Legend of the New World Origins, by Vern Watkins, is a richly imaginative,YA serial. I actually didn't realize that it was a serial and wasn't thrilled with the lack of an ending. I appreciated that the book highlights what a nation, that's starting its decent into a totalitarian regime, might look like. Plus I liked most of the main characters and how they evolved throughout the book.
2047 and American freedom is under assault. A supposedly all-American girl carries out the murder of more than half a million people at Super Bowl LXXXI. First responders and the military have retreated from much of the country and gangs have filled the void. But America refuses to quit and the FBI has an undercover operator manning security for the top gang. Then there's Jackson Okafor, ex-Navy Seal, who wants to be part of returning America to its peaceful state. Unfortunately, a senator and two seedy brothers have their own ideas and will stop at nothing to destroy anyone who questions their control.
