Spooky season is around the corner and this would be a great gift for your Dracula loving friends. This is the inspiration of Dracula, Anne Rice and pretty much every piece of vampire literature that followed.
.
I love old gothic tales and this one published in 1872 is the perfect precursor to vampire stories that I love so much.

Thank you #NetGalley and #PushkinPress for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy of Carmilla in exchange for an honest review!

This was a pretty solid gothic read. I enjoyed reading a vampire story with a lead female vampire character. Considering this was written prior to Bram Stoker's Dracula, I found this to be fascinating. Carmilla is a beautiful and mysterious young woman who Laura, the protagonist, is immediately drawn to. It was easy to see where the story was going but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

This was a quick read, only 160 pages which I believe was the perfect length to tell this story. I would recommend to anyone that enjoys vampire/gothic reads.

Carmilla is the original vampire story, steeped in the sexual tension between two young women and gothic romance. Cute retelling of our one and only Dracula.

I've always been a huge fan of Dracula since I was a kid so seeing the tag line the cult classic that inspired it I instantly downloaded Carmilla, and while I did like this the writing can be a little confusing at times and that definitely spoiled some of my enjoyment.

I can totally see all the elements in here that Bram Stoker used to create Dracula, and it was a treat to read and discover all the little bits and pieces although this is short I'd say anyone who loved Dracula will really appreciate this.

Thank you so much to netgalley for the E-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I love Carmilla, and it was a pleasure getting to read this deluxe edition of the classic. I first read the book as an audiobook, so it was a different experience reading it as text and I definitely struggled a bit with the language. But that's part of reading classics for me, and I still enjoyed this original lesbian fiction and the paths it paved in the vampire genre of sapphic stories.

The cover of this book alone was enough to draw me in and the story itself was dark and interesting and kept me reading. However, the writing and the use of language I did struggle with.

I am someone who enjoys reading Shakespeare but with this I found myself struggling and rereading lines. Although it got better as I continued and got used to the writing and language style it did tarnish the read somewhat. I can't help but think that I may of enjoyed it more in audiobook format?

As a result, it was too slow paced for me with the difficulties with the language and it took away from the story. I did however appreciate the lesbian aspect of it which made it more interesting taking into consideration when it was written.
