Wow. Let me say that again…WOW. John Michaels first book written as an author and he has created, written and delivered to the readers lucky enough to read this story, a masterpiece. Truly, this was one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time.
This one grabbed me by the throat from the second I opened it and here I am still thinking about it hours after finishing. What I found so incredible about this one was Michael’s way of juggling all of the characters… and let me tell you, there are a freaking TON of them!
This story was written in such a unique and interesting way. There’s not a lot of books I’ve read that jump back and forth between characters and describe them all with such skill and detail – but that’s exactly what Michaels did. It was so cool to not only read and learn about the main characters development and their lives… but ALSO the backup characters and their stories as well.
Michaels kept me guessing how all these seemingly unconnected characters and mini stories overlapped, wove and connected to each other. I didn't really get a firm grip on all the players and their parts in what was happening until just a few chapters to the end. I have a feeling that's exactly how Michaels intended it to be.
Every time I thought I had a grip on what was happening, nope – there was a total left field pivot and a new chapter took me away from what I had my finger on and hurled me into someone and someplace else. This book took me all over the place – lots of plane rides and traveling from here to there to anywhere and back which was awesome. The journey was truly amazing. It’s the quintessential definition of a THRILLER in the most basic and yet complicated way. I could totally see this book being turned into a movie AS IS without Hollywood needing to sensationalize it to death. It doesn’t need anything, it’s perfect just as it is.
Possibly the only thing I didn’t really get in this entire story was the name the killer chose. It was odd and to me, didn’t make a whole lot of sense; there was a short explanation in the book that said it’s not difficult to make the connection between the killer’s real first name and the one chosen. I still didn’t really get it. I think it would’ve made more sense to pick something closer to the deceased family members that started the entire thing, but that’s just me.
I truly hope Michael’s keeps writing – he has found his real calling in life. He is without a doubt, one hell of a good writer. I don’t often read standalone novels, I much prefer to read serials, but I’m glad I read this one. I would definitely read more by this author and recommend it to anyone who wants a little heart thumping roller coaster ride action. What are you waiting for? 😊 Thanks to NetGalley and John Michaels for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book for free!
