A true crime writer works on her latest book in an isolated farmhouse while a storm rages outside. She's all alone until she discovers a young child alone in the snow. There are three stories unfolding here and, because Wylie never once says or thinks anything about the book she's writing you just have to guess that at least one of the other two must be connected to her work.

I didn't care for this one. One of the big plot twists was only a twist because the author deliberately misled the reader. Wylie never felt like a capable protagonist and I was constantly questioning her decisions. Once or twice, I almost found myself holding my breath and wondering what was going to happen....but it was never enough to get me fully caught up in the plot.

For me Heather Gudenkauf is synonymous with intense physiological mysteries that keep me guessing. Such was the case with The Overnight Guest, which releases 1-25-22. This book gave off vibes that made me glad when insomnia hit I wasn't home alone - a snow storm would have really freaked me right out.

The Overnight Guest is a wonderful mystery that kept me guessing until things finally clicked into place. I expected a layered story from a number of POVs and through different time periods. That's exactly what I got.

Atmospheric with flawed and mysterious characters that drew at my heartstrings. Fast paced/slow paced I was anxious to unravel the mystery myself, some parts I was able to but not all of them. That's what I love about reading a Gudenkauf book, keeps me on my toes.

Thank you to Park Row books for a digital advanced copy in exchange for a honest review.

What elements make a great story, a sudden snowstorm, no electricity, a found child. All of these come together to uncover a crime that occurred 20 years earlier.

The Overnight Guest Review!

Thank you, Netgalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ebook in return for a honest review! The Overnight Guest comes out January 25, 2022!!

I’m always down for a blizzardy thriller, especially with winter coming! The Overnight Guest was a 5/5⭐️ for me! This one was amazing!! It reminded me a lot of No Exit. There was a lot of suspense and a kidnapper on the prowl! The first quarter of it was a little confusing. There were 3 different stories switching back to back it seemed, but it all fell together nicely about halfway through! I definitely recommend this one for the upcoming winter!!

Synopsis: A true crime writer decided to get away to a very secluded home to finish her book. When a huge winter storm comes in she feels safe and cozy with the house’s dog and fireplace. That is until there is an unexpected guest who shows up.

This is one of my favorite types of thrillers. Multiple storylines and leaving it up to you, the reader/amateur armchair detective, to connect all the dots and just maybe figure out how it will all come together. Who’s up for the challenge?💁🏻‍♀️

Wylie is a true-crime author. She presently rents a secluded home in the middle of nowhere to finish her latest book. Who could have predicted she’d find herself in the middle of a massive blizzard, leaving her cut off from everyone?

Josie is an average twelve-year-old girl who’s having her best friend Beckie sleep-over. Unfortunately, and sadly, there’s a great deal of tension in Josie’s home between the parents and the brother. This may not turn out to be the carefree, fun-filled night they were hoping for.

There is one more crucial storyline threaded into this book. But what kind of a friend would I be if I spilled the beans?! You’ll just have to let it unfold as you read along. No spoilers here!.🤫

Some of the twists I saw coming, and others totally surprised me. To me, that’s a great combo. When I finished, I actually went back to skim a few parts to see how I missed some of the shockers. And yup!🙋🏻‍♀️. The trail was right there, hidden in plain sight. I just missed it. Might be losing my touch! Lol!

Heather Gudenkauf writes a superb, captivating😉 thriller that just might keep you guessing throughout!

I flew through this book in only a few sittings. It was supposed to be a buddy read but sadly I left Susanne far behind as I just couldn’t put it down. (Sorry Susanne)💕

I’ve always enjoyed this author’s works in the past and am looking forward to her next.

A pseudo-buddy read with Susanne🤣💞

This was a really fun, extremely bingeable thriller. True crime writer Wylie Clark is staying in a remote farmhouse and finishing her book about the murders that occurred in the house twenty years ago. Then there’s a blizzard, and she finds a kid in the snow, and a ton of crazy stuff happens.

I really loved the use of multiple characters’ perspectives and the back and forth timeline between the murders and the present day. So. Much. Tension. I didn’t love-love the ending, but this was overall a great read, and I will happily read anything this author writes!

I have read every book by this author and have not yet been disappointed. This book was no exception. I was rooting for the protagonist Wylie throughout the entire book. The way that the author was able to ravel three stories together, from past, and two from the present, the way that she did made for an amazing novel. I finished this in a day and a half because I had to know what was going to happen. The setting of this story in a small town in Iowa was the perfect setting as were all the characters. I did not who the murderer was until the moment that the author wanted me to. This was a five star read for me and one I will definitely be recommending to others.

I've been waiting foreeeevvvvveeerrrr for another Heather Gudenkauf book and boy did she deliver!

Wylie Lark needs to finish her book so she packs up her stuff and heads to a deserted cabin. She wasn't quite prepared to get stuck in a snowstorm, but she can handle it....until she finds a child in the snow. If she leaves the child, they will freeze to death. But where did they come from? Who are they with?

This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time (which, granted, wasn't long because I flew through this one and finished in a day!) I was even surprised by the twists and turns it took.

Fantastic book from a fantastic author. Highly recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and Heather Gudenkauf for the advanced copy of The Overnight Guest in exchange for my honest review!

Wylie Lark is staying at a remote farmhouse while she writes her newest true crime novel. The farmhouse is just shy of perfect, thanks to the grizzly murders and child abduction that took place there decades earlier. With a snowstorm bearing down, Wylie is trapped in the house, with only its haunting past to keep her company.

