Bad Ideas was such an unexpected treat of a book. Filled with quirky characters, family drama/struggles, and a small town Canadian setting, this was a delightful read. Definitely not a fast paced novel, but the unique storytelling kept me turning the pages.

This book is about growing up poor in a small town with no real options and only bad ideas. The best character in the whole book was Mercy, the little girl. Everyone else was a run down hot mess of a character just trying to survive the day and maybe find a little bit of love in their crappy situation. It was both a depressing and quirky read. I think it was a little relatable because we all have ideas that we think are great but turn out to be bad. I could relate to the main character (Tammy?) in her exasperation of the whole situation - her life, her family, her town, just everything.

I received this audiobook free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I listened to this during a mid-length car ride. It was about five hours worth of listening, which is kind of nice. I find audiobooks that are 12+ hours long hard to get through right now since I don’t have a commute.

Overall, this was ok. Not an earth shattering story. Entertaining. Not super heavy. The small town Canada setting is kind of enjoyable. The narrator did a great job with the Canadian accents. The one thing I found annoying was the book is broken up into parts (chapters?), but within these parts are all of what sounds like subheadings, and some of them were super short (like 2-3 minutes). I felt like this made it really choppy and seemed to break up the story. Not sure if this would have bugged me as much if I read the book, but it didn’t work for me in the audiobook.

Quick listen. Entertaining. Would probably recommend it to those who want a short listen to fill a five hour drive.

Firstly, I liked the narrator. The narration was subtle and the voice pleasant.
I nearly stopped listening to this story because it was so depressing. However, I put it away for a few days and came back to it and am glad I did. The tale IS depressing. There’s barely an ounce of joy, but it is well written and I actually quite enjoyed it. Just don’t expect a happy ending

I love the quirkiness of Canadian novels. Which is just a reflection of the quirkiness of Canadian life. The crazy stunt of jumping the river is a terrific climactic event for a novel.

I’m not sure what I was expecting out of this novel after reading a brief description, but it wasn’t this. This story is both sad, funny, and moving.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ALC.

Recommended for: those looking for short novel with a lot of depth.

A great quick beach read! With a name like Bad Ideas, I don't think you'd be misled into thinking this is a fairy tale, in fact, it reads almost like an anti-fairy tale. What happens when you are stuck in an oppressive system without support and stop critically thinking for even one moment? The chaos and destructiveness of it all, the need to constantly stay quick on your feet, for the very real repercussions of small-town politics and behavior will quickly catch up to you if you don't. This is the story of three generations of women, each reacting quite differently to the cycle they're caught in.

Sometimes love just doesn't make sense. Trudy doesn't believe in love. Claire still pines for her one true love. Tammy can't find a way to love so she leaves. Set in 1970's Ontario, Canada, this book is about a lot of bad ideas and the life that comes from dealing with them. When small town girl Trudy meets Jules, an aspiring daredevil, caution goes to the wind.

It was really interesting to hear the book in alternating points of view but maybe 7 characters was too much. I had to rewind a few times on the chapters. It might also be because the chapters were not labeled with the character - just part numbers. I lived how it kept their stories real and honest and we see how they intersected. The characters were well developed and their relationships while difficult were relatable.

Bad ideas – written by missy marston & narrated by Aurora brown.

Thank you to ECW Press & netgalley for advance cope of this audio book in exchange for my honest review..

To be honest I feel lost with this one. I never really got it i think it was a bad idea to promote as anyway funny...

Chapters with sub chapters really confusing. Constantly jumping characters points of view and I was going to give up after chapter 5 or 6 but I did think I must persist. Sadly it wasn’t for me.

This became a sad and at times distressing story. Not one chuckle. Sorrow for a 5 year old child and her aunt and family Lots of sadness and despite continuing to the end, I still didnt feel like it was finished. And it was very odd.
Not sure what I was missing.
Not one for me! Never once funny but once again thanks for the opportunit for this audio book

Narration was good. Despite weird sound effects.

Wouldn't recommend to my friends but I can see lots have enjoyed.

Will post on my goodreads and copy links asap.

We all make mistakes when it comes to love. It seems the women in Claire's house are pros at it.
Fun story about how life can change in an instance and we don't always get to pick who we fall for. Characters are relatable, You end routing for them at the end, which is a bit of a surprise.
