I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I hoped. To start with, I could not understand how this group were friends: they are so mean to each other, taking light-hearted banter to another level. It felt like they were constantly drinking, sniping and generally being rude to each other, that I just wanted them to go home and go their separate ways.

It didn’t help that I found the characters too similar. I was repeatedly going back to the start of chapters to remind myself who was the narrator. They are only a group of six but the narrative voices were tricky to distinguish, especially as they gripe so much about the company they are keeping. Portrayed as shallow, self-centred and prone to having a lot of alcohol, I lost respect for the characters, even when things started to become spooky.

Events develop to suggest that the light house is haunted. One of the characters seems a bit obsessed with this topic and appears to find it gratifying to share her findings with the others, deliberately freaking them out. However, it turns out that Genevieve’s research becomes important and she grows to become quite a significant character in the latter half of the book. True, the mysteriously lost items, the locked room and the atmosphere of the cottages/light house in general all create an unsettling atmosphere, especially when combined with the stormy weather. I thought the writer establishes a very claustrophobic environment, particularly when it is clear the annoyed characters can’t really escape each other. Yet, I sadly guessed how the story would conclude and found it frustrating when it took so long to get there.

Whether the characters ever learn from their experiences remains ambiguous by the end of the story. I thought Dorricott could have ended the novel in a more optimistic way, instead reinforcing the deceptive and shallow actions of the characters. Furthermore, it could have been a bit more open-ended, perhaps allowing for a sequel… although I’m not sure I would want to read more about the people in this story.

This book tries to create a locked-room mystery but it did not meet its mark for me. Overwhelmingly, it was the characters that made this book off-putting, but I also thought a bit more tension could have improved the story, especially as I failed to sympathise with any of the character predicaments.

With thanks to Avon books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Great start with a rushed ending and a fair bit of monotomy.

I was worried this would be too creepy for me, but it wasnt!

I found this book to be a bit boring. The characters were annoying. They were so one dimensional.
The pacing was slow and at times it almost stood still.

A creepy thriller set on an abandoned island lighthouse, north of the Scottish Highlands, where a group of friends from university are meeting up for a weekend away.

Tempers fray as things, and people, start to go missing, the .weather takes a turn for the worse, and secrets begin to emerge. But there is no way to contact anyone or to leave the island until the boat returns in a few days to collect them.

This is the perfect spooky book for an autumn read that might keep you up at night. 6 friends are on a trip to a lighthouse on an uninhabited island for a weekend of catching up, socialising and drinking. But then creepy and unexplainable things start to happen that has the group scared for their safety.
The book is told from 3 of the women's perspectives which helps the reader to see different views and what they are all thinking and it adds to the tension when things start to happen. The setting is very lonely and creepy and it is not surprising that it starts to get to them. I loved most of this book but I'm not sure about the ending.

This was a twisty, chilling book with great pacing, that made for a quick and easy read. The plot is well-written and captivating, and there are so many secrets and lies that I changed my mind on the suspect seemingly every page.

Book starts off with a group of friends that spend a weekend together but then one of them goes missing. He comes back but is scared and doesn't want to tell the group where he was and what has happened. Book was really a well written, and thrilling ghost story with a touch of psychological suspense added. Recommended.

That completely blew my mind. I’m fully attached to the characters right until the end. I loved it. Can’t even sum up all the good things about this book in one simple review.

Cheers indeed, Netgalley.

I loved the creepy setting for this book. It kept me guessing throughout the story. I wasn't keen on many of the characters but the twists kept me turning the pages. For me, the ending let the book down but overall an enjoyable read.

Thanks for NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book had me enthralled from the start, however, I felt unsatisfied by the end. It felt unfinished and rushed which was a shame as I was really enjoying it until the last 10%.

I wouldn't be put off reading another by this author as the writing style was great!

Tension builds throughout this wonderful thriller in the spookiest of settings, a remote lighthouse in Scotland which has recently been turned into a luxurious getaway. I found myself being creeped out by the sheer atmosphere building. Clever twists and turns keep you hooked throughout and the onslaught of secrets revealed will have you reading with your jaw-dropped!

The perfect read to cosy up with on an autumn/winters day!

A bunch of long time pals head for a few days away, remote island, stunning lighthouse, beautiful views and the island is theirs alone. They have a history with each other, five of them plus one of the crowds new girlfriends. Small things start happening, item(s) go missing and then one of the group goes missing and more strange things start happening, are the group truly alone or is one of them unhinged?

What a great creepy set up, you have two couples, two singletons, in house jokes and history between the five with the new girlfriend trying not to stand out too much. Two ladies first time away from their child, one of the group is an ex of the other, it has been a while since they were all together. Fun time, joy, jokes, snipping and when things start to go to pot anger, sniping, tears, secrets, accusations - it all kicks off.

Along with all the group drama there is another theme, haunting, ghostly, darkness - suspense and creepiness is weaved throughout. We hear from the characters pov and it changes with the chapters but is well done and flows. The way Dorricott writes you are submerged in the setting which is perfect for the creepy tale and everything that follows, perfect read for a dark night or secluded setting, 4/5.

Deliciously spooky, I found myself wanting to read all night - and then all day, so that I didn't scare myself silly!

Who doesn't like lighthouses? The perfect place to have a weekend getaway with a group of friends you've mostly known all your life. It's the picture of isolation on a small uninhabited island with no phone signal, no boat coming back until you're ready to leave. The weather isn't perfect but who doesn't mind a dramatic storm now and then. So what if little things go missing, one of your group gets drunk and disappears for just long enough that you all get terrified, you thought you saw someone outside the window but that must have been a mistake and that locked room in the lighthouse is probably nothing. Right?

Lots of atmosphere and tension building which works really well. For me I think it could have done with a couple less characters or perhaps less clear cut definitions of the damaged one, the calm one, the ghost loving one. That sometimes distracted from what was going on.

Absolutely dumbfounded by the writing style. Such a mysterious plot. Though I was disappointed with the ending a bit. I expected a more spooky one. I definitely recommend this books and would love to read more books from this author.

A group of university friends all meet up at a remote island at a lighthouse but when strange things start to happen who is behind it?
This was a good read - you learn about things that have happened in the past and why the characters are like they are. I also liked the different perspectives of the characters this added a lot to the twistiness of the story. Once the weird things started to happen it did give the book a real creepy feel. I do have to say the ending felt a little rushed and there could have been more to it in my opinion but it was still a good read.
