Two strangers meet on the subway by happen chance who could not be any more opposite of each other. When their subway encounter goes viral they are thrust into each other's lives and can't shake the other, especially when his cousin and her best friend wind up falling in love. Over the course of a summer Franny and Hayes begin to slowly fall in love against the backdrop of New York City. This is a slow burn rom-com that utilizes New York City as a key element in building the romance - love this! While there were often elements that felt slightly unrealistic, I loved how Franny and Hayes brought out the best in each other. The sideline characters were also really run however, I could have done without the "secret sister" element to the story -- with everything between our main characters it just felt out of place!

I absolutely loved this book!! It has the perfect mix of fun, supportive best friends, a horrenduous (yet funny) meet cute, and laugh-out-loud humour. It had me hooked from the first page as we meet Franny and Hayes on the subway in New York City. A horribly embarrassing meet cute happens and ultimately leads them down a slow-burn romance.

There wasn't much steam in this one but I didn't mind it! The humour and writing made up for that and honestly, I didn't really even notice it not there.

I did feel the ending was rushed a tad but overall, it didn't take away from the story. I sped read this one in under 24 hours! It reads fast! You won't notice the time melting away :)

In A New York Minute manages to be both a perfect rom com, complete with a wholly original "meet-cute", but also a love letter to New York City. This book made me remember why I fell in love with New York City in the first place. From the main characters meeting on a packed subway car, to their many bagel stops, to the tiny cafes in the East Village, and their walk across the Brooklyn bridge - New York City almost becomes a third character in their love story. The characters are so well crafted and likable, and the story such a compelling read, I may have been late for work (twice) because I couldn't put it down!

Disasterous meet-cute - Check
Best Friends you want in real life - Check
Laugh out loud humor - Check
Rom-Com that you won’t be able to put down - Check

Kate Spencer’s first Rom-Com is a home run! This book had me roped in from the first chapter where we meet Franny and Hayes in a most awful, cringeworthy and awkward meet-cute. There was so much about this book that kept me from being able to put it down.

What I absolutely loved -
The strong ensemble cast of ride or die friends both Franny and Hayes had in their corner. The type of friends every person needs in their life - the ones who cry with you, laugh with and at you, and support you regardless.
The awkwardness of Hayes - not every person can think quickly on their feet when falling in love, and it just shows his human side.

The ending was a bit rushed for me, but that didn’t stop me from absolutely loving the book. I would have loved to have read an epilogue.

After reading so many Halloween-type books, I was in desperate need of something light, easy to read, and fun. This book delivered! The story was sucked me in and was easy to follow, the characters were likable, and I feel like it transported me right back to NY.

THE CUTENESS!!!
The meet-cute— no spoiler to be found here, read the book! — in this story and the author truly engaging voice made it near impossible to put the book down!
The most endearing mess of a woman finds herself entangled repeatedly with her total opposite made of the sternest stuff in a series of random meetings through a movie worthy New-York setting.

Add to this a wholesome supporting cast, best friends, family, quality witty banter, an alluring portrayal of New York: this adorable and lighthearted story was essentially an ode to friendship and happenstance.

In A New York Minute was solid quality rom-com.
As a rom-com, the love theme is definitely there but the slow burn romance between Franny and Hayes was too much on the light side for me, the focus was clearly given to both love interests singularities and introspection than their burning want for each other. I loved both characters but their contemplative prospect about one another was damn near infuriating. I'm so thankful for their respective pushy friends.

The lack of steam was fine in the end, except that I somehow realize I need the steam outlet of genre romance (yes, the banging) to get truly satisfied (I said what I said). The few times anything remotely sexual was happening in the book it was merely mentioned in passing, for example, the heroine would think about how the hero's touch at the small of her back "felt so wildly erotic, like having his hand between her legs". So characters had fleeting dirty thoughts but nothing more on the pages. What kind of literary edging torment is this?
Franny and Hayes do get between the sheets but on page it's all very polite, rom-com-ish, I guess. Not exactly fade to black but nothing that would make it awkward if you were watching that lovemaking scene on tv with your parents.

I realized halfway through my reading that it wouldn't reach the steam levels my romance reader-self craves but the charming characters, the burgeoning romance, the humor, the scenery and the inviting voice of the author made it more than worth my while. Satisfying even.

I will only regret the bit of drama of the inevitable third act conflict. I realize romance fiction warrants some fantasy but sometimes I struggle to turn off my cynicism and it's a whole lot of stupid grand gestures. I don't want to unnecessarily reveal what happened but the micro time jumps and the following "grand gesture" from Hayes was over the top ridicule to me. I would have been perfectly content with a simple ILY back.

This fun rom-com is the ultimate ode to New York. I’ve never been there, but this book definitely moved it up on my bucket list!
The characters are charming and the setting is 💯.

This was an easy quick read. I like the diversity of the characters. Even though it was fiction, it could have actually happened since most people are quick to record and post. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

SIGH.

I really could not put this one down and I was rather bothered that my schedule was not allowing for me to just sit and read! #InANewYorkMinute by Kate Spencer reads just like a rom-com movie - the perfect blend of humor and sweetness, all wrapped up with plenty of endearing awkwardness, magnetic attraction, and a sweet journey of self-discovery. Fanny and Hayes have an adorably mortifying 'meet-cute' for the social media era and their suddenly intertwining lives are left trying to make sense of the weirdness - and could it be...attraction? - between them. I love the way Spencer writes with such seamless inclusivity in her cast of characters & the NYC setting and authentic 'friends that are family' dynamics kept me completely invested. The character development within both Fanny and Hayes hooked me in as they each work through their own paths with family, work, friends and discover what it is they really are (& are not) looking for in someone else. Love really does feel easy and comfortable when it just fits between two people and I adored the way Spencer captures that in this slow-burn, modern romance. Sometimes rom-coms rely heavily on the steam and I sort of appreciated that this one really built up the connection and that that fueled the attraction. It's a 4-star read for me and I look forward to seeing what Kate Spencer writes next!

