I loved this book! A much quicker read than anticipated because I couldn't put it down! The whole visions concept has been done so many times but this book did it in a new way I really enjoyed along with the other psychic abilities brought in. I was quick to get sucked in and root for Hayden, I'm so happy with how this story and its characters developed and hope there's a sequel coming!

An interesting YA mystery with a twinge of the supernatural. The sarcastic, chip-on-her-shoulder main character can see a person’s past, and is roped into helping find a kidnapped classmate who can see glimpses of the future. I am way past the target age for this novel, but I was entertained nonetheless and would have loved it when I was young teenager.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Overall I rated this 4 stars on goodreads. I actually really enjoyed this book oddly for it not being the type I usually go for. I do think Shani Michelle does deserve a pat on the back for her writing in this.

You Should Have Seen This Coming by Shani Michelle follows Cassie and Hayden, two teenage psychics. Told in alternating viewpoints between the two, Cassie who has been kidnapped, and Hayden who is trying to solve the kidnapping.

Cassie can see the future, just like her mom who died when she was a baby. She saw visions of her boyfriend falling in love with another girl, and foolishly thought that was as bad as it would get. But, she has suddenly begun having visions of herself in danger, and they just keep coming, no matter what she does to try and avoid her fate. So when the kidnapper’s finally capture Cassie it’s no surprise that they tell her “You should have seen this coming.”

Hayden can see the past, but only if she is touching an object. She uses her power to blackmail her classmates and teachers, quickly becoming the most hated student at her new school. But Hayden doesn’t care because her classmates are all terrible people who think they can get away with anything. She is just giving them what they deserve. When Cassie is kidnapped, however, two of her classmates want her help, and Hayden will have to try and use her power for good.

Michelle and I basically started off on the wrong foot immediately, because I could not stand her writing style. It really set the tone for the rest of my reading experience. You know that cringy, forced acting in teen dramas, that is what the writing in this book felt like to me. It felt really forced at times, and the dialogue was often cringy and so unrealistic. I kept reading hoping that the story would make up for the bad writing, but it did not.

The premise of this story was so promising, but the execution really failed. The characters were so poorly written that I could not have cared less about what was happening to them. They were all so one-dimensional. There’s the cool girl who thinks she’s better than everyone else, the one nice girl in a school full of bullies, and the spoiled rich boy with a heart of gold who manages to win over the girl that thinks she’s better than everyone. There was absolutely no character growth or development, and the character’s all lacked chemistry so their relationships with one another were painful to experience. On top of the bad characters, the story was also just unbelievably boring. It has psychics, a kidnapping, blackmail, drug deals, it should not have been boring! But it was.

It feels really weird for me to finish this review without a single good thing to say about this book. This is not the reviewer I usually am; I always can find at least one positive thing to share about a book, but not so for You Should Have Seen This Coming. Apologies, but the only thing I can say for this one is “just skip it.”

3.5/5 stars rounded to 4.

This YA supernatural thriller has a Nancy Drew-esque twist.

The main premise: Quintessential outsider Hayden has visions of the past she uses to exploit her rich classmates, and popular girl Cassie (cute allusion) has visions of the future that have recently taken a turn for the worse. After Cassie is kidnapped, Hayden has to make use of her visions to solve the mystery before time runs out.

The best parts? You Should Have Seen This Coming's combination of YA fantasy and mystery is refreshing.
Its characters are based in high school stereotypes, but subvert expectations through surprising depth of character. The dialogue is fresh and its twists were genuinely surprising.

The meh bits? There were gaps in the magic system I hope to see explained in follow-up novels. There were times that the plot points felt forced and like random or unnatural progressions.

Think psychic, sarcastic, Nancy Drew.

School blackmailer extraordinaire, Hayden is roped into helping Audra and Brody find their missing friend Cassie. Pretty basic concept, except Hayden has visions of the past when she touches things and Cassie has visions of the future. A future in which she sees herself get kidnapped and her ex Brody falling for Hayden.

This was so intriguing; I was hooked from the get-go. Loved the banter and Hayden’s sarcasm. The writing flowed well, great descriptions.

I loved that it was a mystery within a mystery, not only are you wondering who took Cassie, you’re also wondering how/what/where/when these powers came about.

The suspense was fabulous. I was turning the pages as if peeking around a corner to see if the monster was going to pop out at me.

One of my favorite parts was that there was no animosity between Cassie and Hayden over Brody. Cassie had the maturity to understand that Hayden wasn’t “stealing” Brody from her and that sometimes relationships just don’t work out and that it sucks, but it is, ultimately, for the best.

I just wish there was a bit more about the gifts, I’m assuming this will be a standalone, so we will never get to fully know how Hayden & Cassie got their powers, kind of a bummer.

I also felt the Hayden/Brody thing was kind of rushed towards the end, maybe a few more intense scenes with googly eyes while tracking down clues.

Overall this was a fun ride with twists and turns and witty comebacks!
Check it out, when it hits shelves, 4/12/22!

A big thanks to the Publisher & NetGalley for gifting me a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING by Shani Michelle

★★★★★

Drink: McDonald’s Diet Coke

Okay hear me out - first of all I think we can all agree that McDonald’s coke is by far the best (seriously - what do they put in it?!). Second of all, if I was needing to find my missing friend and solve a mystery, I would just live off of that stuff, and I feel like Hayden would totally vibe with that too

Review: THIS BOOK!!!! I was so excited when I got the e-ARC and then for whatever reason couldn’t get to it for a little while. Once I finally sat down and started reading it I literally could not put it down and finished it in one sitting (oops)

The characters + the mystery + the romance = actual perfection. I loved the different POVs and getting to experience the mystery from different angles, I honestly don’t think I have ever read a story like that before.

