netgalley App.

Now onto the story. As an Australian born Chinese (yes, I have to point this out), I found this an interesting read. While I was born only raised to read and speak English, my Chinese is limited. The footnotes added, was something useful. And I would like to point out very useful to those who don't understand some of the Chinese words or anything else Chinese related (e.g. Apps).

This story follows the life of Enid, as she navigates the international auction house, her relationships with her boyfriend, friends and colleagues, from those who are allies and those who backstabs. Along the way, Enid learns about the person she wants to be.

This was awful! I couldn't make it through the first two chapters without wanting to roll over and die. The main character was unlikeable and annoying, and I could not deal with it.

I tried very hard to read this book. I was really excited about getting an ARC of a self-published book but I struggled to read it. The entire copy is riddled with notes and prompts that interferes greatly with the reading experience. Would request the publisher to please upload a better copy for a smooth reading experience!
Thanks!

Hi, there is a problem with the KIndle download- text that might be otherwise in the header and footer is mixed in with the story, randomly, on every page. I'm trying to read it but wanted to alert you to this issue because it's quite challenging and may discourage reviews of what is otherwise and interesting and fun read.