I absolutely did not want to put this book down. The writing style was so good that I didn’t want to stop reading. I love that you could see who Fran and Hayes were separately instead of having an entire book dedicated to just their relationship. Personal details were mixed in beautifully and subtly.

There was great sexuality and gender diversity and representation

Every time Fran and Hayes were together, their connection was tangible. You could feel the electricity. These are two of the most organically written characters I’ve read in a long time.

The third act scene (you know what I’m talking about) felt the tiniest bit forces, but you also knew it was coming.

One of my only major critiques is that the final act fell a tad flatter but it was still pretty solid.

Overall, reading this felt like a breath of fresh air. I loved it!

This was a read-it-in-one-sitting, could-see-them-making-a-movie, rom-com for me. And the perfect chaser book after pushing through some recent heavier reads. Lighthearted and sweet, but not without some tension and challenges to overcome. The meet-cute was disastrous and fun, although a little reminiscent of Talia Hibbert's "Take a Hint, Dani Brown."

I loved all and found myself rooting for them to find both professional and relationship success. The main players, Franny and Hayes, were very root-worth for different reasons, but Ms. Spencer also developed a really rich and enjoyable supporting cast of characters with some mini-relationship arcs. It was nice to see that play out within the pages of *this* book, when many authors might have backburnered and "saved" those in order to create a series. NYC was it's own prominent character, and the author absolutely created an immersive vibe. I could totally see this as an ensemble cast rom-com / sitcom, a la "You've Got Mail" or "Younger."

I just added this to my Top 10 books of 2021 list. I LOVED IT!

From the very first chapter, to the end, it had me literally laughing out loud. Franny was such a mess and so funny, I can definitely relate to her. Then you’ve got Hayes that had it all together….they were so different. But they had an immediate connection and it was so fun to read.

The two (Franny and Hayes) meet on a subway in New York. He helps her when she’s having a hard time during the ride, not thinking they’d ever see each other again. But his kindness catches the attention of the news and their paths cross again… and again.

It was a delight to read! I hope they make this one into a movie. It’d be the perfect romcom. I wish I could tell you the parts I found the funniest, but I just don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

Definitely add this one to your reading list. 🗽😍 I’ll read anything from Kate Spencer from now on.

A very cute rom com about two strangers, Franny and Hayes, who meet on the subway under unfortunate circumstances. Specifically, Franny’s dress gets caught in the subway door and Hayes comes to the rescue offering her his coat. The interaction goes viral and despite the two being so different and living in a city of 8 million people, they keep running into each other. This book was light and a pretty quick read. My favorite part of the book was the friendship between Franny, Chloe and Lola and between Hayes and Eleanor. The support and banter within the groups of friends definitely made the plot more interesting, especially because I think the steam and intimacy was lacking between the main couple. Overall, I’m giving this book four stars because I think it was too much of a slow burn and preferred the second half way more than the first. Still definitely worth the read, especially if you like books set in NYC. Thanks Forever and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute RomCom about two people who have one memorable meet cute filled with a bunch of misunderstandings that leads them to inevitably fall for eachother awkwardness.

Hayes isn’t your typical romance lead and I love that the author made this head of a huge company an awkward, misunderstood, adorkable man rather than an alpha male who isn’t short on confidence and has an endless list of women in his little black book. The author made him relatable and attainable rather than a fantasy and it was refreshing to have a lead like that in this book. Franny is your typical girl next door, with the heart of gold who will be there for you at a drop of a hat. She was sweet and kind and made the perfect counterpart to Hayes. Together they were too perfect for words.

For me, the one thing that was missing was the spark between Hayes and Franny in the beginning. Their connection was slow to start and at times and their scenes were few and far between. It wasn’t until the halfway mark where it started to pick up for me and I started falling for Hayes and Franny together. They truly were electric and fun and I wish some of that chemistry was in the beginning of the book. Overall this book was adorable with moments that made you swoon, but it took so long to get to this point. For those who are looking for a slow burn, loveable RomCom, this checks all those boxes. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Pub for this ARC.

This was a cute RomCom that was also a love letter to New York. I loved that the romantic interest wasn’t smooth and suave even though he had everything going for him. This book had a good amount of Diversity in it, which we love to see. It is exactly the book you want when you’re in the mood for the classic boy meets girl, funny, heart warming, needs to be made into a Hallmark. Def read and I look forward to the next book by Kate Spencer.

Well done, Kate Spencer! I enjoyed every minute of this book. Super cute story, laugh out loud moments, and of course- romance! The scene where our two love birds met each other was hilarious. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

2.5 stars

Set in NYC, we have Franny who is a recently laid off interior designer. This book started off with a hilarious meet cute on the subway between her and businessman Hayes. That scene totally hooked me in. This turns into a bit of an office romance as they end up working together. I really enjoyed the first quarter of the book and thought it was so funny. But over time I lost interest.

I felt there were too many scenes where Franny and Hayes were with other people instead of together. Their chemistry was strong in the beginning but unfortunately it kind of fizzled out to me as the book progressed. It felt forced instead of natural. I also didn't like how Franny lied to Hayes about her job or the conflict towards the end.