If you loved the Good Girls Guide to Murder series then make sure to add this story to your TBR because I think you will love it as much as I did! Comes out on April 12th!

You Should Have Seen This Coming by Shani Michelle is a fast past mystery/magical realism book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was a one-day read for me because the pace is rapid.

The novel is dual POV between two eleventh-grade girls, Hayden and Cassie. Both of the girls have a remarkable ability to see visions. Cassie sees the future, and Hayden can see the past when she touches an object. Both of the girls only have visions randomly.

The mystery comes into play when Cassie is kidnapped! Her friends are working hard to find her before it is too late.

I plan to purchase this book for my high school library. This book reminded me of Karen McManus' or Maureen Johnson's books. A fast-paced, clean mystery that will keep my students interested.

A few times, the switch between characters did not make for a smooth time transition, but overall, this did not take away from the book's enjoyment.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the Arc in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars/5

First off, thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan for a digital ARC of this book! It was a fun read that definitely kept me hooked. As a fan of science-fiction/fantasy, I loved the premise of a thriller with two characters who had visions: one with visions of the past, and one with visions of the future. Hayden and Cassie are two sides of the same coin, yet are complete opposites of each other, making it interesting to get the story from both of their points of view. I have read many YA thrillers, so it was refreshing to read one with a supernatural aspect to make it stand out a bit more. I also liked how while the story had a happy ending, it wasn’t crazy unrealistic. I think that this was great for a debut novel, and would be a great read for younger YA readers, or for someone looking for a more simple read.

This book was a really fun and enjoyable read. The premise was unique and engaging in a way that was unexpected, and it felt unlike many other mystery/who dunnit type novels that have permeated the YA book space in recent years. One of the things I appreciated most about this story was its pace. It felt like it moved just fast enough to keep you interested and excited while not getting bogged down into unnecessary ruminations. With regards to characterization, I did enjoy the main characters and the way the complex romance developed felt authentic despite it being built in more unrealistic circumstances. One thing I would have appreciated was seeing more time and exploration for Cassie. Going into the book based off of the description I was under the impression that it would be an evenly balanced story that was led by both her and Hayden. However, the majority of the novel and it's plot development focused on Hayden and her perspective. I think there could have been a lot more growth and time spent with Cassie, even if that meant changing some aspects of the plot to accommodate for giving her more space. Particularly as a woman of color I think she could have offered a really interesting perspective on being someone "gifted". Overall it was an entertaining experience that stood out from other mysteries with its supernatural aspects.

Two Girls with psychic visions, too many people with deep dark secrets. When one of the girls goes missing, the other is determined to find her, but in a town where everyone is rich, everyone is privileged and everyone has something to hide, finding her might be more difficult than expected.

A high stakes YA thriller that is both fast paced and fun! This is a great quick read that has me engrossed from page one.

This was such a well written book! I found the main character super relatable and compelling, and while I didn't share many of her life experiences I still felt like I could empathize with her and I really cared about her succeeding throughout the book. I love a good YA mystery and can see this being put in the same category as One of Us is Lying and The Firekeeper's Daughter. I also greatly appreciated the way this ending, because it wasn't super corny and unrealistic, but was also very satisfying, which is often a hard balance to strike, especially with YA books. Can't wait to purchase a copy of this when it comes out!

What happens when the girl who can see glimpses of the future goes missing and the only person who can help is an outsider that can gets bits of the past? This book left me guessing every chapter because what you see isn’t always what you get. If you looking for a YA thriller, this one is for you!

I had this book for a book tour and found it really interesting. The story kept me engaged and reading.

In this high stakes YA thriller, a teen girl who sees visions of the past must use her gift to help save a kidnapped classmate! The pair, Hayden + Cassie, don’t start as friends but eventually they come into each other’s lives due to twisted visions and the race to save the day.

This book was pretty interesting, the plot moving quickly enough as the reader tries to piece together each clue on how to find the kidnapped girl. The one thing that fell through for me was the characters itself. I felt as if they weren’t fleshed out enough but I suppose pretty relatable for the high school audience. There were also a bit of cliche moments but what do you expect from a ya book haha.

If you are in The mood for a light thriller with a supernatural feel, this one is for you!!

Thankyou to Netgally + Swoon reads for the advanced readers copy ❤️‍🔥 check out this book when it hits shelves April 12, 2022 :)

Such a fun YA mystery. This book was so well written and well paced, it hooked me immediately and there were no dull moments and quite a bit of surprise! Comparing this to a psychic Veronica Mars is spot on. All in all, a very fun read. I would definitely love to see a sequel.

Love the spin of a supernatural element within a great mystery. Gave the story something different than what is on the shelves today!

What a fantastic mystery! This book had it all; multiple perspectives, an intriguing storyline, romance, friendship and a supernatural element. Cassie and Hayden are characters that you cannot help but root for. When Cassie is taken Hayden gets sucked into her life to try to save her putting her own life in danger. As the puzzle unfolds trust me when I say you won't be able to put the book down!

Is a good book, for a YA, I’ll give it that. The pace was smooth and the mystery, lies and deceptions never fail to win me over. Incredible how the author managed the twist and leaves you question everything! Found the romance storyline a bit unnecessary but then again, is just personal preference.
