This is a great helpful book to help first-timers raise backyard chickens. There's a lot that goes into raising chickens and this is a great tool.

Interesting book, although it is too technical. Lots of information, would have been great to include photos of the different breeds, so it would have been easier to identify each one.

Fabulous book for people thinking about having chickens in thier yard/ garden, of which i have for a long time now.

Not only do we have a plentiful amount of helpful huints and tips for starting up, but also pitfalls and things to avoid.

There is also a helpful section on the different types of chicken and which one would suit you the best, depending on what you are looking for and wanting to achieve.

Myself i want to keep chickens because i want fresh eggs, so Chapter 4 was very helpful to me.

The author also explains thier background and why her information is relatable, because she has done all this herslef already and essentially learning from her mistakes and benefiting from her experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would wholly recommend this for anyone who is thinking about keeping chickens.

If you know nothing about raising Backyard Chickens, here's an opportunity to discover how, why, and if you should contemplate raising these endearing birds.

I'm no more planning on raising chickens in my yard than I was pigs, but just as with that book, I read this one out of curiosity, and I was not disappointed. It's a fun book, full of useful and even unexpected information for anyone planning on producing their own eggs. Of course, you will need a chicken for that; God knows I've tried without one and I've never got it to work!

Don't be put off by the cartoon cover: this is a serious book and contains lots of useful information, along with tips and nested hints, and you won't have to shell out a lot to buy it..... Unfortunately it seems to be available only on Amazon, a corporation I refuse to have anything to do with for a variety of reasons, so I guess the yolk's on me as they say.

The chapters are as follows:

The Basics of Raising Backyard Chickens
The Science of Raising Chickens
Training Your Chickens
All About Eggs
Special mention - Chicks!
Learning to Source the Best Eggs
Maintaining the Pecking Order
Grooming

It oughtn't to be necessary to remind readers that chickens are living and sensitive animals which will require frequent attention along with attendant watering, feeding, and cleaning. They require safe and comfortable housing and close observation for potential health issues. It is not a part time job or to be approached with an amateurish state of mind. It's essential anyone planning on engaging in this pursuit should read a good book on the topic, and preferably more than one, and be prepared to put in the hard work. If you don't, you will have egg on your face....

There are issues you may not have considered if you've been idly thinking about getting a few chickens for the back yard: such as considering local bye-laws and your neighbors, and there are concerns that even were you cocksure about this, you may not have had these make it through the chicken mesh of your mind, such as bullying among chickens, as well as potential problems introducing new birds to an established flock, and so on. If you plan on selling the eggs, or you plan on exhibiting your chickens, there are tips to help you make those plans fly, too. It even teaches you how to pick up chicks - although that might not be exactly what you had in mind....

I personally have no experience raising chickens, so I can give only my opinion, but I'm no dumb cluck, and it seemed to me that this book was competent, serious, appropriate and a great place to start. It felt like it would get a person well on the right path to having success with this project and so I commend it as a worthy read.

A comprehensive book, written in a way that makes it very easy to read, for people interested in raising their own chickens.
The only negative is that sometimes the author takes on a too technical and repetitive tone, for example, when she explains the anatomy of chickens and the process of egg formation.
I would have liked her to delve more deeply into the types of food that we should give them, especially homemade food and what kind of food hurts them. For example, when talking about the breeding of dogs it is specified that for no reason they should be given chocolate or raisins. I believe that information of this type would increase the quality of the book.

I struggled with this book.

The front cover led me to believe the book's intended audience was teens and young adults. It isn't.

I also struggled with the author's tone and language. I don't believe everyone can know everything about a topic, yet the author makes statements in the first few pages that feel... almost religious, and unquestionable. I found it offputting.

I've raised chickens over the last few decades, for myself but more for others. So, I've learned a lot about backyard chickens, their care and maintenance, and in several countries/languages.

So it surprised me to find information about getting chickens litter trained (??) here, as well as how chickens can lay eggs year round.

I'd hoped to learn something new from this book, and use it as a reference material for my kids, so they could feel confident raising their own chickens. But without images, the tone and feel of the book, and the odd recommendations makes this a no-go for me.

I gave the book three stars, because I feel every book starts at three stars (just for getting written and published, a feat of itself!). I then add or delete stars, and strongly dislike giving anything less than three, unless it's a warning to others.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley and publisher, for the opportunity.

The cover of this book caught my attention right away. I love the colours and the graphic that were used. I have always wanted backyard chickens so that drew me in next.
The author did a wonderful job of providing all kinds of information to educate those like me that are interested in having chickens. I feel though that those that already have chickens would benefit greatly from what the author has shared. I don't think any subject was left out. Its a good practical guide that I would recommend.
I only gave it 4 stars though because of the lack of pictures or diagrams, or even some drawings, that would have fit in so nicely along with the information provided inside. It does not make sense why this part of a guide was left out.

Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Raising Backyard chickens
Wow Who knew that chickens were trademarked brand named? This book has a lot of interesting information about everything chicken related and gives some sound advice. Even though a thorough description of the character of some of the popular breeds was given, I think a picture or two of the breeds mentioned would have helped, but maybe I’m being picky because all in all this book would help anyone who was thinking of raising chickens from start to finish A good practical guide book I would definitely recommend

I have had backyard chickens for almost 10 years now, and have had as little as four chickens to as many as 35, so I kind of feel I know what I need to know about them, but it is always good to read up on what others have to say.

This is a picture-less book filled with good and nebulous advice. Some of it might be subjective, so I will state what bothered me about this book, as well as what worked.

The book is well organized, with most of the sections you would need to get your first chickens. However, with no pictures, you would have to look up the breeds discussed. There is also information about what you need in a coop, as well as what to look for in a chick.

There are bits that I disagree with. Because chickens don't have sphincter muscles they can not be potty trained. They can not hold in their poop or pee to run to the nearest litter box. The authors proposal of putting them in the litter box, when you see the about to poop or pee and then reward them seems to be an exercise in futility, however she says it works, so I do not doubt that she. has managed to somehow make it work. However, I'm not sure how.

The other issue I have is with her advice to give chickens artificial lighting so they will lay all year round. She claims it is good for the chicken. From what I have read, making them lay through the winter, actually shortens their life. Chickens, like humans, are born with a set amount of eggs inside, and if you force them all out, then that is all you will get.

Other than that, she had good advice on hen pecked well, hens, and how to save them from killing each other.

It is a pity about the lack of pictures, though.