When she discovers a small child in the snow, she brings them inside to tend to their injuries. In her hunt to discover who the child is and where they came from, she realizes she may not be as isolated as she once thought.

I was truly blown away by this one. I loved how it was written, the pacing, the twists, ev-er-y-thing! So good. I like to ultimately rate mysteries and thrillers by how much they are able to bamboozle me with their endings, and this one I did *not* see coming one bit. Consider me thoroughly bamboozled.

The Overnight Guest will be on bookshelves near you January 25, 2022!

Heather Gudenkauf is a must-buy author for me. I’m never disappointed with her writing. The Overnight Guest was another great mystery/thriller! She had me guessing the whole book.

The Overnight Guest was a solid mystery that is broken into 3 points of view - one years ago when an horrific crime happens, one a young girl and her mother living locked in a basement - captive to the whims of a violent man, and one of present day set during a terrible winter storm.

It took a bit to get into the different narratives, but the past and present stories really held my interest. The one about the mother and daughter in the basement was rather violent with heavy hints that miscarriages/early births were brought on by the violent man providing milkshakes to the pregnant woman. Normally violence doesn't throw me as I'm a true crime addict, but I felt this was a bit excessive.

The whodunit part of the story is well done, providing a few different suspects and solid reasons why they were suspected.

I really enjoyed The Overnight Guest once I settled into the three points of view/timelines. This book definitely leaves you wanting more and faster so that you can figure out what happened. I'd definitely recommend this to mystery and crime readers.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and publisher for an ARC at my request. All thoughts are my own.

A mystery suspense that will keep you guessing till the very end!

This is how you do it, my friends!

A dark, chilling, atmospheric read that included a myriad of characters and multiple timelines/storylines all of which kept this girl highly intrigued.

Admittedly, at first, my head was spinning trying to keep track of all that was going on. Luckily the storyline was gripping enough to keep me glued to the edge of my seat.

First, in August of 2000, we have best friends Josie and Becky, whose lives change forever on one evening in late summer.

In the present day, we have Wylie, a true-crime writer, who arrives in Burden, Iowa to finish drafting a book about events that took place years earlier. Trapped during an insane snowstorm, she comes across an injured boy in the snow and tries to save him. Who is he and where did he come from?

That my friends is another question and another storyline.

Everything that could go wrong does, of course. Between the blizzard, the lack of electricity and the internet, and of course, the fact that a murderer is on the loose, no one is safe. The tension is high and the chill in the air is palpable.

Heather Gudenkauf has been a long-time favorite writer of mine for years now and I can safely say that with The Overnight Guest, she has once again delivered.

A buddy read with Kaceey that we both enjoyed. I was a bit of a slowpoke reading this one due to having family over during the entire Thanksgiving Holiday but thankfully still got to discuss this one was Kaceey thereafter. As always, I am forever thankful to my bestie Kaceey for always being by my side.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing Park Row for the arc.

A digital copy of this book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book has dual timelines 2000 and NOW. In 2000, 13-year-old Becky was spending the night at her best friend Josie's house, when Josie's family was brutally murdered. Josie escaped but Becky disappeared. Now true crime author Wylie Lark comes to the scene of the crime to finish writing the story, but a snow storm cuts off all communication to the outside world. Wylie stumbles upon a child in the snow and goes in search of the child's relatives, thinking there was an accident. There are quite a few characters in this story in the beginning that made me wonder what was going on; however, it all comes together nicely. Thank you NetGalley, Harlequin Books, Park Row Books and Heather Gudenkauf.

OMG! This was amazing!!
I read this in two hours and bit all my nails down to the quick. It was the best thriller I have read this year. Gudenkauf managed to keep the sense of horror and anticipation straight through the prose. The best bits were with Wylie and the isolation of the house and the storm. I loved this and will be straight down to my independent bookstore to buy the rest of her books. I don't think I can read them back to back though! Too much tension. Maybe a nice, easy romance in between!
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is my honest review.

Thank you to the publisher for a free netgalley.

Definitely enjoyed this one. This book is told in three different timelines. The switching is a little annoying at times, but overall it worked for the story.

I enjoyed how this one wrapped up and felt vested in knowing the final verdict. I had most of it figured out early except for one aspect. I still felt myself turning the pages quickly as the story went on.

Would recommend!

I have been reading so many fantastic thrillers that I don’t think I’ll ever move on to Christmas reads!

I’ve only read two of HG’s books before this one, but both were absolutely awesome and lead me to purchase several of her older ones. I requested “The Overnight Guest” on NG as soon as I saw its beautiful cover! Then, Harlequin Trade Publishing auto approved me, which meant I was approved for this one and I did a little happy dance and squeal! Only my dog was around, so it wasn’t too embarrassing!

My wonderful husband bought me a kindle for my birthday, and this was the first book I read on it. What are the odds that my #firstkindleread would be a #fivestarread!

This gripping and intriguing thriller grabbed me from the beginning and never let up! There were several timelines and it me took a bit to get my head wrapped around that. I’ve been listening to a lot of audiobooks, but I think this book was perfect as an actual read.

Josie and Becky are best friends and Becky is spending the night at Josie’s house. Neither knows that this will be their last sleepover and life will never be the same. I loved every shock, twist, chill, and thrill. This one can’t be missed!

Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing / Park Row for this digital ARC. This review is my honest opinion.
