The Solomon Says Devotional: 100 Days of Wisdom from the World’s Wisest King by Amy Parker is one of the best kids devotionals I have read in 2021. The Solomon Says Devotional is geared towards 8-12 year olds and is a study in the book of Proverbs. Each devotion has with it a prayer and an activity to go along with the reading. I loved how the author really makes the reader really think about the Proverbs and how each activity really corresponds well with it’s particular devotion. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. (My review is also on Goodreads.)

Solomon Says Devotional

100 Days of Wisdom from the World's Wisest King

Back of the Book: “Solomon was the wisest man in the world, but can the words of an ancient king really connect with you today? Yes! Solomon’s proverbs are timeless, and he offers surprisingly relevant thoughts on topics such as dealing with peer pressure, building solid friendships, and choosing joy over complaining, even on the tough days.

Solomon Says Devotional offers you God-given wisdom to build a life focused on faith instead of worldly wisdom that seeks getting ahead and getting more. Each practical devotion is based on one of Solomon’s proverbs and includes a short prayer and simple activity, all tools that can change your thinking and grow your integrity. Spend one hundred days listening to what King Solomon has to say, and let these ancient proverbs inspire your life today.”

My Thoughts: This devotional is laid out with a key verse, passage to look up and read, devotional, prayer and put to practice activity that relates to the topic. As a mother of boys, I appreciated the approach of explanation to the “whys” for the reader in the devotional section. Rather than start the devotional by dictating information to the reader, the author asks why this chapter and person of the Bible is important. I think this helped engage the reader to understand and appreciate the text more. I also enjoyed the activities or hands-on application that was provided at the end of each reading. It’s important to see and understand how we can use God's word in our lives regularly. There was a lot to like about this devotional in my opinion. My son (10 years old) does not enjoy reading and is not at the point where he wants to sit down and read outside of school, so he did not appreciate reading this book. It was however an appropriate reading level for him. It provided an opening for conversation which is always a win to me.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review shared here.

Did you know that many years ago, there was a man who was raking in about a billion dollars a year? Apart from being the most wealthy person at that time, he was also the wisest man on earth. He was also a man richly blessed by the LORD God. This man is none other than King Solomon of Israel. These historical facts would not only thrill the minds of young children, they open the little hearts to the many proverbs in the Bible. One might ask how an ancient document of deep concepts and spiritual truths be easily understood by little minds? Well, the truth is often hampered by difficult language. As long as we can translate or transmit these truths in a way that children understand, they will learn the deep biblical truths. Proverbs 1:4 includes this declaration: "for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young." In a nutshell, these proverbs are meant for all ages, and if that is so, we should do our part to impart these truths to those who are young. In this devotional written in a way for young children to comprehend, there are 100 devotionals that comprise a Proverb, a brief description, a prayer, and a page for writing down one's thoughts and feelings. There are also pointers to pre-address any concerns kids might have. On the activity page, children are encouraged to write a song, pen a poem, work on a suggested activity, or simply draw a picture of what they have heard or learned.

There are selections from all 31 chapters from Proverbs in the Old Testament, explained in a simple manner so that young children can easily understand. Change a heart and change the world. That's the central motif in the book of wisdom. The pages contain many simple lessons about biblical truths such as "fear of the Lord," "voice of God," "serving God," "Grace," and other invitations to learning what wisdom is. Each day is like a mini-Sunday School lesson that contains a brief lesson; a response time; concluding with an activity page. There is also a simple prayer for parents, guardians, or teachers to pray along with young kids. It would be a delightful addition to any Church Sunday School curriculum.

Sarah Humphrey is a wife and homeschool mom to three kids while also working as an artist, author, and voice actor. Her writing and doodling can be found in her devotional, 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood, and her voice in several commercials, children’s books, and audiobooks. She loves encouraging women and kids to embrace self-care, utilize their gifts, and become leaders in the community around them.

Amy Parker has written more than seventy books for children, teens, and adults, with over 2 million copies sold. She has collaborated with authors ranging from New York Times bestsellers to her very own son. Two of these collaborations—Firebird and Courageous Teens—are recipients of Christian Retailing’s Best Awards. But Amy’s greatest reward is being a wife to Daniel and a mom to their amazing sons, Michael and Ethan.

Rating: 4 stars of 5.
